This book presents the early stages of about hundred common fishes in a standardised, illustrative layout, affording effective guidance to the investigation and identification of these stages. Emphasis is put on the illustration by clear figures and on the precision of main diagnostic characters. Each species is presented in a standard two-paged format with description of development and corresponding figures of five characteristic stages; and with additional paragraphs which describe the adult characters and biology and specify the distinct characters of the larva. The series of identification sheets is introduced by a set of short, reviewing chapters, emphasising the research history and methods, and the early stage morphology and ecology. Due to their great importance in the plankton ecosystem and in fish stock replenishment, the fish eggs and larvae attract interest from a wide range of researchers. This book will be a valuable tool to the scientist and technician who need to make correct identification of collected fish larvae, and want additional information on the early development of the species.

Group-projects in a Problem-oriented Setting is a general introduction to the process in which students are involved when they work with problem-oriented projects in groups. It is also an introduction to the products which must be generated and developed throughout the project. How does one get from the initial idea phase to the formulation of the problem and the aim of the project, and onwards to implementation? How can one initiate and strengthen the writing process? How can the group strengthen their collaboration, and how might they handle conflicts? How should a literature search be conducted, how do you make correct references and how can the sources be managed critically? What is important in communication both written and oral, including giving a good presentation? And finally, how do we ensure optimal and sustained learning from the process? The book offers numerous suggestions and answers to these questions. One of the aims of the book is to illustrate and emphasize the differences and connections between process and product, which in turn strengthens the planning, development and implementation of project work. The mix of qualified advice and general guidelines in addition to highlighting the more formal academic requirements makes Group-projects in a Problem-oriented Setting a useful handbook. It can function as both a source of inspiration as well as a tool for students who are either starting a project or who are already experiencing difficulties. The book's target group is students in both bachelor and master programmes. While the examples in the book are taken from natural and life sciences, it can still be useful for students in other fields.

R is a statistical computer program used and developed by statisticians around the world. It is probably the leading statistical program, at least among statisticians, and it is freely available. This book is intended for the newcomer who wants to do statistical analysis with R and needs a guide to get started. The book focuses on statistical data problems that are often encountered within the biosceinces. It puts special emphasis on linear models and analysis of repeated measurements data, but also deals with binary data and survival data, among others. Problems are presented and solutions -- along with the corresponding OR code and output -- are provided. The guide is divided into two parts: the first part on R basics and the second part on the statistical analyses using R. Various datasets are used for illustration and they are all available in the R package Guide1data.
