Through his literary, philosophical and contemporary critical works, Albert Camus counts among the greatest French intellectuals of the 20th century. Although Camus still reaches a large number of readers today, there is no extensive institutionalised Camus research at universities. This anthology is published within the temporal context of his 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his death. As a representative of a 20th-century generation, Camus seems to have become a mythological figure, who understood historic and individual catastrophes to be personal challenges and firmly believed that humanitarianism will prevail.The volume is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter brings together treatises on philosophical, ethical and political questions under the heading Commitment; the second, under the heading Aesthetics, his works on narratives and drama; the third, finally, is dedicated to the relation between tradition and modernity and deals with questions of reception and intertextuality.

Der interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Band erfasst die multiplen Facetten von Napoleons Herrschergestalt und leuchtet sie in ihrer Wirkung auf Politik, Geschichte, Literatur, Önologie, Musik und Recht aus. Es sind Schlaglichter auf eine bis heute kontrovers diskutierte historische Persönlichkeit, die die Geschichte der europäischen Einigung am Ende stärker inspiriert hat als zeitweise angenommen und damit auch strukturelle Grundlagen der künftigen Identität Europas geschaffen hat.The 18th of June 2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, which heralded the end of Napoleonic rule. Waterloo not only signified the end, however. In this sense, Thomas Nipperdey''s dictum – "In the beginning was Napoleon" – also underlines the positive effects of Napoleonic rule for Germany and Europe. This interdisciplinary volume covers the multiple facets of the ruler Napoleon and illustrates in what way he influenced politics, history, literature, oenology, music and law. They highlight a historic personality who is still the subject of controversial debate today, but who ultimately inspired the history of European unification more than is sometimes assumed, and created the structural foundations for the future identity of Europe.

Die Gewaltfrage ist eine der großen Fragen der Menschheitsgeschichte. Die Urszene der Gewalt ist die biblische Geschichte von Kain und Abel und dem Brudermord. Der »homo violens« steht im Zentrum der Beiträge dieses Bandes, der den Zusammenhang von Hochkultur und Gewalt behandelt und im Rahmen der Kooperation der Universität Bonn mit dem Collège de France (Ernst-Robert-Curtius-Gastprofessur) entstanden ist. Im ersten Teil widmen sich sieben Beiträge der Theorie und Geschichte der Gewalt in Theologie, Medizin, Politischer Theorie, Philosophie und Geschichte; im zweiten Teil befassen sich sechs Beiträge speziell mit dem Zusammenhang von Literatur und Gewalt im Zeitraum vom 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. Die multidisziplinären Beiträge verstehen sich als Elemente einer Diskursgeschichte der Gewalt.The question of violence is one of the great questions of human history. The primal scene of violence is the biblical story of Cain and Abel and fratricide. This anthology deals with the connection between high culture and violence and was produced as part of the cooperation between the University of Bonn and the Collège de France (Ernst-Robert-Curtius Visiting Professorship). In the first part, seven contributions are devoted to the theory and history of violence in theology, medicine, political theory, philosophy, psychology and history; in the second part, six contributions deal specifically with the connection between literature and violence in the period from the 18th to the 20th century. The multidisciplinary contributions are understood as elements of a discourse history of violence.

Der Rhein als Strom im Herzen Europas fasziniert bis heute die Künste und Wissenschaften. Dieser Band reflektiert einerseits traditionelle Rheinbilder und erweitert andererseits den Blick um neue Perspektiven. Autorinnen und Autoren verschiedener Disziplinen zeigen aus deutsch-französischer Sicht den Fluss als Lebenselixier und Erotikon, aber auch seine todbringende Gewalt, und darüber hinaus die Flusslandschaft als einen Ort der Zuflucht und des Exils sowie die Bedeutung des Rheins und des Rheinlandes als Erinnerungsorte. Dabei wird der französischen und deutschen Rheinliteratur besondere Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Durch die Fokussierung auf die Nahtstelle zwischen den beiden Ländern untersucht der vorliegende Band die deutsch-französischen Beziehungen im Allgemeinen und Aspekte der vielfältigen kulturellen und historischen Beziehungen im Besonderen.The Rhine, a river in the heart of Europe, has always been fascinating for arts and sciences. This volume reflects traditional images of the Rhine and enlarges the view with new perspectives. Authors from various disciplines present the river from a German-French perspective as a source of life and erotic literature but also as a death bringing source of violence and furthermore the river landscape as a place of refuge and exile. Additionally, the authors present the significance of the Rhine and the Rhineland as places of remembrance and concentrate on the German-French Rhine literature. By focusing on the intersection between these two countries the present volume analyses the German-French relationship in general and aspects of the various cultural and historical relations in detail.
