We live in era of computers (unfortunately!) and we are simply forced to use them often and widely. Chess is no exclusion – it is impossible even to imagine modern chess without computers, engines, databases, online platforms, etc. Modern generations have their first connection with chess through computers, not books, and that is wrong of course! Young players prefer to memorize than to understand; they follow some fashionable line even if they do not know what is going on! That motivated me to write this book – logic must be included in the process of chess education! Moreover, logic must be the most important part of that education process. Youngsters often neglect logic and not surprisingly they get surprised when their “well-remembered” variation doesn’t work.Experienced players often lead the game out of theory, to places where understanding will prevail over memory and energy. That is my favorite concept against youngsters –setting static situations on the board – because young players usually go for dynamics, because they are good at calculating and memorizing. Understanding and logic are everything you need with statics on the board.

Endgames with bishops versus knights are one of the most frequently occurring in chess. In his first volume international master and trainer Boroljub Zlatanovic, highlighted in his usual methodological way the concepts that can be mastered with a little effort. The book shows the key elements and different themes. By identifying mistakes made by even the best players, the author indicates the need for correct endgame technique with the light pieces. After practicing his conclusions, you soon will discover you are becoming a far more effective endgame player. This is Boroljub’s second book, after the highly acclaimed ‘Fundamental Chess Strategy in 100 Games’.

In his new endgame series, Boroljub Zlatanovic shows a profound understanding ofthe most common material imbalance in chess: that of the bishop against theknight. The didactic concept of the book is admirable as well as the detailed explanations of the typical characteristics of this endgame. Despite the importance ofthis subject, it has received very little detailed coverage in chess literature and thisencyclopedic work will definitely fill this gap and offer a lot of useful tips for practical play.Grandmaster Alexander DelchevMarch 2021

How to learn strategy? Can it belearned? It can be, of course. And these volumes are the perfect guide to learn(or, more precisely, to learn to understand) strategy. Our idea is to throw light on all the strategicconcepts in these volumes. To help you navigate more simply, we have divided allthe material into two volumes. This first one is exploring the elements ofstrategy, explaining typical and essential principles in detail. The second oneis about pawn structures. Of course, structures themselves actually mean nothing without recognizing patterns and principlesfrom the elements (because pawn structures are used to determine the values ofpieces, for instance). That is why volume two can be considered as an advancedlevel of strategy. Generally, examples will be based on material adopted fromvolume one and upgraded. Volume one is divided into ninechapters and the titles suggest the topic explained in detail. Examples are arrangedfrom less to more complex and I recommend that the reader not skip examplesinside the chapters. Moreover, I would ask the reader to go through thechapters in the order in which they are presented in the book, because the mostimportant topics come first. For instance, centralization is the leadingprinciple and it must be kept in mind while working on other topics!

Volume 2 is divided into eight chapters. Unlike Volume 1, it is possibleto mix the order in which you study these chapters , but not to study the gameswithin each chapter out of order, since the examples build upon each other incomplexity. I suggest that the chapter on “Passed Pawns” should be studiedfirst, because many of the various middlegame structures can ultimately giverise to a passed pawn in the endgame. Work carefully through these examples, because masters use pawn structures even in the opening to predict the propertiesof endgames which can potentially arise – this is a widely neglected aspect andcan be a strong weapon for you!

For almost two centuries the French Defense has been a universally popular opening. Manyauthorities have made their contribution to establishing the theory. Thanks totheir efforts, players nowadays can easily make a choice between the many and variousoptions, whether peaceful or sharp, whether statically or dynamicallyorientated. Just as importantly, if not more so, fans of the French worldwidecan today find good options to play both for a win and a draw! All this makesthe French Defense very popular. However, the authors think that many lineshave not been well explained or should be revisited. Some other lines deserve a better reputation. Finally we have also suggested some new approaches. Simply speaking, the French Defense looks to be inexhaustible and there cannot be enough booksdedicated to it. This book takes a step in the direction of revitalizing our favorite opening! The authors have decided to set the book in order from the less to the more popular and complex lines. In the case of the most popular moves 3. e5, 3. Nd2 and3. Nc3, wedecided to offer two options for Black – one aims to lead to calm play, takingcare first with finding balance and equalizing; the other aims to lead to a direct game. Needless to say, we wish to arm the reader in all scenarios that can arise in a practical game of chess, depending on their intentions, wishes, preparation, motivation level, andstandings etc.

This book would bring something new into your chess library. In computer era focus is usually on openings. Watching broadcasts new generations rather choose games with favorite opening played seeking for some interesting idea or even brilliant novelty. I offer and recommend different concept, based on famous Soviet chess school. Focus should be on understanding strategy concepts, principles and inner logic. Fashionable opening lines will be forgotten (or re-evaluated) sooner or later, but understanding cannot be lost and can be only upgraded. It is sad to see some player well equipped with opening lines, unable to realize big positional advantage in deep endgame. So, our advice is to learn about Strategy and Logic. The book is highly recommended for club players, advanced players and masters, although even higher rated players can find a lot of useful things for themselves. There is no doubt lower rated players will learn a lot about thinking process and making decisions, while some logical principles can be good advice for strong players also.
