For most Americans today, Roe v. Wade concerns just one thing: the right to choose abortion. But the Supreme Court’s decision once meant much more. The justices ruled that the right to privacy encompassed the abortion decision. Grassroots activists and politicians used Roe—and popular interpretations of it—as raw material in answering much larger questions: Is there a right to privacy? For whom, and what is protected?As Mary Ziegler demonstrates, Roe’s privacy rationale attracted a wide range of citizens demanding social changes unrelated to abortion. Movements questioning hierarchies based on sexual orientation, profession, class, gender, race, and disability drew on Roe to argue for an autonomy that would give a voice to the vulnerable. So did advocates seeking expanded patient rights and liberalized euthanasia laws. Right-leaning groups also invoked Roe’s right to choose, but with a different agenda: to attack government involvement in consumer protection, social welfare, racial justice, and other aspects of American life.In the 1980s, seeking to unify a fragile coalition, the Republican Party popularized the idea that Roe was a symbol of judicial tyranny, discouraging anyone from relying on the decision to frame their demands. But Beyond Abortion illuminates the untapped potential of arguments that still resonate today. By recovering the diversity of responses to Roe, and the legal and cultural battles it energized, Ziegler challenges readers to come to terms with the uncomfortable fact that privacy belongs to no party or cause.

Modern constitutionalism has put a lot of hopes in parliaments but there is some consensus that these hopes have not been entirely fulfilled. At the same time, the role of parliaments in contemporary democracies continues to evolve as parliaments are faced with new challenges. How should they react to the new forms of executive and administrative action? Should they play a role in upholding judicial independence, although the latter is frequently seen as independence from parliament as well as the executive? How should they contribute to the protection of fundamental rights? The book aims at providing some answers to these questions by first setting the historic scene, giving a comparative overview of the modern history of a selection of major European deliberative institutions (UK, France, Germany and the European Parliament). The book then looks at themes around the doctrine of separation of powers, especially aspects of the relationship between parliament and the executive power and parliaments' role and attitude regarding the judiciary with a special focus on the independence of the judiciary in a comparative perspective.

In spite of all emphasis on objectivity, a scientific discipline needs for its development outstanding research workers with exceptional personal qualities. A scientist with these qualities is honoured here, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, by his pupils, friends and colleagues: Arthur Linder is respected as a researcher, advisor and teacher in the field of Applied Statistics. Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. A. Linder has demonstrated the utility of statistical methods in science and technology; these are recognised today as being essen- tial for an objective evaluation of data. His contacts with Sir R. A. Fisher, C. 1. Bliss, G. M. Cox, W. G. Cochran, P. C. Mahalanobis and many other ex- perts, have helped him to achieve his almost legendary authority on sampling and on the evaluation of statistical data.Linder has won many friends and adherents to the cause of Biometry, Econometry and Technometry, firstly through his teaching activity at the universities of Berne, Geneva and Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and as visiting lecturer at the Indian Statistical Institute, the International Statistical Education Centre in Calcutta, the Uni- versity of North Carolina and the University of Natal in Durban, secondly through his contributions to the literature as author of the monographs 'Sta- tistische Methoden' and 'Planen und Auswerten von Versuchen', as editor of METRIKA and co-editor of other journals, and thirdly through his active collaboration in the founding of The Biometric Society, to the presidency of

Das vorliegende Werk ist der erste Band einer dreibändigen Serie, die als Neuauflage des Buchs »Ziegler's Vorlesungen über Mechanik« konzipiert wird. Dieser erste Band behandelt nach einem einführenden Kapitel über Grundlagen (Kinematik, Kräfte, Leistung) die Statik, der zweite Band wird der Festigkeitslehre und der dritte der Dynamik gewidmet. Die Dreiteilung entspricht auch dem stoIDichen Inhalt einer dreisemestrigen Vorlesungsreihe, die Prof. ehr. Wehrli und ich, seit dem Rücktritt unseres verehrten Lehrers und geschätzten Freundes Professor Dr. Hans Ziegler, an den Abteilungen für Bau-und Maschineningenieurwesen abhalten. Obwohl der größte Teil des vorliegenden Bandes neu redigiert wurde, geht er im Geist und Grundkonzept von der früheren Auflage aus. Insbesondere wer­ den auch hier die Grundbegriffe der Statik wie Gleichgewicht, Resultierende, Moment einer Kräftegruppe usw. aus der Leistung der Kräftegruppe am er­ starrten und virtuell bewegten materiellen System hergeleitet. Die damit er­ reichte Betonung des Prinzips der virtuellen Leistungen in der Statik ent­ spricht nicht nur der klassischen Lagrangeschen Auffassung, sondern auch je­ ner der modernen Berechnungsmethoden wie die Methode der finiten Ele­ mente, welche entweder das oben erwähnte Prinzip direkt anwenden oder Energiesätze verwenden, die daraus hergeleitet sind.
