From the time of Aristotle until the late 18th century, meteorology meant the study of "meteors" - spectacular objects in the skies beneath the moon, which included everything from shooting stars to hailstorms. In "Reading the Skies", Vladimir Jankovic traces the history of this meteorological tradition in Enlightenment Britain, examining its scientific and cultural significance. He interweaves classical traditions, folk/popular beliefs and practices, and the increasingly quantitative approaches of urban university men to understanding the wonders of the skies. He places special emphasis on the role that detailed meteorological observations played in natural history and chorography, or local geography; in religious and political debates; and in agriculture. Drawing on a number of archival sources, including correspondence and weather diaries, as well as contemporary pamphlets, tracts, and other printed sources reporting prodigious phenomena in the skies, this book should interest historians of science, Britain, and the environment.

Soviet Climate Change Science explores the character and range of Soviet contributions to the emerging understanding of large-scale anthropogenic climate change during the post-1945 period. More specifically, it examines the role of Soviet scientists in helping to shape the debate, both domestically and on the international stage, and with a particular focus on the period 1960s to the 1980s.The book details the institutional underpinnings of Soviet activity in this area, the main scientific debates evident within key centres of climate-related science and the activities of Soviet scientists with respect to a range of international collaborations such as the 1972 US-USSR Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection, the early work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Greenhouse Glasnost initiative, which included the world’s first teleconference on climate change. It concludes with a reflection on the extent to which Soviet scientific legacies continued to shape Russian approaches to climate change post-1991.This book will be of interest to those working on the historical and sociocultural aspects of climate change, providing the first detailed assessment of Soviet involvement in this critical area of scientific activity.

"The IMO Compendium" is the ultimate collection of challenging high-school-level mathematics problems and is an invaluable resource not only for high-school students preparing for mathematics competitions, but for anyone who loves and appreciates mathematics. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), nearing its 50th anniversary, has become the most popular and prestigious competition for high-school students interested in mathematics. Only six students from each participating country are given the honor of participating in this competition every year. The IMO represents not only a great opportunity to tackle interesting and challenging mathematics problems, it also offers a way for high school students to measure up with students from the rest of the world.Until the first edition of this book appearing in 2006, it has been almost impossible to obtain a complete collection of the problems proposed at the IMO in book form. "The IMO Compendium" is the result of a collaboration between four former IMO participants from Yugoslavia, now Serbia and Montenegro, to rescue these problems from old and scattered manuscripts, and produce the ultimate source of IMO practice problems. This book attempts to gather all the problems and solutions appearing on the IMO through 2009. This second edition contains 143 new problems, picking up where the 1959-2004 edition has left off.
