This volume presents applications of group analysis of differential equations to various models used in hydrodynamics. It contains many examples of exact solutions to the boundary value problems for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. These solutions describe vortex structures in an inviscid fluid, Marangoni boundary layers, thermal gravity convection and other interesting effects. Moreover, the book provides a method for finding solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations, which is illustrated by a number of examples, including equations for flows of a compressible ideal fluid in two and three dimensions. The work is reasonably self-contained and supplemented by examples of direct physical importance.

On November 3, 2005, Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov left this world, untimely and unexpectedly. He was one of the most in?uential mathematicians in the mechanics of ?uids, and will be remembered for his outstanding results that had, and still have, a c- siderablysigni?cantin?uenceinthe?eld.Amonghis manyachievements,werecall that he was the founder of the modern mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations describing one- and two-dimensional motions of a viscous, compressible and heat-conducting gas. A brief account of Professor Kazhikhov’s contributions to science is provided in the following article “Scienti?c portrait of Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov”. This volume is meant to be an expression of high regard to his memory, from most of his friends and his colleagues. In particular, it collects a selection of papers that represent the latest progress in a number of new important directions of Mathematical Physics, mainly of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. These papers are written by world renowned specialists. Most of them were friends, students or colleagues of Professor Kazhikhov, who either worked with him directly, or met him many times in o?cial scienti?c meetings, where they had the opportunity of discussing problems of common interest.

It was long ago that group analysis of differential equations became a powerful tool for studying nonlinear equations and boundary value problems. This analysis was especially fruitful in application to the basic equations of mechanics and physics because the invariance principles are already involved in their derivation. It is in no way a coincidence that the equations of hydrodynamics served as the first object for applying the new ideas and methods of group analysis which were developed by 1. V. Ovsyannikov and his school. The authors rank themselves as disciples of the school. The present monograph deals mainly with group-theoretic classification of the equations of hydrodynamics in the presence of planar and rotational symmetry and also with construction of exact solutions and their physical interpretation. It is worth noting that the concept of exact solution to a differential equation is not defined rigorously; different authors understand it in different ways. The concept of exact solution expands along with the progress of mathematics (solu­ tions in elementary functions, in quadratures, and in special functions; solutions in the form of convergent series with effectively computable terms; solutions whose searching reduces to integrating ordinary differential equations; etc. ). We consider it justifiable to enrich the set of exact solutions with rank one and rank two in­ variant and partially invariant solutions to the equations of hydrodynamics.
