Alan Glass’s drawings from the 1950s are like swirls of smoke on the verge of assuming solid shape, like rock coming alive and metamorphosing, like plants and animals commingling, their branches and limbs, their eyes and tendrils seeking new paths. Utilising the newly invented ballpoint pen from 1954 to 1962, Glass used this modest instrument to create remarkably intricate and detailed drawings, using variations in pressure and density to conjure forth alternately lush and thick, light and crowded shapes with the appearance of inert matter coming alive. Among the several hundred drawings that Glass produced, there are some in which he used such an abundance of ink that the drawings almost take on the texture of paintings. Here, the flimsy paper is saturated to the degree of appearing soaked in the intense blues that have been a frequently recurring element of Glass’s art for almost 70 years. It was the ballpoint-pen drawings that led to Glass’s first solo exhibition, organised at Galerie Le Terrain Vague by André Breton and Benjamin Péret in January 1958.

The works of art gathered by Spaniards Juan Abello and Anna Gamazon since the 1980s constitute one of the most important private collections in the world. Fascinated by history and art, the couple has built a collection whose marked personality is based on the beauty and quality of its pieces. It is a broad collection, with works created by both Spanish and international artists over a period of five hundred years from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. By concentrating particularly on artists underrepresented in Spain's public and private collections, the Abello family has both pioneered the appreciation of foreign artists and contributed to a notable recovery of their own country's artistic heritage. SELLING POINTS: . A careful selection of more than one hundred works from the Abello Collection: excellent paintings and one sculpture, but also, and very significantly, drawings, including a suite of rare drawings by Pablo Picasso. . The treasures of the Alba family represent more than five hundred years of patronage and collecting of European art of the highest quality and importance The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University is honoured to offer viewers in the United States their first opportunity to contemplate masterpieces from the leading historic private art collection in Spain. The treasures of the Alba family represent more than five hundred years of patronage and collecting of European art of the highest quality and importance. One hundred thirty-eight exemplary objects from these vast holdings will be presented in Dallas and then travel to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville. Coinciding with the Meadows Museum s golden anniversary, the exhibition Treasures from the House of Alba: 500 Years of Art and Collecting and this companion publication trace the history of the Alba family from the fifteenth century through the present day through the works they collected. The book explores the family's wealth of paintings, sculptures, furniture, tapestries, and other objects, as well as the Alba archives and library. The stature of the painting collection is clear from the artists represented in the exhibition, among them Fra Angelico, Titian, Rubens, Mengs, Goya, Ingres, Sorolla, and Renoir. The relationship of the Alba legacy to America is highlighted in decorative objects and in a selection of documents from the Alba library related to Columbus and his voyages. The ten essays in this publication shed light on the dynasty's particular interest in collecting tapestries; its patronage of writers such as Garcilaso de la Vega; the influence of Eugenia de Montijo, empress of France, who was directly related to the Alba family; the pivotal roles of the Seventeenth Duke of Alba and his daughter, the Eighteenth Duchess, in the twentieth century, both of them keenly engaged with the art of their time; and the three palaces Liria, Monterrey, and Las Duenas that house much of the collection today. Finally, there is one essay covering the biographical life of the Albas as well as an article that discusses their artistic legacy. As a result, the book provides an in-depth study of the rich life and cultural achievements of this legendary dynasty that still lives strong today.

These pages tell the story without words of a journey through Spain in which the author, the photographer Fernando Manso, visited unknown and hidden corners and captured them on the plates of his large-format camera. From the remotest parts of Galicia to those of Almería, he passed through coasts, deserts and mountains, stopping at old churches, ghostly castles or majestic cathedrals, in forests and gorges, at natural pools and salt mines, and at cemeteries, Arab baths and hermitages carved out of the rock.Fernando has made the light of these places into the leading figure of his journey. His is a different light, as he has relinquished blue skies and brilliant sunshine, often the stuff of clichés, to make way for visions of places that appear to us with such intimate truth that even if we know them, we can barely recognise them. This is thanks to his technique, his art and the patience with which he waits for the light.Fernando’s luxury is being able to use all the time in the world to draw us into an artistic heritage that is sometimes secret and hard to reach, and which the viewer has to know how to see. He reveals these places, often in danger of disappearing, after detailed investigation. Both architecture and landscape – for he knows that natural scenery is also a major patrimony that has to be affectionately preserved and protected from speculation – belong to all of us, and we are responsible for their care. We must be aware of this. The result of that trip is this publication, with beautiful images in reproductions of exceptional quality that present us with a vision of Spain in a different light.

