Agriculture and forestry have often been treated as separate and distinct disciplines in colleges, universities and handbooks on farm management. However, on the ground, most farmers manage land that combines agricultural production with trees. The increased uptake of agroforestry in the UK can benefit productivity, soils, climate change mitigation, water management, biodiversity and landscape, as well as animal welfare. This handbook introduces the theory of agroforestry and looks at practical management and design considerations. The authors are leading researchers and practitioners with decades of experience in agroforestry from the UK and around the world. This book will help you to assess the potential for agroforestry for your farm or client and understand the possible benefits to the wider environment, for instance by sequestering carbon and reducing flood risk. This second edition has a new Farm Woodland chapter, additional detail on funding strategies for agroforestry and an increased focus on climate resilience. We hope this handbook will give farmers and advisors the confidence and inspiration to start planting and successfully manage their woody on-farm assets for a profitable and resilient future.

Foals imprint on their mothers and are guided by instinct. But over time they get accustomed to humans and can be reared to become trusting, faithful playmates and companions. Therefore, establishing good behaviour at the outset is fundamental to creating a well-adjusted adult horse. The authors, using their extensive experience and personal stories, explain how to balance natural behaviour with training methods to develop a well-behaved horse. The approach is knowledgeable and patient and is based on mutual respect between horse and rider. Key exercises are explained in the text by a great variety of photos, and can also be used with older horses. Practical topics covered include vaccination, hoofcare, herd behaviour, feeding and housing. The reader is guided through the health, well-being, training, education and attitude of the first three years of a horse’s life, with a focus on building trust throughout.Foals and Young Horses is a good companion guide for horse owners, riders and especially breeders. It will also be of interest to equine science students and para-professionals.

Non-Invasive Ventilation involves the use of a mask to assist breathing for patients who can’t breathe for themselves, providing an alternative to invasive ventilation, which involves the insertion of a tracheal tube into the throat of an unconscious patient. It can be used for many problems involving breathing difficulties such as lung disease and sleep apnoea. This book provides a clear practical guide to medical practitioners on how to make use of NIV under various conditions. The approach is very applied and easy to understand. New additions for this second edition include chapters on cough assist devices and non-invasive ventilation at home, and an expansion of the chapters on long-term ventilation and physiotherapy.

For animal breeders colour coat genetics is one of the fundamental elements of breeding, along with health and conformation. Breeders need to know about colour coats for showing purposes and where the fibre is used in industry, for example sheep and alpaca wool. The science behind breeding for genetic traits is complex because of dominant and recessive traits. Because animals inherit two alleles for the base coat colour, it is possible that their phenotype, or visual appearance, does not reflect their underlying genotype. This book is a practical guide for breeders on the biology behind colour coats in large animals directing breeders on how to implement breeding strategies to achieve desired results.

Breeds are fascinating entities. They depend on individual breeders for their continuing existence. Although breeders may come and go, each of them is important and has the potential to make positive contributions to the breed.Multiple factors can guarantee breeders long-term successful management. These include biological aspects, consistent market demand, and the important and sometimes politically charged role of breed associations as the main advocates for breeds today.Strategies for success have been detailed in the first and second editions of Managing Breeds for a Secure Future. The third edition explores this further, providing more strategies that can assure long-term survival for breeds of livestock, poultry, and dogs.Managing Breeds for a Secure Future Third Edition is re-organized to flow better, and has additional chapters on specific protocols for maintaining breeds. It also delves more deeply into rescuing rare populations, through both theory and practice. Updates to the new edition include: biological issues, population analysis, pedigree-based analyses, managing a genetic defect, and specific rescue principles and practices.

Laser therapy has become increasingly popular in small animal practice and has many benefits to the patient – including reduced inflammation, faster tissue healing and less pain, and can be used in a wide variety of conditions including wounds, sprains and fractures.Aimed at the first opinion vet, this very practical book covers the most important aspects of laser use in the practice environment. But it does so in a slightly different approach, taking two (often mis-aligned) perspectives – fundamental science and clinical applications – and combining them for a robust, useful guide to the practice of laser therapy. It includes: how lasers work on tissue, how to use them in different scenarios, how to maximise results, how to use them on different conditions including soft tissue, musculoskeletal and neurological, how to integrate lasers with other therapies, when not to use lasers or use with caution, how to choose the equipment and implement it in the practice environment and promote the treatment to clients. The book also includes case studies to illustrate the use of lasers in practice on a range of conditions in different animals including dogs, cats and exotics.Veterinary Laser Therapy in Small Animal Practice combines the clinical and scientific approaches reflected in the work of the two authors, showing how both sides together can help you have a positive impact on the patient.

Intended for people who work with horses and for owners who want to learn more, Equine Behaviour in Mind provides ideas for practical ways that changes can be incorporated into daily interactions with horses. This book advocates a mindful approach to working with horses, encouraging the reader to think in a horse-centric way. Academic behavioural research is used to underpin understanding of horse behaviour and changes that can be made to positively improve horses' lives. The aim is to provide both the theory behind behaviour-minded horse management and the practical application to enable impactful changes to be made. Real world examples and case studies are provided to highlight these points. Horse behaviour is discussed in a range of contexts, including breeding, training and competing. A behaviourally minded approach to teaching riding, to medical and dental check-ups, to rehabilitation and rescue, and to driving change for horse welfare in both developed and developing countries is also covered. Equine Behaviour in Mind will enable readers to think critically in an objective way about how they manage and work with their horses.

