Life is a series of negotiations—from who will make the morning coffee to the landing of a multi-million-dollar contract. Each successful negotiation is a victory, but how is success measured? And after a negotiation is completed, what are the implications for the future? In The Savvy Negotiator, William Morrison addresses these questions in the context of two simple, but profound, ideas: (1) We negotiate to set the ground rules for a future relationship; (2) We negotiate to satisfy our needs. In other words, a negotiation is not simply a transaction, but an opportunity to develop a dynamic relationship; whatever the outcome, there will be future effects. If a negotiation is not designed to provide some benefit to the negotiator, there is no reason to engage. Morrison develops these themes against the backdrop of a general evolution in negotiation theory and practice—from an antagonistic WIN/LOSE approach to the more collaborative WIN/WIN approach. Through dozens of engaging examples, from business and other areas (such as home and car buying), he demonstrates the eight key concepts that underlie any negotiation, and offers many practical strategies for conducting successful and satisfying negotiations in virtually any situation. Along the way, he highlights such timely issues as the role of ethics in negotiation and the impact of the Internet on communication dynamics.

While the Klondike Gold Rush is one of the most widely known events in Canadian history, particularly outside Canada, the rest of the Yukon''s long and diverse history attracts little attention. Important developments such as Herschel Island whaling, pre-1900 fur trading, the post-World War II resource boom, a lengthy struggle for responsible government, and the emergence of Aboriginal political protest remain poorly understood. Placing well-known historical episodes within the broader sweep of the past, Land of the Midnight Sun gives particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place within Confederation. This broader story incorporates the introduction of mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive Elsa-Keno Hill silver mines, the impact of residential schools on Aboriginal children, the devastation caused by the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon''s remarkable contributions to the national World War I effort, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American occupation during World War II. Completely revised with a new epilogue, the bestselling Land of the Midnight Sun was first published in 1988 and became the standard source for understanding the history of the Yukon. Ken Coates and William Morrison have published ten books together, including Strange Things Done: A History of Murder in the Yukon and the forthcoming Trailmarkers: A History of Landmark Aboriginal Rights Cases in Canada. Land of the Midnight Sun was their first collaboration.

The book recounts the events and memories of eight decades of the author's life from the late 1930s - a mere fifteen years after independence - to the current year of the pandemic, 2020.It describes the simple village life of an ordinary middle class family growing up in the suburban village of Blackrock County Dublin. It is as much a social history of the times as a description of a personal childhood. The story of the early working life and subsequent business career reflects the changes the country went through during those same exciting times with Ireland's international growth in diplomacy, politics; commerce, and cultural influence both domestically and internationally. The author is proud of his modest contribution to this aspect of the nation's proud progress in those times. It describes life before computers, when communications were conducted in person; by land line telephones and business letters and the latest manifestation of sophisticated business technology was the electric typewriter. In line with the author s working life the many interesting encounters he had with entertainers and writers are covered in anecdotes about Tony Bennett, Al Martino, Stephane Grappelli, Bill Cosby, Maeve Binchy, Nuala O Faolain, and playwright and film producer Jim Sheridan .From the world of sport there are references to Niall Brophy, a classmate, Paul O Connell through his friendship to Donal Walsh,Eddie Heron the diver and the Kavanagh brothers Paddy, Ronnie, and Gene and finally Muhammud Ali.in Dublin and New York. After reading this wee set of memories, think what the next eighty years may have in store for us all.