Maria Campos Carles de Pena, a leading expert in furniture history, has undertaken an exhaustive project of research into the large and varied production of furniture made in Peru in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries - the colonial period - for churches, convents, monasteries and private collections. Over eleven chapters she provides a thorough description of this type of furniture, which was inspired by artistic styles ranging from Mannerism to Neoclassicism, with their many variants and creators. Her analysis allows for an appreciation of the way vice-regal furniture in Peru is a valuable witness to its time: an example of a syncretism of varied and different cultures, endowed with symbolism, iconographic meaning and enormous beauty.

Artists of The Spanish Golden Age such as Murillo, Zurbaran and Velazquez were the key to instigating a truly passionate appreciation of Spanish art among the great collectors at the end of the Modern Age, as well as the public institutions or other institutions that sprang from private initiative after the Industrial Revolution. There are notable sets of works created by Spanish artists in the United Kingdom, from the Osonas to Joan Miro, such as the ones conserved in Apsley House, Pollok House and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The collections owned by public institutions also include a significant number of masterpieces of Spanish art, including the National Gallery of London and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. Other public and private collections, such as the Wallace Collection, the Duke of Stafford Collection, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Bowes Museum, also contain masterpieces.

Chus Burés creates miracles. Each piece of jewelry that emerges from his workshop boasts a complex genesis, stemming from an intersection between his genius-level thought processes and his maverick lifestyle. From exploring the versatility of buttons, to accentuating the geometric planes of the human body (Infinity Lines, 1990), and using minerals to emulate and exaggerate human features (seen in the striking 'Mae Nam' Collection of 2000), Burés' work is always perplexing, always stimulating, and always innovative. He refuses to be cowed by convention, and delights in challenging his clients and models. The bodily focus of his work makes every piece a startling, and often uncomfortable, insight into humanity.Burés may be a maestro of metal - the gauzy chainmail-esque veils in his Crochet collection, 2000, attest to that. Yet he has mastered the emotional dimensions of his jewelry as well as its physical properties. The relationship between his pieces and the people who collect and cherish them is essential to his artistic praxis. In Chus Burés, Portraits & Jewellery (2016), this is realized through a series of intense portraits by Antoine d'Agata, Alberto García-Alix, and Andres Serrano. These pictures reveal a transgressive melding of jewel and subject: man becomes metal and metal becomes man. Watch ideas take on physical form, and immerse yourself in Burés' world of wearable art.Text in English, French, and Spanish.

This monograph reveals the wonderful Spanish artistic heritage conserved in the museums of the United States and its enormous quality and interest, from the Middle Ages until contemporary art The United States is probably the country outside of Spain which has valued Spanish art the most. This claim is based on the sheer number of Spanish works purchased in the recent history of this nation, the high quality of these works and their widespread distribution among most of the museums in the country s leading cities. This fascination with Spanish art is reflected in the specialisation of some of these institutions, as well as in the way these works make up the most important core of some collections or are represented on par with those of other schools in more encyclopaedic museums. This monograph reveals the wonderful Spanish artistic heritage conserved in the museums of the United States and its enormous quality and interest, from the Middle Ages until contemporary art. With essays by the conservators of American museums and experts in Spanish art, this volume evaluates the importance of the works of art from Spain in the different museums and tells the story of how they have been collected in the United States of America. 250 colour

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Art & Fashion in the Calouste Gulbenkian museum, and highlights the inseparable relationship between art and fashion: art finds a constant source of inspiration in fashion, while fashion finds permanence and memory in art. Both disciplines engage in a dialogue around beauty, both ephemeral and eternal, as an invisible thread between past and present. The extraordinary Gulbenkian Collection, with pieces from Ancient Egypt to the 20th century, allows for a unique encounter between masterpieces of painting and decorative arts and iconic haute couture creations. It is not a question of comparison, but of establishing visual and symbolic conversations: contemporary silhouettes alongside Renaissance folds, exquisite embroidery juxtaposed with modernist flashes, ancient iconography reinterpreted. The book captures that moment when the museum is transformed into a living space where art and fashion face each other, reminding us that beauty knows no boundaries, only the passage of time.

In commemoration of the centenary of the birth of the architect Antonio Lamela, his son Carlos Lamela de Vargas, an architect as well, honours with this book the legacy of one of the most important Spanish architects of the 20th C. Antonio Lamela was a visionary, innovative architect. His field of activity ranged from land use, urban planning, and architecture to landscaping, interior decoration, and furniture design, always informed by a holistic, multidisciplinary worldview. One of Antonio Lamela’s greatest contributions to Spanish architecture was the introduction of the “suspended structure” he used for the Colón towers (1967‒1977) in Madrid. These twin towers, built from the top down, hold the world record for the number of floor slabs hung from a single head beam or structural platform by means of prestressed concrete hangers along the perimeter. A tireless traveller and scholar, Antonio’s research into cutting-edge concrete construction systems inspired him to bring some of them to his own country: he established the first ready-mix concrete factories in Spain, and introduced the systems needed to precast special concrete pieces. As a humanist, his interest in the environment, energy, and ecology inspired him to create two intellectual doctrines that would ultimately give rise to two new organising sciences: Cosmoism and Geoism.

