"Foundations of the Formal Sciences" (FotFS) is a series of interdisciplinary conferences in mathematics, philosophy, computer science and linguistics. The main goal is to reestablish the traditionally strong links between these areas of research that have been lost in the past decades.The second conference in the series had the subtitle "Applications of Mathematical Logic in Philosophy and Linguistics" and brought speakers from all parts of the Formal Sciences together to give a holistic view of how mathematical methods can improve our philosophical and technical understanding of language and scientific discourse, ranging from the theoretical level up to applications in language recognition software.Audience: This volume is of interest to all formal philosophers and theoretical linguists. Erstmalig werden in diesem Buch alle vier von Kant formulierten Antinomien der reinen Vernunft zusammenhängend mit formallogischen Mitteln untersucht und ihre Gültigkeit aus der Perspektive der modernen Naturwissenschaft und Naturphilosophie kritisch beurteilt.

Zunächst rekonstruiert der Verfasser ausführlich die "metaphysische Deduktion" der transzendentalen und der kosmologischen Vernunftideen. Sodann wird Kants Lehre von den Antinomien der reinen Vernunft in den Kontext seiner theoretischen Philosophie eingeordnet; die philologische und formallogische Analyse der vier Antinomien schließt sich an. Unter Einbeziehung moderner naturwissenschaftlicher und naturphilosophischer Ergebnisse präsentiert der Autor abschließend eine systematische Beurteilung der Kantischen Argumentation.

This book presents the first critical evaluation of all four of Kant’s antinomies of pure reason by applying the instruments of formal logic and by testing the validity of the antinomies against the criteria of modern science and natural philosophy.

The author first reconstructs at length the ‘metaphysical deduction’ of the transcendental and cosmological ideas of reason. Kant''s doctrine of the antinomies of pure reason is then placed in the context of his theoretical philosophy, and this is followed by a philological and formal-logical analysis of the four antinomies. Using the findings of modern science and natural philosophy, the author finally presents a systematic evaluation of Kant’s argumentation.
