This book bridges the widening gap between two crucial constituents of computational intelligence: the rapidly advancing technologies of machine learning in the digital information age, and the relatively slow-moving field of general-purpose search and optimization algorithms. With this in mind, the book serves to offer a data-driven view of optimization, through the framework of memetic computation (MC). The authors provide a summary of the complete timeline of research activities in MC – beginning with the initiation of memes as local search heuristics hybridized with evolutionary algorithms, to their modern interpretation as computationally encoded building blocks of problem-solving knowledge that can be learned from one task and adaptively transmitted to another. In the light of recent research advances, the authors emphasize the further development of MC as a simultaneous problem learning and optimization paradigm with the potential to showcase human-like problem-solvingprowess; that is, by equipping optimization engines to acquire increasing levels of intelligence over time through embedded memes learned independently or via interactions. In other words, the adaptive utilization of available knowledge memes makes it possible for optimization engines to tailor custom search behaviors on the fly – thereby paving the way to general-purpose problem-solving ability (or artificial general intelligence). In this regard, the book explores some of the latest concepts from the optimization literature, including, the sequential transfer of knowledge across problems, multitasking, and large-scale (high dimensional) search, systematically discussing associated algorithmic developments that align with the general theme of memetics. The presented ideas are intended to be accessible to a wide audience of scientific researchers, engineers, students, and optimization practitioners who are familiar with the commonly used terminologies of evolutionary computation. A full appreciation of the mathematical formalizations and algorithmic contributions requires an elementary background in probability, statistics, and the concepts of machine learning. A prior knowledge of surrogate-assisted/Bayesian optimization techniques is useful, but not essential.

The three-volume set "LNCS 3610, LNCS 3611, and LNCS 3612" constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Natural Computation, ICNC 2005, held in Changsha, China, in August 2005 as a joint event with the Second International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery FSKD 2005 (LNAI volumes 3613 and 3614). The program committee selected 313 carefully revised full papers and 189 short papers for presentation in three volumes from 1887 submissions. The first volume includes all the contributions related to learning algorithms and architectures in neural networks, neurodynamics, statistical neural network models and support vector machines, and other topics in neural network models; cognitive science, neuroscience informatics, bioinformatics, and bio-medical engineering, and neural network applications such as communications and computer networks, expert system and informatics, and financial engineering. The second volume concentrates on neural network applications as pattern recognition and diagnostics, robotics and intelligent control, signal processing and multi-media, and other neural network applications; evolutionary learning, artificial immune systems, evolutionary theory, membrane, molecular, DNA computing, and ant colony systems. The third volume deals with evolutionary methodology, quantum computing, swarm intelligence and intelligent agents; natural computation applications as bioinformatics and bio-medical engineering, robotics and intelligent control, and other applications of natural computation; hardware implementations of natural computation, and fuzzy neural systems as well as soft computing.

This book compiles recent advances of evolutionary algorithms in dynamic and uncertain environments within a unified framework. The book is motivated by the fact that some degree of uncertainty is inevitable in characterizing any realistic engineering systems. Discussion includes representative methods for addressing major sources of uncertainties in evolutionary computation, including handle of noisy fitness functions, use of approximate fitness functions, search for robust solutions, and tracking moving optimums.

The application of sophisticated evolutionary computing approaches for solving complex problems with multiple conflicting objectives in science and engineering have increased steadily in the recent years. Within this growing trend, Memetic algorithms are, perhaps, one of the most successful stories, having demonstrated better efficacy in dealing with multi-objective problems as compared to its conventional counterparts. Nonetheless, researchers are only beginning to realize the vast potential of multi-objective Memetic algorithm and there remain many open topics in its design. This book presents a very first comprehensive collection of works, written by leading researchers in the field, and reflects the current state-of-the-art in the theory and practice of multi-objective Memetic algorithms. "Multi-Objective Memetic algorithms" is organized for a wide readership and will be a valuable reference for engineers, researchers, senior undergraduates and graduate students who are interested in the areas of Memetic algorithms and multi-objective optimization.

Evolutionary computation is a class of problem optimization methodology with the inspiration from the natural evolution of species. In nature, the population of a species evolves by means of selection and variation. These two principles of natural evolution form the fundamental of evolutionary - gorithms (EAs). During the past several decades, EAs have been extensively studied by the computer science and arti?cial intelligence communities. As a classofstochasticoptimizationtechniques,EAscanoftenoutperformclassical optimization techniques for di?cult real world problems. Due to the ease of use and robustness, EAs have been applied to a wide variety of optimization problems. Most of these optimization problems ta- led are stationary and deterministic. However, many real-world optimization problems are subjected to dynamic and uncertain environments that are often impossible to avoid in practice. For example, the ?tness function is uncertain or noisy as a result of simulation errors, measurement errors or approximation errors. In addition, the design variables or environmental conditions may also perturb or change over time. For these dynamic and uncertain optimization problems, the objective of the EA is no longer to simply locate the global optimum solution, but to continuously track the optimum in dynamic en- ronments, or to ?nd a robust solution that operates optimally in the presence of uncertainties. This poses serious challenges to classical optimization te- niques and conventional EAs as well. However, conventional EAs with proper enhancements are still good tools of choice for optimization problems in - namic and uncertain environments.
