Wavelets Made Easy, written at the level of a first course in calculus and linear algebra, offers a lucid and concise explanation of mathematical wavelets. Evolving from ten years of classroom use, its accessible presentation is designed for undergraduates in a variety of disciplines (computer science, engineering, mathematics, mathematical sciences) as well as for practicing professionals in these areas. This unique text starts the first chapter with a description of the key features and applications of wavelets, focusing on Haar's wavelets but using only high school mathematics. The next two chapters; introduce one-, two-, and three-dimensional wavelets, with only the occasional use of matrix algebra. The second part of this book provides the foundations of least squares approximation, the discrete Fourier transform, and Fourier series. The third part explains the Fourier transform and then demonstrates how to apply basic Fourier analysis to designing and analyzing mathematical wavelets. Particular attention is paid to Daubechies wavelets.Numerous exercises, a bibliography, and a comprehensive index combine to make this book an excellent text for the classroom as well as a valuable resource for self-study.

This volume presents complex analysis in one variable in the context of modern mathematics, with connections to several complex variables, de Rham theory, real analysis, and other branches of mathematics. Covering spaces are used in dealing with Cauchy's theorem, real variable methods are illustrated in the Loman-Menchoff theorem and in the corona theorem, and the algebraic structure of the ring of holomorphic functions on a domain in C is studied. The book illustrates mathematical ideas and tools. Cohomological methods are introduced, in connection with the existence of primatives and in the study of meromorphic funtion as on a compact Riemann surface. This second edition has exercises, problems and examples for students, so they can consolidate their command of complex analysis and its relations to other branches of mathematics.

This modem introduction to the foundations of logic, mathematics, and computer science answers frequent questions that mysteriously remain mostly unanswered in other texts: • Why is the truth table for the logical implication so unintuitive? • Why are there no recipes to design proofs? • Where do these numerous mathematical rules come from? • What are the applications of formal logic and abstract mathematics? • What issues in logic, mathematics, and computer science still remain unresolved? Answers to such questions must necessarily present both theory and significant applica tions, which explains the length of the book. The text first shows how real life provides some guidance for the selection of axioms for the basis of a logical system, for instance, Boolean, classical, intuitionistic, or minimalistic logic. From such axioms, the text then derives de tailed explanations of the elements of modem logic and mathematics: set theory, arithmetic, number theory, combinatorics, probability, and graph theory, with applications to computer science. The motivation for such detail, and for the organization of the material, lies in a continuous thread from logic and mathematics to their uses in everyday life.

This book explains the nature and computation of mathematical wavelets, which provide a framework and methods for the analysis and the synthesis of signals, images, and other arrays of data. The material presented here addresses the au dience of engineers, financiers, scientists, and students looking for explanations of wavelets at the undergraduate level. It requires only a working knowledge or memories of a first course in linear algebra and calculus. The first part of the book answers the following two questions: What are wavelets? Wavelets extend Fourier analysis. How are wavelets computed? Fast transforms compute them. To show the practical significance of wavelets, the book also provides transitions into several applications: analysis (detection of crashes, edges, or other events), compression (reduction of storage), smoothing (attenuation of noise), and syn thesis (reconstruction after compression or other modification). Such applications include one-dimensional signals (sounds or other time-series), two-dimensional arrays (pictures or maps), and three-dimensional data (spatial diffusion). The ap plications demonstrated here do not constitute recipes for real implementations, but aim only at clarifying and strengthening the understanding of the mathematics of wavelets.

Originally published in 1999, Wavelets Made Easy offers a lucid and concise explanation of mathematical wavelets. Written at the level of a first course in calculus and linear algebra, its accessible presentation is designed for undergraduates in a variety of disciplines—computer science, engineering, mathematics, mathematical sciences—as well as for practicing professionals in these areas. The present softcover reprint retains the corrections from the second printing (2001) and makes this unique text available to a wider audience. The first chapter starts with a description of the key features and applications of wavelets, focusing on Haar's wavelets but using only high-school mathematics. The next two chapters introduce one-, two-, and three-dimensional wavelets, with only the occasional use of matrix algebra. The second part of this book provides the foundations of least-squares approximation, the discrete Fourier transform, and Fourier series. The third part explains the Fourier transform and then demonstrates how to apply basic Fourier analysis to designing and analyzing mathematical wavelets. Particular attention is paid to Daubechies wavelets. Numerous exercises, a bibliography, and a comprehensive index combine to make this book an excellent text for the classroom as well as a valuable resource for self-study.

This text for the first or second year undergraduate in mathematics, logic, computer science, or social sciences, introduces the reader to logic, proofs, sets, and number theory. It also serves as an excellent independent study reference and resource for instructors. Adapted from Foundations of Logic and Mathematics: Applications to Science and Cryptography © 2002 Birkhӓuser, this second edition provides a modern introduction to the foundations of logic, mathematics, and computers science, developing the theory that demonstrates construction of all mathematics and theoretical computer science from logic and set theory. The focuses is on foundations, with specific statements of all the associated axioms and rules of logic and set theory, and provides complete details and derivations of formal proofs. Copious references to literature that document historical development is also provided.Answers are found to many questions that usually remain unanswered: Why is the truth table for logical implication so unintuitive? Why are there no recipes to design proofs? Where do these numerous mathematical rules come from? What issues in logic, mathematics, and computer science still remain unresolved? And the perennial question: In what ways are we going to use this material? Additionally, the selection of topics presented reflects many major accomplishments from the twentieth century and includes applications in game theory and Nash'sequilibrium, Gale and Shapley's match making algorithms, Arrow's Impossibility Theorem in voting, to name a few. From the reviews of the first edition:"...All the results are proved in full detail from first principles...remarkably, the arithmetic laws on the rational numbers are proved, step after step, starting from the very definitions!...This is a valuable reference text and a useful companion for anybody wondering how basic mathematical concepts can be rigorously developed within set theory."—MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS"Rigorous and modern in its theoretical aspect, attractive as a detective novel in its applied aspects, this paper book deserves the attention of both beginners and advanced students in mathematics, logic and computer sciences as well as in social sciences."—Zentralblatt MATH
