Globalization has become one of the most recurrent concepts in social and political sciences. More often than not, however, the concept is handled without much of a properly articulated theory capable of explaining its historical origin and expansion. For education researchers attempting to elucidate how global changes and processes affect their field of study, this situation is problematic. The Oxford Handbook on Education and Globalization brings together in a unique way leading authors in social theory and in political science and reflects on how these two distinct disciplinary approaches deal with the relation between globalization and education. Part I develops a firmer and tighter dialogue between social theory, long concerned with theories of globalization, and education research. It presents, discusses, and compares three major attempts to theorize the process of globalization and its relation to education: the neo-institutionalist theorization of world culture, the materialist and domination perspectives, and Luhmann's theory of world society. Part II analyses the political and institutional factors that shape the adoption of global reforms at the national and local level of governance, emphasizing the role of different contexts in shaping policy outcomes. It engages with the existing debates of globalization mainly in the field of public policy and comparative politics and explores the social, political, and economic implications of globalization for national systems of education, their organizations, and institutions.

Since the 1980s, teaching has greatly changed in terms of the status and attractiveness of the profession, labor markets, and accountability models. At the same time, the profession has become increasingly subject to global discourses and a variety of new governance mechanisms.In The Liberalization of Teacher Employment Regimes in Europe, the authors answer two critical questions for the future of the teaching profession: How does the teaching profession (re)institutionalize itself in a globalizing world? And how does globalization affect the central mechanisms of a profession, such as its models of education and professional development, modes of recruitment, and labor markets and careers? Although these changes are global in nature, this book addresses the structural and cultural environments that shape the employment regimes of the teaching profession in the European context. Based on a multiscalar study, the book examines the reconfiguration of teachers' careers by analyzing the joint evolutions of the European Union's governance of education and teachers, and of employment regimes in two contrasting European countries (England and France). Observing different trajectories of employment liberalization in the two countries, emblematic of liberal or bureaucratic public professions, leads the authors to discuss different scenarios for the future of the teaching profession in Europe.

The World Yearbook of Education 2025 analyzes teacher policies and the governance of the teaching profession in the contemporary context of major societal changes and globalizing processes.The first volume dedicated to an overview of globalized teacher policies and their implications for the status of the teaching profession across the world, this book reflects the ambition to advance the debate on the challenges and opportunities associated with the teaching profession. It recognizes that teacher policy is situated at the crossroads of three logics that have changed and become more complex due to globalization processes since the 1970s: the logic of teacher policy regulation has shifted from state-centric government toward pluriscalar global governance; the logic of employment relations has shifted to a flexibility paradigm; the logic of teacher education has shifted from the transmission of knowledge in teacher education to teachers’ lifelong learning.
