The fourth volume of the Violinissimo series features the most important studies for the early years of violin lessons. Violin Studies contains selections from the standard works by Kayser, Dont, Wohlfahrt, Kreutzer and many others. This anthology is ideal for use in music lessons or for violinists who wish to develop their technique.

Camillo Sivori was considered a child prodigy in his day. He started playing the violin at the age of 2. He later became the only student of Niccolò Paganini. His 12 Étude-Caprices for solo violin demand a high degree of virtuosity. This critical new edition is based on the first edition, the practical playing arrangement was made by the Lübeck professor Maria Egelhof.

As a music publisher in Vienna, Franz Anton Hoffmeister secured an important place in music history. But he was also an extremely prolific and valued composer of Viennese Classic. His 12 Studies offer a compendium of playing techniques from the Mozart/Beethoven era, with scales, triads and position playing, double stops, arpeggios, as well as cantabile and polyphonic playing.

There is hardly a violinist who has not dealt with some or even all 42 ''Kreutzer etudes'' sometime or other: Études ou caprices form part of the standard repertoire. Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) has not least remained unforgotten because of Beethoven''s violin sonata of the same name - a work which had never been played by the violin virtuoso himself and not even been appreciated by him. His lightning career as a violinist led him into Napoleon''s private orchestra and as a virtuoso across Europe before an accident put an end to his solo career. As a violin teacher, he taught in private aristocratic circles, then at the later Conservatoire and laid the foundations for a comprehensive methodology and didactics. For his teaching activities, Kreutzer wrote his 40 Études ou caprices (two were later added by another) in 1796. The present urtext edition is based on the first edition and contains the original, occasionally surprisingly different musical text with the original fingering, with a ''modern'' setting being added. Even if Henryk Wieniawski once admitted: ''They are much more difficult than most violinists think'', these studies form an indispensable part of all violin studies.

The studies by Charles Dancla (1817–1907) are more than mere technical exercises. They demand a special sense of tone, an elegant, softly flowing and swinging way of playing. They challenge the violinist in all associated disciplines, such as staccato on an up- and downbow, arpeggios, double stop passages and rapid passages. Apart from that, Dancla again and again seeks the soft, singing sound areas and the refined sound.It is fun for both teacher and pupil to develop the violin playing technique in such a way. Furthermore, the delight in music-making is increased as every piece has its own characteristic, appearing not like a study but rather like a performance capriccio which could be played as an encore, for example.The present edition is based on the (presumed) first edition of the Parisian publisher S. Richault (plate number 12974.B.) from c. 1856. Added fingerings have been marked accordingly. Information on technical characteristics, playing suggestions, etc. are contained in the notes at the end of the volume.
