Noncommutative differential geometry is a new approach to classical geometry. It was originally used by Fields Medalist A. Connes in the theory of foliations, where it led to striking extensions of Atiyah-Singer index theory. It also may be applicable to hitherto unsolved geometric phenomena and physical experiments. However, noncommutative differential geometry was not well understood even among mathematicians. Therefore, an international symposium on commutative differential geometry and its applications to physics was held in Japan, in July 1999. Topics covered included: deformation problems, Poisson groupoids, operad theory, quantization problems, and D-branes. The meeting was attended by both mathematicians and physicists, which resulted in interesting discussions. This volume contains the refereed proceedings of this symposium. Providing a state of the art overview of research in these topics, this book is suitable as a source book for a seminar in noncommutative geometry and physics.

Hideki Omori is widely recognized as one of the world’s most creative and original mathematicians. This volume is dedicated to Hideki Omori on the occasion of his retirement from Tokyo University of Science. His retirement was also celebrated in April 2004 with an in?uential conference at the Morito Hall of Tokyo University of Science. Hideki Omori was born in Nishionmiya, Hyogo prefecture, in 1938 and was an undergraduate and graduate student at Tokyo University, where he was awarded his Ph.D degree in 1966 on the study of transformation groups on manifolds [3], which became one of his major research interests. He started his ?rst research position at Tokyo Metropolitan University. In 1980, he moved to Okayama University, and then became a professor of Tokyo University of Science in 1982, where he continues to work today. Hideki Omori was invited to many of the top international research institutions, including the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton in 1967, the Mathematics Institute at the University of Warwick in 1970, and Bonn University in 1972. Omori received the Geometry Prize of the Mathematical Society of Japan in 1996 for his outstanding contributions to the theory of in?nite-dimensional Lie groups.

Symplectic geometry originated in physics, but it has flourished as an independent subject in mathematics, together with its offspring, symplectic topology. Symplectic methods have even been applied back to mathematical physics. Noncommutative geometry has developed an alternative mathematical quantization scheme based on a geometric approach to operator algebras. Deformation quantization, a blend of symplectic methods and noncommutative geometry, approaches quantum mechanics from a more algebraic viewpoint, as it addresses quantization as a deformation of Poisson structures. This volume contains seven chapters based on lectures given by invited speakers at two May 2010 workshops held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute: Symplectic and Poisson Geometry in Interaction with Analysis, Algebra and Topology (honoring Alan Weinstein, one of the key figures in the field) and Symplectic Geometry, Noncommutative Geometry and Physics. The chapters include presentations of previously unpublished results and comprehensive reviews, including recent developments in these areas.

This volume reflects the growing collaboration between mathematicians and theoretical physicists to treat the foundations of quantum field theory using the mathematical tools of q-deformed algebras and noncommutative differential geometry. Noncommutative differential geometry is a novel approach to geometry, aimed in part at applications in physics. It was founded in the early eighties by the 1982 Fields Medalist Alain Connes on the basis of his fundamental works in operator algebras. It is now a very active branch of mathematics with actual and potential applications to a variety of domains in physics ranging from solid state to quantization of gravity. The strategy is to formulate usual differential geometry in a somewhat unusual manner, using in particular operator algebras and related concepts, so as to be able to plug in noncommutativity in a natural way. Algebraic tools such as K-theory and cyclic cohomology and homology play an important role in this field. It is an important topic both for mathematics and physics.
