This Element explores the changing landscape of eBook businesses and cultures in China in the past two decades and examines how disruptive innovation and the platform economy have transformed one of the world's largest book markets. Through an evolutionary perspective, this Element documents and analyses the emergence, growth, and refinement of disruptive models in three areas of trade publishing, including free eBook developments, digital self-publishing, and platformed social reading. It offers a critical account of the complex interplay between emerging technologies, business innovations, and book cultures and conceptualises China's eBook evolution as both a part of global digital publishing transformation in the platform age and an embodiment of local dynamics in a transitional society. This Element is essential for scholars, students, publishers, and the interested publics to understand China's digital publishing innovations and their global implications.

The architect, historian and critic Peter Blundell Jones (1949–2016) considered architecture as an expansive field within the arts and humanities and social sciences that included landscape and urban studies. His focus within this built environment was firmly on people and place, which to him meant developing a comprehension of the broad human, material and social engagements with specific localities.His favourite way to explore this human and environmental focus was through case studies of individual places, leading to a modus operandi to tackle the study of any place in a generous, rigorous and comprehensive manner that used the skills of related professions, of the sciences as well as of psychology and anthropology. Being able to adopt such interdisciplinarity determined the real value of his output, which was further enriched through the thick interpretation of placemaking in non-Western cultures.This book, celebrating the East-West Studies in Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield co-founded by Peter Blundell Jones in 1995, presents 16 distinctive case studies in order to underline the relevance of his case study methodology and global legacy. The real-world data, though massive, is largely unstructured, in the form of natural-language text. It is challenging but highly desirable to mine structures from massive text data, without extensive human annotation and labeling. In this book, we investigate the principles and methodologies of mining structures of factual knowledge (e.g., entities and their relationships) from massive, unstructured text corpora. Departing from many existing structure extraction methods that have heavy reliance on human annotated data for model training, our effort-light approach leverages human-curated facts stored in external knowledge bases as distant supervision and exploits rich data redundancy in large text corpora for context understanding. This effort-light mining approach leads to a series of new principles and powerful methodologies for structuring text corpora, including (1) entity recognition, typing and synonym discovery, (2) entity relation extraction, and (3) open-domain attribute-valuemining and information extraction. This book introduces this new research frontier and points out some promising research directions.