Animal Welfare has been a subject of intellectual and academic study for a long time. In the past philosophers, thought-leaders and scientists have contributed to the debate, and seismic changes such as the advent of post-war industrial farming have brought about changes in attitudes to the way animals are farmed. Animal welfare as a science and philosophy can be understood as a trajectory through history of our understanding of our relationship with animals, enhanced in recent years through studies into animal behaviour and cognition and societal changes in the way we view animals.Animal Welfare Science, Husbandry and Ethics charts the history of our understanding of farm animal welfare, throughout time‚ the human use of animals in different eras, and farming in different systems‚ seeing the emergence of intensification and science and technology. The book examines the human-non-human animal relationship with a philosophical approach, examining the connections and disconnections between animals and people, and charts the beliefs and motives of different philosophers, theories and movements in animal welfare from early history to the present. The book also looks at our current animal welfare systems, examining what is working and what is not, the pathway to how we got here, and looks at future considerations for animal welfare putting forward the author's thoughts on achieving a sustainable animal welfare model.Intended for animal welfare students, teachers, researchers and academic libraries, Animal Welfare Science, Husbandry and Ethics introduces a complex subject requiring an understanding of the underlying factors and drivers of human behaviour and farming systems. Only by acknowledging the complexity, and understanding the factors contributing to that complexity, can we hope to develop an equitable and sustainable animal welfare for the future.

At the end of the book is a resource-bank of additional exercises relating to each type of document.

Isolated regions of the world are often at the forefront of emerging diseases and, to be effective in disease prevention and control, they require basic resources for field sample collection and testing in conditions vastly different from those available in well-equipped reference laboratories. Technical support for field extension staff, and the availability of reliable diagnostic testing facilities, are also vital to ensure sustainable livelihoods for subsistence farmers. This technical handbook aims to provide an easy to follow overview of the basic laboratory techniques, and sample collection guidelines, that we consider useful for staff working in district veterinary facilities in regions that lack the infrastructural support available for staff with ready access to national veterinary laboratories. The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual 3rd Edition provides the reader with a summary of basic diagnostic procedures and sample submission guidelines and also advocates for improved communication between animal health extension staff, veterinarians, laboratory staff and farmers. Case studies are used to illustrate key concepts.Basic laboratory disciplines are covered including parasitology, microbiology, haematology, serology / immunology and pathology. There are also sections on laboratory infrastructure and equipment. There is additional content on common clinical presentations, One Health approaches to Antimicrobial resistance, the role of the OIE, disease surveillance and wildlife disease monitoring. Supplementary tools for use in the field and laboratory are also available online. This new edition of The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual is updated to include content on pen side tests, selection and integration of new technologies, engagement with international agencies and programs, and the One Health approach to disease monitoring.Animal Health extension staff in isolated regions of the world, and NGOs, can benefit from this book as well as policy makers supporting veterinary work in rural areas and veterinary para-professionals involved in One Health work.

Everyone has a view about animal ethics. Each of us, for example, has an opinion about whether we should eat meat; whether animals should be used for scientific research, or whether the use of animals in sport is acceptable. But very few of us stop to wonder about the basis of our views, or to rationalise them. In this book, Madeleine Campbell aims to enable us to do so, by addressing a series of questions such as: When does animal use become abuse? Why do we treat some animals differently from others? Are there some things which we should never do to animals? And, just because we can, should we? Drawing on her experience as a Veterinarian; a European Diplomate in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law; a researcher and teacher, and a member of various industry ethical review bodies and of welfare and ethics committees for membership organisations and government, the author takes ethical argument beyond academia and applies it to the question which currently dominates societal debate about human-animal interactions: what (if anything) is a reasonable use of an animal?Animals, Ethics, and Us offers a stripped back, balanced and moderate perspective, based on logical argument, philosophical principles and sound science. It is a thought-provoking read aimed at a broad readership including informed owners and animal enthusiasts, as well as useful a primer for students of animal ethics, welfare and veterinary medicine.

From a young age many children express an interest in becoming a vet. However, the classic representation of the profession no longer fits with the realities of a modern veterinary career. Children in the 8–12 age group are encouraged to think about career options through dedicated syllabus programmes at Key Stages 2 and 3 and GCSE choices later on, but there is no veterinary career book for this age group. To Vet School and Beyond is written in an easy-to-read format, enabling the book to be a point of reference right through from pre-GSCE to A level. Bold and interactive, with plenty of illustrations and sub-sections, the book is a fresh and modern perspective on the veterinary career. For children who are curious about the veterinary world. This fun and approachable book introduces, through profiles of real vets, the different sectors beyond the familiar small animal/family vet practice in which veterinarians can work, such as research, fish veterinary, zoo medicine and charity work. It also provides some guidance in how to study to get into veterinary school.

This reference book covers using digital radiology and medical imaging procedures such as ultrasound, MRI and scintigraphy in veterinary practice. The approach is a step-by-step guide, with tips and techniques to ensure optimal X-rays and advice on how to improve radiation protection. All commonly kept pets are included: small mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.Translated from the German edition, Diagnostic Radiology in Small Animal Practice 2nd Edition is an extraordinary resource for veterinary students and veterinary school libraries.

Good communication skills provide better clinical outcomes and help avoid minor as well as major mistakes. Approximately 60-80% of negligence claims against vets are related to poor communication, with new graduates especially vulnerable. Communication skills are a growing part of the curriculum in veterinary schools, recognising how fundamental clear communication is to good practice.A Guide to Oral Communication in Veterinary Medicine covers why communication skills are important, the structure of typical communications and suggested approaches, veterinary specific communication pathways and sample scripts between vet and client. Scenarios covered include everyday communication, dealing with challenging situations, different species, different settings, and communication within the veterinary team. The aim is to instil confidence and competence, build professionalism and avoid problems. Most current teaching is based on a toolbox approach developed from the human medicine model. However, there is no set standard for teaching methodology which is why this is primarily a book for students but also includes a section for educators to provide guidance in this nascent subject.
