Scientific computing is the study of how to use computers effectively to solve problems that arise from the mathematical modeling of phenomena in science and engineering. It is based on mathematics, numerical and symbolic/algebraic computations and visualization. This book serves as an introduction to both the theory and practice of scientific computing, with each chapter presenting the basic algorithms that serve as the workhorses of many scientific codes; we explain both the theory behind these algorithms and how they must be implemented in order to work reliably in finite-precision arithmetic. The book includes many programs written in Matlab and Maple – Maple is often used to derive numerical algorithms, whereas Matlab is used to implement them. The theory is developed in such a way that students can learn by themselves as they work through the text. Each chapter contains numerous examples and problems to help readers understand the material “hands-on”.

Accordingly, this textbook is not meant to cover the whole range of this high-performance technical programming environment, but to motivate first- and second-year undergraduate students in mathematics and computer science to learn Matlab by studying representative problems, developing algorithms and programming them in Matlab.

From the reviews: "... An excellent reference on undergraduate mathematical computing." American Mathematical Monthly"... the book is worth buying if you want guidance in applying Maple and MATLAB to problems in the workplace..." Computing Reviews"... The presentation is unique, and extremely interesting. I was thrilled to read this text, and to learn the powerful problem-solving skills presented by these authors. I recommend the text highly, as a learning experience, not only to engineering students, but also to anyone interested in computation." Mathematics of ComputationFor this edition four chapters have been added. Some of the chapters of the previous editions were revised using new possibilities offered by Maple and MATLAB. Some interesting web pages related to Maple and MATLAB have been added in an appendix. Moreover, the editors have created a web page (www.SolvingProblems.inf.ethz.ch), where all Maple and MATLAB programs are available.
