The symposium was organized with the intention of creating an opportunity for mathematicians and engineers working on nonlinear problems to communicate with each other and exchange experiences in the use of boundary integral methods. The spirit of the symposium is clearly reflected in the papers collected in the volume. Some mathematical issues of boundary integral methods for the solution of nonlinear problems are examined in depth. In addition, several applications to fluid and solid mechanics and heat transfer problems are presented. The reader is given a wide overview of the broad class of applications where boundary integral methods represent a very appealing tool for the analysis of nonlinear problems.

This is the second edition of the book which has two additional new chapters on Maxwell’s equations as well as a section on properties of solution spaces of Maxwell’s equations and their trace spaces. These two new chapters, which summarize the most up-to-date results in the literature for the Maxwell’s equations, are sufficient enough to serve as a self-contained introductory book on the modern mathematical theory of boundary integral equations in electromagnetics.The book now contains 12 chapters and is divided into two parts. The first six chapters present modern mathematical theory of boundary integral equations that arise in fundamental problems in continuum mechanics and electromagnetics based on the approach of variational formulations of the equations. The second six chapters present an introduction to basic classical theory of the pseudo-differential operators. The aforementioned corresponding boundary integral operators can now be recast as pseudo-differential operators. These serve as concrete examples that illustrate the basic ideas of how one may apply the theory of pseudo-differential operators and their calculus to obtain additional properties for the corresponding boundary integral operators. This monograph provides a rigorous analysis of a wide range of stationary (steady state) boundary value problems for elliptic systems of Stokes and Navier-Stokes type, as encountered in fluid dynamics. Addressing Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin, mixed, and transmission problems in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases, it makes systematic use of the notion of relaxed ellipticity recently introduced by the authors. The problems are treated in Lipschitz domains in the Euclidean setting as well as in compact Riemannian manifolds and in manifolds with cylindrical ends (non-compact manifolds), with given data in a variety of spaces – Lebesgue, standard or weighted Sobolev, Bessel potential, and Besov. A detailed and comprehensive study is provided of the main mathematical properties of boundary value problems related to the Navier-Stokes equations with variable coefficients, such as existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions. These are considered in bounded, periodic, and also unbounded domains, in the Euclidean setting as well as on manifolds (compact, or non-compact). The included results represent the authors’ contributions to the field of stationary Stokes, Navier-Stokes, and related equations, the main novelty being the analysis of the related boundary problems with anisotropic variable coefficients and on manifolds. This book is devoted to the mathematical foundation of boundary integral equations. The combination of ?nite element analysis on the boundary with these equations has led to very e?cient computational tools, the boundary element methods (see e.g., the authors [139] and Schanz and Steinbach (eds.) [267]). Although we do not deal with the boundary element discretizations in this book, the material presented here gives the mathematical foundation of these methods. In order to avoid over generalization we have con?ned ourselves to the treatment of elliptic boundary value problems. The central idea of eliminating the ?eld equations in the domain and - ducing boundary value problems to equivalent equations only on the bou- ary requires the knowledge of corresponding fundamental solutions, and this idea has a long history dating back to the work of Green [107] and Gauss [95, 96]. Today the resulting boundary integral equations still serve as a major tool for the analysis and construction of solutions to boundary value problems.

Furthermore, new approximate formulations have been proposed for boundary elements which appeared to work in engineering practice, but did not have a proper theoretical background. The Conference also discussed the engineering applications of the method and concentrated on a link between BEM practitioners, industrial users and researchers working on the latest development of the method. The editors would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Ms. Liz Newman and Mr. H. Schmitz for their unstinting work in the preparation of the Conference.
