A compendium of health care quantitative techniques based in Excel Analytics and Decision Support in Health Care Operations is a comprehensive introductory guide to quantitative techniques, with practical Excel-based solutions for strategic health care management. This new third edition has been extensively updated to reflect the continuously evolving field, with new coverage of predictive analytics, geographical information systems, flow process improvement, lean management, six sigma, health provider productivity and benchmarking, project management, simulation, and more. Each chapter includes additional new exercises to illustrate everyday applications, and provides clear direction on data acquisition under a variety of hospital information systems. Instructor support includes updated Excel templates, PowerPoint slides, web based chapter end supplements, and data banks to facilitate classroom instruction, and working administrators will appreciate the depth and breadth of information with clear applicability to everyday situations. The ability to use analytics effectively is a critical skill for anyone involved in the study or practice of health services administration. This book provides a comprehensive set of methods spanning tactical, operational, and strategic decision making and analysis for both current and future health care administrators. Learn critical analytics and decision support techniques specific to health care administrationIncrease efficiency and effectiveness in problem-solving and decision supportLocate appropriate data in different commonly-used hospital information systemsConduct analyses, simulations, productivity measurements, scheduling, and moreFrom statistical techniques like multiple regression, decision-tree analysis, queuing and simulation, to field-specific applications including surgical suite scheduling, roster management, quality monitoring, and more, analytics play a central role in health care administration. Analytics and Decision Support in Health Care Operations provides essential guidance on these critical skills that every professional needs.

An expert guide on the application of health care data and analytics to difficult operations and management problems In the newly revised fourth edition of Health Care Analytics and Operations Management: History, Diagnosis, and Empirical Foundations, a team of veteran health analytics and administration experts delivers an incisive discussion of the real-world application of health care analytics and decision support in health administration and health care management. The authors deploy contemporary examples from the field and the book provides complimentary access to online resources for professors, including PowerPoint lecture slides, chapter exercise solutions, sample curse syllabi, and health care data sets. They've also included a selection of experiential projects that demonstrate the hands-on use of the methods and concepts covered in the book. Readers will find: An intuitive, Excel-focused set of solutions to common health administration problems, complete with templates and analytical toolsStep-by-step discussions of the application of analytic techniques for effective health care decision makingExtensive tables, figures, appendices, and practice exercises to support the material explained in the bookPerfect for students of one-semester courses in graduate and advanced undergraduate health care management and administration programs, Health Care Analytics and Operations Management is also a must-read resource for practicing health care managers seeking a hands-on guide to solving common challenges in the field.

This new edition continues to emphasize the use of data envelopment analysis (DEA) to create optimization-based benchmarks within hospitals, physician group practices, health maintenance organizations, nursing homes and other health care delivery organizations. Suitable for graduate students learning DEA applications in health care as well as for practicing administrators, it is divided into two sections covering methods and applications.Section I considers efficiency evaluations using DEA; returns to scale; weight restricted (multiplier) models; non-oriented or slack-based models, including in this edition two versions of non-controllable variable models and categorical variable models; longitudinal (panel) evaluations and the effectiveness dimension of performance evaluation. A new chapter then looks at new and advanced models of DEA, including super-efficiency, congestion DEA, network DEA, and dynamic network models. Mathematical formulations of various DEA models are placed in end-of-chapter appendices.Section II then looks at health care applications within particular settings, chapter-by-chapter, including hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes and health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Other chapters then explore home health care and home health agencies; dialysis centers, community mental health centers, community-based your services, organ procurement organizations, aging agencies and dental providers; DEA models to evaluate provider performance for specific treatments, including stroke, mechanical ventilation and perioperative services. A new chapter then examines international-country-based applications of DEA in health care in 16 different countries, along with OECD and multi-country studies. Most of the existing chapters in this section were expanded with recent applications.Included with the book is online access to a learning version of DEA Solver software, written by Professor Kaoru Tone, which can solve up to 50 DMUsfor various DEA models listed in the User’s Guide at the end of the book.
