Transforming Informality examines the politics of informal settlement redevelopment in China, India, and Brazil. As three of the world's largest emerging economies, these countries have recently experienced rapid urbanization, with a substantial share of their urban population living in unplanned residential areas known as informal settlements. These communities have increasingly become focal points of urban restructuring, yet the purposes, processes, and outcomes of such transformation vary significantly, with profound consequences for the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of urbanites. The book compares the redevelopment of four types of informal settlements across the three countries: urban villages in Guangzhou, China; slums in Mumbai, India; and favelas in Rio de Janeiro and movement occupations in São Paulo, Brazil. It argues that their divergent redevelopment trajectories are shaped primarily by different models of urban governance, through which state and nonstate actors interact to make and implement policy decisions. Building on two key dimensions-effectiveness and inclusiveness-the book develops a typology of urban governance (integrated, directive, contested, and transactional) to explain how governance configurations vary and how this variation produces distinct spatial and social outcomes across countries. As China, India, and Brazil assume increasingly prominent roles in the global economy and world affairs, the comparison of their urban transformation provides a distinctive lens for understanding their broader national development pathways. Drawing on comparative historical analysis and extensive fieldwork, the book offers new insights into urbanization, governance, and citizenship in the Global South.

While urban preservation is almost as old as cities themselves, it has become increasingly controversial in modern cities. In this book, Yue Zhang presents a cross-national comparative analysis of the politics of urban preservation. Based on comprehensive archival research and more than two hundred in-depth interviews in Beijing, Chicago, and Paris, Zhang finds that urban preservation provides a tool for diverse political and social actors to frame their propositions and advance their favored courses of action. In cities from West to East, divergent political and economic interests have caused urban preservation to become contested. Exploring three of the world’s great cities, Zhang deftly navigates readers through each case study, illustrating the complexities of the politics of urban preservation in each city. In Beijing, urban preservation was integral to promoting economic growth and enhancing the city’s image during the lead-up to the 2008 Olympics; in Chicago, it is used to increase property values and revitalize neighborhoods; and in Paris, it offers a channel for national and municipal governments to compete for control over urban space. Although urban preservation serves various purposes in these cities, Zhang explains how different types of political fragmentation have affected the implementation of preservation initiatives in predictable ways, thus generating distinct patterns of urban preservation. Explores how poetry was used to disseminate and interpret history in early medieval China.Lore and Verse is the first English-language book dedicated entirely to studying poems on history (yongshi shi) in premodern China. Focusing on works by poets from the entire range of early medieval China (220–589), Yue Zhang explores how history was disseminated and interpreted through poetry, as well as how and why certain historical figures were commemorated in poetry. The book presents findings of anthropological studies conducted by researchers from Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center in a number of African countries, including Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. The aim of these ethnological studies is to understand the Center’s experience in these countries as well as the way it works in terms of institutional arrangement, interaction between Chinese and local staff and technology transfer. A basic contention of the book is that insofar as these Centers showcase China’s achievements in domestic development for purpose of sharing the country’s experiences with host countries, what they do essentially points toward a new and innovative approach to foreign aid.