"My career as an architect and designer began over seventeen years ago, and it has been a fabulous journey of learning and discovery. Along the way I have found many new friends in the clients who have asked me to create spaces to inhabit, spaces that are filled with wonder, with a sense of timeless luxury, and with grace and charm. My great passion is for materials: the refinement of the very best linens, the finest wood, the most luxurious silks. I retain a team of experienced craftsmen whose skill in working with these materials is assured, while I apply my expertise to every aspect of the project, designing my own bespoke pieces of furniture and selecting other items and accessories from contemporary and classic collections. I hope you enjoy this invitation to view these spaces as much as I enjoyed creating them." - Ricardo BarrosoRicardo Barroso is known for his luxurious residential, commercial and hospitality design projects from around the world involving high-end residences, executive jets, private yachts, restaurants and nightclubs.Ricardo Barroso Interiors gives a personal look into Barroso's artistic ethos with more than 240 colour photographs of his past and present works, inspired from his life experiences and extensive travels.Text in English and Spanish.

Archer M. Huntington (1870-1955), son of one of the wealthiest men in America, decided that his passion for Spain had to be reflected by creating a museum and a library that would make his knowledge of Spanish art and culture available to his compatriots and that is how he founded in 1904 The Hispanic Society of America in New York. A section of more than two hundred of these treasures is being presented at important museums, such as the Museo del Prado (Madrid), el Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), and the Albuquerque, Cincinnati and Houston museums in the United States. This volume gathers the content of this great exhibition including a detailed file of each piece and an introductory essay telling the story of the Hispanic Society's creation and the scope of its collections.

When news of the coronavirus arrived, the lockdown came fast to Italy. The figures were scary and the disaster bigger every day. But it also became a rare opportunity to truly see and share this magical city that I love so much. I photographed its overwhelming beauty, reflected in the liquid mirror of the canals, the glorious vision of architectural perfection, the colours enhanced by the incredible sun and deep blue sky we had every day.At night, walking alone through the narrow streets hearing only the sound of my footsteps in this overwhelming silence, was so mysterious and out of another world. It has been a tremendous privilege to live in the emptiness, free of human beings, with all this beauty around and all to myself. It was the most incredible experience of my life and the images and feelings will stay with me forever, hoping sincerely you will have the impression you have been there with me. - Gaby Wagner Text in English and Italian.

This book is the result of a study carried out over two years by the prominent curator and lecturer Masayo Nonaka, a specialist in the subject of Mexican surrealism.

Fifteen years ago, Eduardo Mencos (farmer, landscape designer and photographer) and Charles Quest-Ritson (historian, writer, journalist and editor) conceived the idea of going on a trip around the world, like Jules Verne, but with the olive tree playing the leading role. The outcome of that adventure through 26 countries is this book, which tells the story of humankind through the olive tree and its fruit. In the book, the authors take an in-depth look at a tree that is so familiar to us all and yet still remains so much of a mystery in terms of its many different guises. With over 200 spectacular photographs taken by Eduardo Mencos, accompanied by an erudite text written by Charles Quest-Ritson, the book sweeps through the manifold manifestations of the olive tree and its distinguishing traits. It covers the origin and later domestication of the tree, all of the different roles it has played and the significance it has had at different times throughout history, its importance in the Bible, right through to the most innovative contemporary methods used today for growing and cloning olive trees, together with the prominent place it holds in the Mediterranean diet and its different uses. The intention of this long journey is to awaken a vision of the olive tree that is imbued with beauty, poetry and curiosity.

*A journey through some of the beautiful projects undertaken by celebrated Spanish interior designer Jaime Parlade This is a generously illustrated, large-format book by the renowned Spanish interior designer Jaime Parlade, who began his career in Marbella with the decoration of the Hotel de Guadalmina in 1958. That project singled him out as one of the principal designers of interiors in the city, where he decorated the houses of numerous families and prominent figures in the social, aristocratic and intellectual circles of Marbella and its coastline. Jaime Parlade has also worked in Corfu, Marrakesh, Miami, Gstaad and Connecticut, among other places. His great talent lies in his ability to mix styles, but what is most striking is the quality of his work and its level of comfort, meaning that all his interiors are attractive and welcoming from the moment we step into them. Jaime Parlade's favorite creations are those for country houses as well as the remodeling projects he has undertaken of residences in Madrid, Ciudad Real and Toledo. Illustrated with images by well-known photographers, this book offers a tour of some of these houses.
