Seit der Spätaufklärung und der Krise des Ancien Régime entstanden in Deutschland zahlreiche Konzepte einer "Reform" bzw. "Erneuerung" des Adels, deren Konjunktur bis ins 20. Jahrhundert andauern sollte. Die vorliegende Untersuchung betrachtet solche Adelsreformideen als Bestandteile der Suche nach "Dritten Wegen", die auf einen maßvollen und gesteuerten Wandel der Gesellschaft abzielten. Der verstörende Umsturz des alten Regiments in weiten Teilen Europas und die gleichzeitige militärisch-politische Herausforderung durch das revolutionäre Frankreich gaben um 1800 diesem Paradigma gerade in Preußen einen besonderen Resonanzraum. Die von der preußischen Reformzeit bis in die Restaurationsepoche nach 1848 reichende Untersuchung beginnt mit der vergleichenden und diskursanalytischen Gegenüberstellung der aufgefundenen Adelsreformpläne, setzt die darin geäußerten gesellschaftsstrategischen Ansätze, Geschichtsdeutungen und Zukunftserwartungen aber dann mit den strukturellen Voraussetzungen der stark variierenden preußischen Adelslandschaften in Beziehung: Das Ergebnis ist eine sozialwissenschaftlich informierte Ideengeschichte; Adelsgeschichte wird so zum Spiegel einer Gesellschaftsgeschichte, die konventionelle Vorstellungen einer simplen, linear fortschreitenden Ablösung der alten Gesellschaft durch eine aufkommende Moderne überwindet.
