Although astronomical guides were available in the early nineteenth century, they tended to come from continental presses and were rarely in English. This two-volume work by the clergyman and astronomer William Pearson (1767-1847) aimed, with brilliant success, to compile data from extant sources into one of the first English practical guides to astronomy. Most of the tables were updated and improved versions, and some were wholly reconstructed to streamline the calculation processes. Sir John Herschel dubbed it 'one of the most important and extensive works on that subject which has ever issued from the press', and for his efforts Pearson was awarded the gold medal of the Astronomical Society. First published in 1824, Volume 1 chiefly comprises extensive tables to facilitate the reduction of a range of astronomical observations, including solar and sidereal movements, alongside thorough instructions. In the history of science, Pearson's work reflects the contemporary challenges of celestial study.

In the history of science, Pearson's work reflects the contemporary challenges of celestial study.

Erik Bloodaxe and Egil Skallagrimsson came to the fore, both for their narrative possibilities and examples of how events of the Viking period have come to be distorted and misunderstood. The eventual result is this book. The life of Erik begins with his background and career in Norway followed by his overseas adventures. After seizing power in northern England, he met a violent death there. Also covered is much of the life of the Icelander Egil Skallagrimsson, who tried his best to be a thorn in the side of Erik and his wife Gunnhild. After Erik fell, his kin fought desperately to maintain eminence. The western Viking movement was due to revive in a more organised form, but after sporadic outbursts of warfare eventually subsided to emerge as modern nations, whose folks were still to be culturally productive like their Viking forebears, but without their collective tendency to violence. To obtain a complete account, the sources were ransacked. Certain anomalies showed up, involving the identities of some of the characters and the places where events are said to or are believed to have taken place. Attention was directed to solving these problems. Discrepancies in the relationship between three English kings in the midtenth century and Scandinavians are particularly serious, but can be resolved with certain adjustments. For instance, students of these times have long disputed the location of the important Battle of Brunanburh. Yet another site is proposed, this being not so very far from York.Cover design is by Luke Pearson who graduated from Loughborough University and is the authors grandson. He has since been in demand as an illustrator.

The epic poem "Beowulf" has been explored by many scholars, but personal acquaintance revealed that some important aspects always seem to have been overlooked. This book''s intention was to correct such omissions, but discrepancy turned out to be widespread. Rather than being solely a contribution to Scandinavia''s history, the material mainly illustrates aspects of English origins as viewed by one of their own kind. A post-Roman doomed culture arose in eastern England. Largely ignored in English records, the history of this is obscure, but the geography is even more so, since reliable place-names are but few. The poem predominantly served as an allegorical tool and, laced with folklore, was used to comment on the behaviour of those in leadership roles, both in politics and religion. Synthesis even allows an identity to be suggested for the poet.

Let us start with the obvious. Living matter, having once emerged from obscure beginnings on this planet Earth - the home selected for it in the Universe - has continued to exist in countless different forms right to the present time. As a means to cope with the enormous diversity involved, natural scientists have created a comprehensive classification system. This enables one to get a grasp of the complexities of the chronological and biological relationships that all forms of life bear to one another. It is called the Linnaean System, named after Carl von Linne, its Swedish instigator. This is known more generally as taxonomy and the immediately following discourse is by way of a resume to aid those to whom it is not entirely familiar. Yet is it ultimately a completely satisfactory method? Will it ever be able to explain all aspects of evolution? In later chapters there will be some discussion on this matter and suggestions made that are meant to clarify points that hitherto have been inexplicable.
