Die Max Weber-Studienausgabe (MWS) will die Schriften und Reden Max Webers auf der gesicherten Textgrundlage der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe (MWG) allgemein zugänglich machen, unter Verzicht auf den editorischen Apparat. Doch ist sie so angelegt, daß dem Benutzer der Rückgriff auf die MWG jederzeit möglich ist. Deshalb folgt die Studienausgabe in Textkonstitution und Anordnung der Texte durchgängig der MWG. Um dem Leser darüber hinaus das Aufsuchen von Fundstellen zu erleichtern, sind am Fuß jeder Seite die entsprechenden Seitenzahlen der MWG angegeben. Außerdem wird auf die gängigen Ausgaben verwiesen, die bisher in der Sekundärliteratur gebräuchlich sind. In dem posthum publizierten Text Die Stadt hat Weber eine vorläufige Synthese seiner Studien erarbeitet. Der Text legt eine universalhistorisch anwendbare Typologie von Städten vor und konzentriert sich dann auf das Thema der 'Stadt im Rechtssinn', der Stadtgemeinde. Die Stadtgemeinde ist die sich selbst verwaltende Bürgerschaft, wie sie nur in der okzidentalen, nicht jedoch in der orientalischen Stadt vorkomme. Für den Okzident stehen europäisches Mittelalter (mit den unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Stadtgemeinde in Italien, Deutschland und anderen Ländern nördlich der Alpen sowie in England) und griechisch-römische Antike, für den Orient vor allem Indien und China; aber auch die Spezifika der Städte des Alten Orients, des alten Israels, des Islams und Rußlands werden erörtert.
