Dieses Manual ist ein Leitfaden für die Praxis, der klar und einfach geschrieben ist. Er ist auch für Leser verständlich, die an den ma­ thematischen Grundlagen der Tonographie nicht interessiert sind. Wenn eine geschickte Sprechstundenhilfe dieses Büchlein gelesen hat, kann sie das Tonographiegerät bedienen. Die Bewertung eines tonographischen Befundes ist natürlich stets Sache des Facharztes. Eine Tonographiekurve kann nur im Rahmen aller sonstigen Befunde etwas aussagen. Deshalb gehe ich nach Schilderung der Technik auch auf Fehlerquellen, Grundlagen, Mo­ difikationen, Grenzen der Methode und auf die Bewertung tonogra­ phischer Kurven ein, wobei diese Abschnitte sich an den Arzt und nicht an seine Mitarbeiterin richten. Das Prinzip der Tonographie und ihre Anwendung sind einfach. Leider haben. die etwas komplizierten theoretischen Grundlagen und die Schwierigkeiten bei der Bedienung der bisher erhältlichen Tonographiegeräte viele Kollegen in der Praxis davon abgehalten, sich dieser nützlichen Methode zu bedienen. Erläuterungen der theoretischen Grundlagen erschienen mir zwar nötig, weil die klini­ schen Grenzen der Tonographie erst hierdurch verständlich werden.

The International Council of Ophthalmology agreed to the creation of an International Glaucoma Committee, which should have a limited number of members, 40 at a maximum. This committee will hold a closed meeting every 4 years on the occasion of the International Congress of Ophthalmology and will report to the International Council on the practical and clinical advances in glaucoma detection and treatment. This report will be published in the proceedings of the International Congress. The committee will advise and direct the activities of the International Glaucoma Society, which will hold a glaucoma symposion prior to each International Congress of Oph­ thalmology and which will be open to anyone interested in glaucoma. This is now the first meeting of the committee. W hen I look at the program and the names of the speakers, I am convinced that it will be very fruitful. This is my most sincere wish. I should like to thank very warmly Prof. Leydhecker for preparing the organization of this group and the scientific program and Prof. Mishima, Prof. Kitazawa, and all of their staff for having so beautifully organized this symposion, which will be very successful, and for having received us with such generous hospitality. I am very grateful to each of the members of the International Glaucoma Committee and to each of our Japanese friends involved in this symposion.

The second Committee Meeting of the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology was held in Carmel Valley ICalifornia from October 22-27, 1982. Traditionally this meeting was closed and preceded the International Congress of Ophthalmology in San Francisco. A group of roughly 80 experts on glaucoma - active members of the committee and invited guests - exchanged latest scientific experiences on the progress in pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the glaucomas. The aim ofthe meeting was to provide quite informal presentations grouped around main topics and ample, lively discussions. The scientific and local organization was in the hands of Jack Hetherington Jr.lSan Francisco and Stephen M. Drance/Vancouver. It is the sincere wish of the society to express warmest thanks to Valerie Hetherington who took in a most charming and efficient way much of the burden of the local organization. The idea of pre-circulation of all scientific presentations 2-3 months before the meeting to all participants and guests proved to be effective with respect to fruitful and stimulating discussions at the site of the meeting. We thank all participants for their co-operation in sending their manuscripts in time. The society is indebted to Chibret Int. Pharmaceutical Company for generous support of this publication.

Dies Buch ist ein Leitfaden für den Augenarzt, der in eigener Praxis tätig ist und eine kurze Information über praktische Probleme der Diagnose und Therapie des Glaukoms wünscht. Es beschränkt sich auf Methoden, die sich nach meiner Erfahrung bewährten. Auch manchem Patienten, der mehr Information haben will, als ein kurzes Gespräch mit dem Arzt geben kann, mag das Buch zum Verstehen seiner Krankheit und zu einem dementsprechend vernünftigen Ver­ halten helfen. Das Schrifttum ist im Text nicht besprochen. Wer mehr als eine praktische Anleitung wünscht, sei auf die 2. Auflage meines Handbuches des Glaukoms (1973) verwiesen, in dem das Schrifttum ausführlich dargestellt ist und auch auf wissenschaftliche Fragen ein­ gegangen wird, die nicht praxisbezogen sind. Die Abbildungen sind fast alle diesem Handbuch entnommen. Die 1. Auflage dieses Leitfadens ist vergriffen. Sie erschien 1962 und wurde ins Englische (Churchill, London 1966) und ins Spanische übersetzt (2. spanische Auflage: Ediciones Toray, Barcelona 1971). Die vorliegende zweite Auflage wurde völlig neu geschrieben. Am Schluß des Buches sind einige Tabellen, die man für den Tonographietest benötigt, sowie eine Anleitung für die Gonioskopie angehängt. Diese Seiten sind perforiert und können herausgetrennt werden, falls man sie getrennt von diesem Buch verwenden will. Sie sind außerdem an der dem Text entsprechenden Stelle vorhanden. - Bei Medikamenten wurden im Text die Freinamen der WHO genannt und in ( ) die Handels­ namen hinzugefügt. Dabei sind auch solche aufgezählt, die nur im Ausland üblich sind, damit der deutsche Augenarzt auch bei aus­ ländischen Patienten die bisherige Therapie versteht.

The European Glaucoma Society was founded in the spring of 1978 at the initiative of Drs Fran~ois, Leydhecker and Greve. Representatives of most European countries met in Ghent and agreed to create a society that would promote the contacts and exchange of knowledge between European glauco­ matologists. The European Glaucoma Society serves to stimulate glaucoma research and diffuse specific knowledge to general ophthalmologists. The European Glaucoma Society would like to cooperate closely with similar glaucoma organizations in other continents. The first symposium of the EGS was held in April 1980 in Brighton, England. No proceedings were published. The second symposium took place in May 1984 in Hyvinkiiii, Finland. A great number of participants enjoyed a well organized scientific programme of attractive quality. The local organization was in the able hands of Raitta and her colleagues, Raivio and Lehto. The scientific programme was coordinated in Amsterdam where a great amount of work was done by Stella Ompi, secretary to the general secretary. The contents of the meeting have been summarized in this book. This second symposium of the EGS, which took place in an atmosphere of great enthusiasm and friendship, has shown great promise for the future of the European glaucoma.
