When Stanley Kubrick was working on the development of his classic movie, '2001: A Space Odyssey', he arranged that 21 of the leading scientists in the world, speculating on life in the universe and the impact its discovery would have on us, would be interviewed on film. Kubrick originally intended to use parts of these interviews in 2001, but discarded the idea. It was suggested that the interviews could be issued as part of a DVD set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of '2001'. The film could not be found but four binders containing the typed transcripts of the interviews were discovered and these form the basis for this remarkable book. The whole collection represents a brilliant overview of scientific, philosophical and ethical considerations of the implications of the possibility of other forms of life within the universe.

This outstanding and greatly neglected novel of the war, revolution, civil war and early Bolshevik rule first appeared in English in 1930 under the title Quiet Street. At the story's centre is a family, Grandfather (an ornithologist), grandmother and grandchild living in a corner house in Sivtsey Vrazhek and it is through their experiences and those of their circle that we glimpse the surrounding momentous events. It was not the author's intention to fashion an abstract historical sweep but rather to focus on the experiences of individuals (and even some of those from the animal kingdom). For Osorgin, nature is a more powerful force in life than the solipsistic beliefs of humankind. At the heart of 'A Corner House in Moscow' is the portrait of the coming-of-age granddaughter, Tanyusha, and her development as an individual in spite of the surrounding chaos. Indeed, a host of memorable characters grace the novel including Stolnikov, the young university graduate who volunteers in 1914, becomes an officer and wins the St George Cross but ultimately loses both his arms and legs to an artillery shell. In the hospital he became known as 'the trunk'. 'The doctors said: "A miracle. Just look at him. There's nature for you."' Written in very short chapters, the wealth of the novel is in the vignettes of individuals and incidences. Cumulatively, they combine to affirm life over death and individuals over ideology.

As circumstantial evidence piles against him, soon there is little help for Deed either from friends or colleagues. In 'The Making of an Alter Ego', Augustus Young shines new light on Rilke’s famously perplexing autofiction, 'The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigg', chronicling his own attempts to uncover the story within the story. 'The Notebooks. . .'  has puzzled readers ever since it was penned a century ago. It is about a young poet in the throes of an artistic crisis indirectly drawn from Rilke’s personal and intellectual life. It offers fertile ground for Young’s audacious and indeed virtuosic detective work in unravelling subplots in its composition. Young takes the reader on a journey of discovery into one of literary history’s most singular creative minds. Through an exploration of Rilke’s many correspondences, his relationships with his contemporaries, we are given fresh insight into the man and his most baffling and alluring work. By reordering the elliptical novel’s structure, and through transcriptions of key passages, the reader arrives at Rilke’s creation of an alternative self. This is volume two of 'Things That Happen When Reading Rilke' and follows volume one – 'The Making of a Pure Poet'.
