Full Title - Narrative of a Ten Years Residence at Tripoli in Africa - From the Original Correspondence in the Possession of the Family of the Late Richard Tully, Esq.
Nothing can be more curious than the appearance of the caravans when they set out, as they are by that time composed of crowds from all nations, as different in their dress as in their complexions. They carry with them besides gold dust, Venetian sequins, silver piastres, corn, wheat, beans, iron, lead and cochineal, and return through Tripoli with muslins, ostrich feathers, shawls, Arabian coffee, pearls, diamonds from Golconda...
This extract illustrates the wealth of fascinating detail to be found in this handsome volume. First published in 1817, it contains correspondence from Miss Tully whose brother-in-law was British Consul in Tripoli from 1783-1793.
These letters, detailing every aspect of life, contain exact descriptions of houses, mosques, palaces, clothing, people and customs. No event has escaped the writer's notice and his account remains as fascinating today as it was to contemporary readers.
This fine facsimile edition retains the beautifully illustrated colour plates of the original.

The 'pilgrimage' alluded to in the title of this work describes a five-month journey undertaken by an Englishwoman, in 1878, to the great central desert region of Arabia. That a woman should venture on such a perilous journey at all was unusual enough in the mid-nineteenth century, and the resulting narrative throws a refreshing and sensitive light on the people and places of those times. Lady Anne Blunt (1837-1917), Arabic scholar, horsewoman, musician, traveller, has left a unique record of her journey. Her narrative contains all the romance of the desert and excels in the portraiture of its inhabitants. Yet also described are the awful hardships she faced in one of the world's harshest environments. Here reproduced in facsimile, the work was originally published in two volumes edited by the author's husband, Wilfred Scawen Blunt. Himself an active supported of Muslim aspirations and of nationalism in Arab countries, he accompanied his wife on her travels. The journal remains a sympathetic and worthy account of their adventures.
This book recounts the exotic journeys of Lady Anne Blunt to Arabia in 1875. Blunt was a talented artist, author of Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates, and the founder of the famous Crabbet Stud of England.

In 1856 Dr Nathan Davis, whose other works include A Voice from North Africa (1844), began his excavation of the site of Carthage, fabled North African city of Dido, 'fugitive princess of Tyre'. During the course of the excavations, which extended to Utica and other sites of historic interest, Dr Davis discovered a number of relics, including some fine fragments of Roman mosaic pavements, which now reside in the British Museum.
Carthage and Her Remains is, however, primarily a travel book rather than a scientific account of an archaeological investigation, and the author is an excellent story-teller. He brings to life the culture and history of the region and the classical legends that surround it, memorably retracing at one point the footsteps of Aeneas from the North African shore to the walls of Carthage. He also entertainingly describes his dealings with the dignitaries of Tunis and with his Arab workmen, admirably succeeding in his avowed aim, which is '... to combine his special object - to dig for relics of the past, with his natural propensity to dig into the minds, and characters, of the modern occupants of the territories of Carthage'.

'Saracen' was a name employed by medieval writers to describe the Muslims of Syria and Palestine, and the Arab rulers of North Africa generally - especially those conquerors of Spain and Sicily, and the invaders of France. Later the name was applied to all those peoples against whom the crusades were preached, and it is with these events that the term 'Saracen is most popularly connected. Saladin, proclaimed sultan in 1174, was the most prominent leader of this period and in many ways he can be said to typify the Saracenic qualities: courage, wisdom, magnanimity. However, the crusader period covered but a small part of Saracen history which, indeed, can be said to extend from pre-Islamic Arabia; Spain itself saw eight centuries of Saracen rule. In 'A Short History of the Saracens', Ameer Ali examines every aspect of these extraordinary people. Few writers, in the decades since this work was first published, in 1899, have presented a more complete account. For this reason, both historians and students of the period will welcome its republication.

"My recollections of the country are ones that I shall always treasure, in spite of the dangers and sickness, in spite of long marches and days in prison, the Yemen will always be for me, Arabic Felix."
First published in 1893, A Journey Through the Yemen appeared at a critical time in the turbulent history of the Yemen. The Turkish Empire had seized much of the country in an attempt to re-establish control over the seaway routes leading to the Suez Canal. Rebellion by the native population against the Turks reached its peak in the late nineteenth century and an important chapter in this work provides a contemporary account of the effects of this conflict.
In contrast, the second part of the work contains a thrilling narrative of the author's travels in the Yemen, and, his adventures there, described together with vivid portraits of the places he visits and the people he meets. The book first appeared, in part, in the widely-read Victorian journal, the Illustrated London News, from which many of the evocative illustrations are also taken.

Washington Irving was the first American man of letters to receive international recognition. He in fact spent almost a third of his life in Europe, including several years in Spain attached to the American Legation. He travelled about that country from 1826-9, working in the libraries of Madrid and Seville, and for a time living in the Alhambra. From these studies Irving compiles a vast store of information concerning the dominance of the Moors in Spain, and also prepared extensive notes dealing with the foundation of the Islamic faith.
Twenty years passed before Irving was able to collate all his writings into a single body of work. The resultant Mahomet and His Successors, published in two volumes in 1849-50, was well received in both America and Europe, providing as it did an excellent introductory study of the life of the Prophet and the founding of Islam.
The work remains of interest to the general reader and will now also attract the student of Islamic historical literature for whom this republished work, in facsimile of the 1868 edition, will be especially welcome.
