Breakdown Press is honoured to publish I Want To Be Stupid, a further dip into the wild world of Ebisu Yoshikazu's daring and confrontational short comics, following the much-lauded 2019 publication of his earlier book The Pits of Hell. Originally published in 1982, I Wish I Was Stupid builds on and surpasses in shamelessness the artist's cult classic Pits of Hell. Newly translated by Ryan Holmberg, the book consists of 13 explosive stories about love, family, work, and raging frustration at the indignities of everyday life, all informed by influences as disparate as avant-garde pornography, the language of news bulletins and art films, and classic alternative manga anthology Garo. Ebisu probes dangerously deep into the inner mucosal of the human condition, unafraid to wade through the slime. If you've ever considered setting your child on fire, pooping with double buttholes, or windmilling your dingdong, finally, this is the book that you have been waiting for!

Breakdown Press are excited to bring Anna Haifisch's THE ARTIST back to print in a new omnibus edition, collecting both the original 2016 graphic novel and it's 2019 follow-up, The Circle of Life, along with additional strips including the brand new Bird Opera. Now readers can experience the whole story in one hilarious and heart-wrenching volume, exposing the absurdity of the fine art world as experienced by a young artist. Anna Haifisch's idiosyncratic, episodic comic chronicles the formative years of a young artist, satirising the exclusive, ephemeral and absurd world of fine art with all of its arcane protocols and quirks. Plagued by doubts and anxiety, the artist confronts constant setbacks and tantalisingly occasional glimpses of success. Based on Haifisch's own experiences as an illustrator in both Germany and the USA, The Artist is a sharp and self-deprecating comedy that will resonate with anyone who has ever tried to make art. In THE ARTIST, Haifisch has exposed the very nerves of what it means to be an artist in a world of ever shifting rules and complications, to hilarious and insightful ends.

Bold, absurd and all too real, Ebisu Yoshikazu's work feels distinctly underground, almost punk. Frequently dealing in sci-fi, erotica and the intersection between the two genres, Lala's comics are often an expression of her 'corporeal ambivalence', feeling at odds with her body. Indeed, her characters seem liquid and often lack solidity of line, endlessly morphing into new shapes and blurring into the landscapes in which they exist. The way we show ourselves to the world and the masks we wear are recurring themes in Lala's work. Depicting vulnerability, touch and tender moments of contact between characters injects a sense of realism to Lala's otherworldly imagery.
