Traditional literature in mathematical physics is clustered around classical mechanics, especially fluids and elasticity. This book reflects the modern development of theoretical physics in the areas of field theories: classical, quantum, and gravitational, in which differential equations play essential roles and offer powerful insight. Yang here presents a broad range of fundamental topics in theoretical and mathematical physics based on the viewpoint of differential equations. The subject areas covered include classical and quantum many-body problems, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, magnetic monopoles, special relativity, gauge field theories, general relativity, superconductivity, vortices and other topological solitons, and canonical quantization of fields, for which knowledge and use of linear and nonlinear differential equations are essential for comprehension. Much emphasis is given to the mathematical and physical content offering an appreciation of the interplay of mathematics and theoretical physics from the viewpoint of differential equations. Advanced methods and techniques of modern nonlinear functional analysis are kept to a minimum and each chapter is supplemented with a collection of exercises of varied depths making it an ideal resource for students and researchers alike.

There are two approaches in the study of differential equations of field theory. The first, finding closed-form solutions, works only for a narrow category of problems. This book focuses on the second, which is to investigate solutions using tools from modern nonlinear analysis. Written by a well known active researcher, this book is useful to both mathematicians and theoretical physicists, especially those interested in nonlinear analysis.

The second edition of this engaging textbook for advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduates covers all the core subjects in linear algebra. It has a unique emphasis on integrating ideas from analysis, in addition to pure algebra, and features a balance of abstraction, practicality, and contemporary applications. Four chapters examine some of the most important of these applications, including quantum mechanics, machine learning, data science, and quantum information. The material is supplemented by a rich collection of exercises designed for students from diverse backgrounds, including a wealth of newly added ones in this edition. Selected solutions are provided at the back of the book for use in self-study, and full solutions are available online to instructors.

This engaging textbook for advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduates covers the core subjects in linear algebra. The author motivates the concepts by drawing clear links to applications and other important areas, such as differential topology and quantum mechanics. The book places particular emphasis on integrating ideas from analysis wherever appropriate. For example, the notion of determinant is shown to appear from calculating the index of a vector field which leads to a self-contained proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, and the Cayley–Hamilton theorem is established by recognizing the fact that the set of complex matrices of distinct eigenvalues is dense. The material is supplemented by a rich collection of over 350 mostly proof-oriented exercises, suitable for students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Selected solutions are provided at the back of the book, making it suitable for self-study as well as for use as a course text.

This book presents a concise yet comprehensive introduction to the core theory of mathematical statistics. By integrating fundamental probability theory with modern inferential methods, it offers a logically coherent progression from the basic principles of estimation and testing to Bayesian inference and regression.Although compact, the book is thorough in its treatment of the essential architecture of statistical inference. Key topics include sampling theory, point and interval estimation, parametric and nonparametric inference, hypothesis testing, Bayesian methods, correlation, regression, and logistic modeling. Each Lecture provides carefully chosen examples, full proofs or validations of major results, and exercises designed to consolidate understanding. The text comprises fifteen focused Lectures, each designed to correspond to one or two class sessions. This structure allows the material to be covered comfortably in a single semester while providing a rigorous foundation for upper-undergraduate and graduate students, as well as practitioners. The exposition emphasizes transparent derivations and conceptual motivation rather than formulaic presentation, reflecting the author’s aim to make every result both intuitively and mathematically meaningful.

Mathematical sciences have been playing an increasingly important role in modern society. They are in high demand for investigating complex problems in physical science, environmental and geophysical sciences, materials science, life science and chemical sciences. This is a review volume on some timely and interesting topics in applied mathematical sciences. It surveys new developments and presents some future research directions in these topics. The chapters are written by experts in these fields, with a wide audience in mind and hence will be accessible to graduate students, junior researchers and other professionals who are interested in the subjects. The contributions of Professor Youzhong Guo, a leading expert in these areas, will be celebrated. His life and academic achievements are highlighted in the Preface and Postscript of the book. The underlying theme that binds the various chapters seamlessly is a set of dedicated ideas and techniques from partial differential equations and dynamical systems.
