Auf fahrende Züge aufzuspringen, zählt nicht zu den charaktervollsten Formen der Fortbewegung. Und dennoch gibt es Angebote, die man nicht ausschlagen kann, weil sie einfach zu verlockend sind. Die Nachfolge von Felix Harder bei diesem Standardwerk anzutreten, war gleichermaßen ehrenvoll und verpflichtend. Standards, die Felix Harder zusammen mit den beiden anderen Herausgebern gesetzt hatte, galt es zu halten, Gutes sollte bewahrt, Bewährtes gegebenenfalls verbessert werden. Ergänzungen waren gewünscht (so die komplette Hernienchirurgie), aber der Umfang des Bandes durfte nicht - nehmen, wohl aber die Qualität eines ohnehin schon sehr guten Werkes. Diese Aufgabe war verlockend, aber eigentlich kaum lösbar, und nun liegt der fertige Band vor uns. Dass dies möglich war, verdanke ich vor allem den bisherigen Autoren, die ohne Murren ihre Beiträge großzügig auf das Essenzielle gekürzt und auf den aktuellen Kenntnisstand ausgerichtet haben. Aber auch allen neuen Autoren ist zu danken, dass sie sich in dieses Konzept eingebunden und uns mit ihren Ausführungen bereichert haben. Insbesondere danke ich meinen Mitarbeitern und hier vor allem in erster Linie Herrn Kollegen Priv. -Doz. Dr. Marc Jansen für die straffe Hand bei der Realisation in de- bar kurzer Zeit. Ohne das jetzige und frühere Aachener Team wäre diese Aufgabe nicht zu lösen ge- sen, hierfür danke ich allen Beteiligten. To define them, to evaluate the absolute and relative risk of these sequelaes and to describe the ways of their prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the 5th Suvretta meeting had focussed on this subject. We discussed if there’s a principle risk by technique, material or both. The results of these discussions and the future handling and evaluation of this problem was the aim of this meeting. The 3rd Suvretta meeting in January 2003 was intended to give an overview of the of meshes in hernia operations. After the first meeting in 1995 on Ingui current use nal Hernia and the second on Incisional Hernia in 1998, the current congress was focused on the benefits and risks of hernia meshes, the reason being that meshes have more and more become the standard in open as well as in laparoscopic hernia operations. During the past 10 years new indications for the use of mesh as well as new types of mesh have been developed. Considerable experience with meshes has been published in the literature, including controlled trials of different results, dif ferent techniques, and last but not least, case reports of complications. We there fore felt it was timely and appropriate to hold a state-of-the-art meeting on meshes used in hernia curative procedures. During 3 intense working days which included presentations, demonstrations, and extensive discussions, the current role and the future potential development of artificial mesh implants were discussed by both traditional and laparoscopic sur geons. The most renowned hernia specialists of the world came together to discuss the use of meshes relating to construction, material, technique, experimental stu dies and clinical results. Each participant was invited to give a special talk on his favorite subject for discussion among the attending specialists.
