Analysis at Large is dedicated to Jean Bourgain whose research has deeply influenced the mathematics discipline, particularly in analysis and its interconnections with other fields. In this volume, the contributions made by renowned experts present both research and surveys on a wide spectrum of subjects, each of which pay tribute to a true mathematical pioneer. Examples of topics discussed in this book include Bourgain’s discretized sum-product theorem, his work in nonlinear dispersive equations, the slicing problem by Bourgain, harmonious sets, the joint spectral radius, equidistribution of affine random walks, Cartan covers and doubling Bernstein type inequalities, a weighted Prékopa-Leindler inequality and sumsets with quasicubes, the fractal uncertainty principle for the Walsh-Fourier transform, the continuous formulation of shallow neural networks as Wasserstein-type gradient flows, logarithmic quantum dynamical bounds for arithmetically defined ergodic Schrödinger operators, polynomial equations in subgroups, trace sets of restricted continued fraction semigroups, exponential sums, twisted multiplicativity and moments, the ternary Goldbach problem, as well as the multiplicative group generated by two primes in Z/QZ.It is hoped that this volume will inspire further research in the areas of analysis treated in this book and also provide direction and guidance for upcoming developments in this essential subject of mathematics.

In the 20th century, many mathematicians in Russia made great contributions to the field of mathematics. This invaluable book, which presents the main achievements of Russian mathematicians in that century, is the first most comprehensive book on Russian mathematicians. It has been produced as a gesture of respect and appreciation for those mathematicians and it will serve as a good reference and an inspiration for future mathematicians. It presents differences in mathematical styles and focuses on Soviet mathematicians who often discussed “what to do” rather than “how to do it”. Thus, the book will be valued beyond historical documentation. The editor, Professor Yakov Sinai, a distinguished Russian mathematician, has taken pains to select leading Russian mathematicians — such as Lyapunov, Luzin, Egorov, Kolmogorov, Pontryagin, Vinogradov, Sobolev, Petrovski and Krein — and their most important works. One can, for example, find works of Lyapunov, which parallel those of Poincaré; and works of Luzin, whose analysis plays a very important role in the history of Russian mathematics; Kolmogorov has established the foundations of probability based on analysis. The editor has tried to provide some parity and, at the same time, included papers that are of interest even today. The original works of the great mathematicians will prove to be enjoyable to readers and useful to the many researchers who are preserving the interest in how mathematics was done in the former Soviet Union.

Yakov G Sinai is one of the most important and influential mathematicians and physicists. He won the Wolf Prize for Mathematics in 1997 and Nemmers Prize in 2002.This volume contain several papers, some papers related to probability theory and statistical physics, papers on Anderson localization for some classes of Schroedinger equations and the papers on Interval Exchange Transformations, joint with C Ulcigrai and A Bufetov. Of notable mention are the paper on the distribution of the first positive sums in the case of independent random variables which was the author's first publication and the joint paper with V Yakhot which had several applications among hydrodynamical community.

This invaluable book features bibliographies, important papers, and speeches (for example at international congresses) of Wolf Prize winners, such as V I Arnold, P R Deligne, H Furstenberg, I M Gel'fand, P A Griffiths, M Gromov and G A Margulis. This is the first time that documents on Wolf Prize winners have been published together. Since the work of the Wolf laureates covers a wide spectrum, much of the mathematics of the twentieth century comes to life in this book.
