Advances in Vocational Psychology devoted to presenting and evaluating important advances in the field of interest measurement. Progress in three well known interest inventories -- the Strong Campbell Interest Inventory, the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey, and the Self Directed Search -- is closely examined. A focus on innovations in interest measurement directs attention to how more recent instruments provide technical and conceptual advances over older, more reliable ones. Both research and counseling perspectives combine to provide a well-balanced guide to the study of vocational psychology. How interest inventories can be used beneficially in the career counseling of minority and majority populations is also explored.

Unlike academic journals, the contributions to the Biennial Review do not represent spontaneous submissions, but carefully planned and written chapters pursued and researched by the editorial committee. Topics covered include adult psychotherapy, multicultural counseling, college counseling and mental-health services, and psychosocial issues and treatment techniques with recent immigrants. A perfect source for those interested in continuing education, this first volume of the Biennial Review is a significant contribution to the literature and an indicator of the potential of future volumes.

This book is the first edited volume devoted exclusively to career counseling with African Americans. African Americans are now at parity with the graduation rates of White Americans, yet disparities in employment continue to abound. At the same time the job market is changing and in need of more highly qualified workers, society must begin to understand the career and employment needs of Black Americans if it is to more effectively utilize this available market resource. Recent data indicates that stronger economies have a competitive edge if they have a more diverse workforce. More effective career counseling must be provided for African Americans so that they can become more thoroughly integrated in the world of work, thus creating stronger economies for society and more satisfying and challenging lives for this segment of the United States. Career Counselors need to be trained to effectively interact with African Americans. This volume begins to shed more light on just how to do that. This book presents nine significant topics focusing on career counseling for African Americans: *basic issues and concepts; *career assessment; *career counseling with African Americans; *career counseling with dual career African American couples; *career transition issues; *affirmative career counseling with African American women; *career counseling in non-traditional career fields; *the impact of the glass ceiling on the career development of African Americans; and *future directions in career counseling theory, research, and practice with African Americans.

A variety of theoretical approaches to person-environment psychology has been developed over the years, representing a rich range of intellectual perspectives. This second edition links the past and present and looks toward the future in reviewing new directions and perspectives in person-environment psychology. Stated differently, the main thrust of this volume is to present contemporary models and perspectives that make some sensible predictions concerning the individual and the environment using the person-environment relationship. Within a person-environment framework, these models and perspectives are concerned with how people tend to influence environments and how environments reciprocally tend to influence people. Thus, this second edition presents new directions in person-environment psychology and the implications for theory, research, and application.
