Social trust is the key to, indeed the very success formula for, well-functioning and harmonious societies like the Norwegian one, both researchers and politicians claim. But can there be too much trust in a society? Can trust make us dull and naive? Does Norwegians' great, almost boundless trust in authorities and state institutions leave the way open for corruption, abuse of power and national security threats - and for us Norwegians to a large extent tolerating incompetence? Yes, claim Nina Witoszek and Eva Joly, who in this book deal with what they call Norwegian trust pathologies. The authors show how the Norwegian trust has backfired on us, and has been abused by, among others, Norwegian peace brokers, tax lawyers, business leaders, politicians and the state oil company Equinor. They recognize that trust is an important social good. But it must be accompanied by common sense.

We spend much of our waking time working, but sadly, most people are disappointed with what they do. In this book Nicholas Ind asks why we get bored and frustrated with our jobs and then suggests the attitudes and behaviour we should adopt to find fulfilment. Drawing on ideas from philosophy and business practice and illustrated with references to films, art and literature, Ind shows that people can find meaning if they engage with their jobs, challenge themselves to be open to the ideas of others and take an active part in shaping their organisations. Using interviews with artists, academics, film and theatre directors, entrepreneurs and business managers as inspiration, Ind demonstrates how we can realise our potential as individuals and make the organisations of which we are part, more successful. Whether you are a leader of an organisation, an employee, a student or about to start work, this book provides a rich source of ideas.

What does it take to find oil in an area where many have tried, but failed? What does it take to design buildings that become prize-winning cultural landmarks? And what can the best architects, oil explorers, business lawyers, journalists, and business developers within banking and trading analysis have in common? Idea Work can provide the answers. This book builds on a four-year research project and describes what extraordinary idea work looks like in practice. The authors take you behind the scenes of some of Norway's leading companies and show how surprisingly similarly they work when they are working creatively to develop and realise new ideas. The book gives us, for example, a glimpse of how Snøhetta designed the Opera and the 9/11 memorial, and how explorers at Statoil discovered the most oil of all oil companies in the world in 2011. Narratives are presented on how prepping, sketches, pin-ups, drama, wonder, and punk are important aspects of the extraordinary. Examples are supported by theory, placing this book at the forefront of international research. Idea Work will appeal to practitioners as well as students. It recounts engaging stories from actual production processes and combines new theoretical perspectives with practical advice. It will also be of interest to anyone working with development, particularly with developing new ideas. From a professional standpoint, this book is an uncommon contribution to describing and understanding creativity as something collective and grounded in everyday activity.

Following the neoliberal turn in the 1980s, leading global companies have established an influential trend in business through adoption of the doctrine of corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSR). This book critically explores the new megatrend and its varying interpretations and presents overviews of several fields of CSR practice: governance, business ethics, SRI/ESG investment, communication, reporting, labour relations/HR, supply chain management, life cycle analysis, climate strategy, innovation, leadership and public policy. The book also presents visions of CSR development going forward. While the book contributes to the international research frontier, it also reflects its Nordic context, both with respect to authorship and empirical focus. Chapters on leading companies and on state CSR initiatives illustrate how the Nordic tradition has fostered pioneering CSR positions both in business and public policy. In the final chapter the book engages in the broader international debate on CSR, democracy, and value creation, with leading international critical thinkers in dialogue with industrial strategists.

For over fifty years, between around 1870 and 1914, there was a thriving trade that saw translucent block ice exported to Great Britain from the fjords and lakes of Norway. By 1899, the volume of ice landed in Britain had reached over half a million tons, with the port of London often accounting for 40-50 per cent of that total. The ice was needed for food preservation as Britain's increasingly urban and industrial population grew exponentially over the later nineteenth century and, over time, to satisfy Britons' taste for iced drinks and ice cream. For Norway, the trade yielded economic benefits across coastal communities of the south and south-east. In effect, ice production was a form of agriculture that gave rise to a regular labour force, multiple ice stores, and ingenious wooden chutes for moving ice blocks down to loading wharves. Ice Blocks from Norway: The Importation of Natural Ice to Britain, Circa 1870-1925 is a richly illustrated, definitive account of the history of this unique trade. The book will appeal to general, informed readers as well as academic specialists.
