Inter-domain routing security is a big actor in end-to-end network connectivity. The protocol currently implemented was not designed to cover such a critical aspect, and so many vulnerabilities crop up, having a strong impact on the whole system. Despite much effort in the past focusing in addressing security issues, no solutions have become a reality, hence novel solutions must be sought to reduce the vulnerabilities space. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a critical component of the Internet's infrastructure used as the de facto inter-domain routing protocol among autonomous systems. It was conceived without an internal security mechanism and hence is prone to a number of vulnerabilities and attacks, which have resulted in partial paralysis of the Internet. Thus, securing BGP has been an active research area for almost a decade now. Several strategies, ranging from complete replacement of BGP to addition of new features in it, were proposed for the purpose of security but none of them were pragmatic enough to be adopted. Recently, the Secure Inter-Domain Routing (SIDR) working group of the IETF has put forward a set of recommendations which seem promising to some extent. This book introduces the reader to the main concepts in inter-domain security, reviewing the most significant contributions and also introducing the current efforts being developed by the scientific community to deal with the overall weaknesses and limitations that still exist.

The optical networking field is seen to be rapidly emerging with a strong and s- tained technological and business growth. Research has led to massive development and deployment in the optical networking space leading to significant advancements in high speed network core and access networks. th The 11 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling brought together scientists and researchers to meet and exchange ideas and recent work in this emerging area of networking. The conference was sponsored by IFIP and supported by the e-Photon/ONe and COST 291 projects. The conference proceedings have been published by Springer and are also available through the Springer digital library. The conference program f- tured 14 invited presentations and 41 contributed papers selected from over 90 s- missions. A series of sessions focusing on recent developments in optical networking and the related technology issues constituted the main conference program. The international workshop “Optical network perspectives vs. optical technologies th reality” was collocated with ONDM 2007 and took place on May 29 . It was org- ized by the EU COST 291 action. The objective of the workshop was to focus on cross layer issues and address various challenges with respect to the implementation of optical networking concepts based on available optical technology capabilities.

Beginning with the first event in 2002, the International Conference on Wired/ Wireless Internet Communications (WWIC) has continuously been established as a highly selective conference focusing on integration and co-existence of rapidly dev- oping wireless network technologies and their applications related to the Internet. To do so WWIC provides an international forum for presenting and discussing cutti- edge research in this domain, and the 8th edition of WWIC, held at Luleå University in June 2010, continued this tradition. The WWIC 2010 call for papers attracted 45 submissions from more than 25 countries and each contribution was subject to thorough peer review by recognized int- national experts that acted as members of the Technical Program Committee. The selection process resulted in 16 accepted papers, which were thematically grouped into 5 technical sessions. The major themes of WWIC 2010 were cooperation, management of multimedia traffic, advancing IEEE 802.11, cognitive optimization, mesh and multi-hop networks, security, signaling, control, and wireless sensor networks.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 9th IFIP TC 6 International Conference on Wired/Wireless Internet Communications, WWIC 2011, held in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain, in June 2011. The 26 contributions included were carefully reviewed and selected from 50 submissions. In addition the book contains 15 invited papers. The contributions are structured in topical sections on mobility and LTE networks; performance and simulation analysis; adaptive approaches to guarantee E2E network services; energy efficiency and cooperation in wireless networks; transmission and management; quality through routing, naming and control; wireless multi-hop communications challenges in the future internet; and emerging contributions.
