The National Book League was a precursor to the current Booktrust, and was set up in 1924 by the Society of Bookmen in order to promote reading, particularly among the young. To that end, the NBL issued Reader's Guides on a variety of subjects, each written by an author with expertise in that field and containing an annotated bibliography of recommended titles on the subject. In this guide, first published in 1958, W. B. Stevenson divides his bibliography of recommended mystery titles into 'The Old Masters' and 'The Moderns', with an extra section for books about detective fiction. Some of the books recommended remain classics of the genre.

First published in 1907, this book provides a history of the political relations between the states founded by Crusaders and the Islamic states with which they waged war. In the treatment of this subject the Eastern point of view is emphasized and the main thread of narrative is drawn, as far as possible, from the history of Islamic states. Additional material includes appendices relating to chronology, a list of principal works referred to in the notes, an index, and maps. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history and historiography of the Crusades.

In 1804 when W. B. Stevenson (fl. 1803-25) arrived on the small island of Mocha, just off the coast of South America, he stepped onto a continent on the brink of mass revolution. Over the next twenty years, he had an extraordinary range of experiences: as a traveller, a Spanish government official, a prisoner, and as secretary to an ex-Royal Navy admiral turned revolutionary. In this three-volume work, published in 1825, Stevenson gives a dramatic, fascinating account of the life and culture of South America as it began to break free from Spanish colonial rule. Volume 1 focuses on Stevenson's arrival in 1804, his initial impressions, and travels in Chile, Colombia and Peru. It describes food and drink, society and culture, administration and climate. It also covers his imprisonment in Lima by the Spanish authorities.
