Since the fall of communism in 1989, cross-border co-operation between neighbouring states has become a feature of the 'common European home' project. A prominent exception to this trend is Macedonia which today is still subjected to blockade politics and the absence of respect and recognition for Macedonian language, nationality and ethnicity. As a part of Europe under the control of the Ottomans until 1912, Macedonia was less captured by the allure of national romanticism than other areas of Europe, and an embryonic notion of multi-national statehood appeared there. This notion was based on local and regional practices that encompassed groups with different linguistic, cultural and religious heritages rather than being based exclusively on ethnic or religious affiliations. Such a conception of 'nation' ­ which could perhaps provide an aspirational model for many post-industrial, multi-cultural societies in Western Europe in the 21st century ­ was suppressed by the 19th-century nationalism that still characterises much of European politics. This multi-disciplinary book of 15 papers features contributions from historians, political analysts, social theorists, linguists, educationalists and legal specialists tracing the consequences of the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and the partition of Macedonia on the social, cultural and linguistic landscape of this region.

Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in der Untersuchung der Sprache der Altgläubigen in ihren Versammlungsprotokollen und -beschlüssen, die dafür zu einem umfangreichen diachronen Korpus zusammengetragen wurden.

The volume at hand collects the papers given at a conference at Salzburg University in October 2013 on the topic of Soviet fashion from the Thaw until the beginning of the Perestroika. Divided into the three sections "Socialist Fashion", "Fashion and Society", and "Fashion and the Arts" the contributions cover a wide range of different aspects, such as the history of fashion, the culture of consumption, aspects of economy, and vestimental codes in film and literature. At the centre of this volume thus lies the everyday culture with its implicit gender structures, and issues of transfer, in particular of Western fashion. Focusing on material culture thus the potential of fashion and fashion practices to transform the norms of Soviet society come to the fore.

Das Oberschlesisch-Polnische ist von Beginn der wissenschaftlichen Beschreibung an einer immensen Politisierung ausgesetzt. War es zunächst eine deutsch-polnische Konkurrenz um Deutungshoheit, die insbesondere den Sprachkontakt zum Ausgangspunkt für divergierende Klassifikationsversuche genommen hat, so liegt heute eine binnenpolitische Konfliktlage vor. Oberschlesische Aktivisten hinterfragen die traditionelle Dartstellungsweise der polnischen Dialektologie und sprechen nicht mehr von einem "urpolnischen" Dialekt, sondern fordern die Anerkennung ihres Idioms als Regionalsprache. Die dabei sowohl von Befürwortern als auch Gegnern der Nobilitierung des Oberschlesisch-Polnischen bemühten Argumentationsstrategien werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit aus einer sozilinguistischen Perspektive analysiert und im Kontext der Politisierung des Idioms der Oberschlesier interpretiert.

Die Grenzregion zwischen den heutigen Nationalstaaten Österreich, Ungarn und der Slowakei ist seit jeher eine mehrsprachig geprägte Umgebung und Siedlungsgebiet der burgenländischen Kroaten, die heute eine anerkannte Sprachminderheit in allen drei genannten Ländern sind. Das Narrativ eines Jahrhunderte langen gemeinsam gepflegten Geschichts- und Sprachbewusstseins, das Staatsgrenzen trotzt - dieser heute oft präsentierte, lineare identitäre Entwurf für die Burgenländischen Kroaten ist Gegenstand dieser Analyse. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, mit der klassischen Sprachminderheitenforschung zu brechen und vor dem Parameter der räumlichen Grenzziehungsprozesse im behandelten Raum unterschiedliche Identifikationsdynamiken und -angebote herauszuarbeiten. Hauptaugenmerk liegt dabei neben den historischen, kulturanthropologischen und ethnologischen Betrachtungen auf der eigenständigen Sprachkodifizierung.
