This is a book of 100 poems of great richness and variety. Indeed, it is genuinely a landmark book. It is an important literary and academic event in itself.Professor Lord Asa Briggs is one of the most important historians of Britain. He is world-renowned for his work in social history, culture, and communications. He has also been a national and international leader in education, and in life-long learning. Now in his nineties, he has been writing poetry since he was 13. But this is the first publication of this body of his literary work. The book is an important cultural event. It will take its place amongst Lord Briggs’ other classic works, his five-volume history of the BBC, his trail-blazing The Age of Improvement 1783-1867, and his famous historical trilogy Victorian People, Victorian Cities, and Victorian Things. The author, a vivid writer, also provides a “strictly necessary Introduction” in which he discusses his ideas about poetry and how and why he has written poetry over the years. Asa Briggs has a very strong visual sense and an intuitive sense of place. In his work, too, he has always related literature to history. He is widely known as an effective and entertaining serious broadcaster, and his feeling for language is special. The volume demonstrates Asa Briggs’ taste, intellectual discipline, technique and literary responses to the events and people he has known during his long life, and the challenges in his life. His style is his own, although he acknowledges his interest in the works of other poets including Matthew Arnold, John Betjeman, Robert Frost, Seamus Heaney, and Dylan Thomas. He grew up, in a working-class family, in the West Riding town of Keighley, and at age 16 he won a scholarship to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. In his long career the author was a major influence on the development of new universities in Britain, and of education abroad too. He has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, Master of Worcester College Oxford, and Chancellor of The Open University, of which he was one of the originators. He served as an intelligence officer at Bletchley Park during World War Two. The poems particularly illustrate the significance of locality, of boundaries, of oral history, of the world of labour, and of the importance of language and of class. They also contemplate the particular in terms of the general. And the relationships between public and private events. All of these elements have been an important focus for Asa Briggs and for his democratic approaches. His works, indeed, have implied the case for optimism in social progress. His life and works have greatly delineated and enriched democratic culture, together with his studies of the dynamics of economic and social change. This is a book of 100 poems of great richness and variety. This unusual, witty, satirical, pseudonymous, controversial and very pointed work gathers together the 50 episodes which were originally published on the famous and widely-read nhsManagers.net eletter run by Roy Lilley, which has some 30,000 subscribers here and abroad. Both the author, and Mr. Lilley – who are not one and the same – have been Chairs of NHS Trusts and advisers to government. Mr. Romford dramatizes the current issues and problems of British healthcare – and points out some radical and innovative solutions.

This radical new book offers economic solutions based on direct financial incentives to the individual to care for themselves better, to save and invest in future funding, for a much broader funding base including the greater use of insurance, and to ask government to re-appraise the system urgently.

The second edition of the classic on the history of British horse racing. It provides a detailed and far-ranging social and economic analysis of the major changes in British flat racing, in particular in the period between 1830 and 1939.

The author has been a Prime Ministerial Adviser and has held senior national and local appointments, including being a member of the National Care Standards Commission and Chairman of the Patients’ Association. The critical challenges to the British NHS are the consequences of us all living longer, having to manage chronic conditions over time, expecting and demanding more, and being denied many innovative new drugs (notably, for cancer) which cannot be afforded at present by the too narrowly funded NHS. This needs to be changed, in line with more successful funding systems in Europe, Australia, and the Far East, where outcomes are much better than in the UK. This radical new book offers economic solutions based on direct financial incentives to the individual to care for themselves better, to save and invest in future funding, for a much broader funding base including the greater use of insurance, and to ask government to re-appraise the system urgently. It will be controversial, and will spark lively new debate, as well as serving as a student text for courses concerned with healthcare, and clinical practise. This new book follows Professor Spiers’ several successful previously published commentaries on the NHS and public policy, including Who Decides Who Decides? Enabling choice, equity, access, improved performance and patient guaranteed care, published by Radcliffe Medical Press.

The great historian D.C. Moore's masterpiece, long unavailable. It is an essential fulcrum for all attempts to explain the nature of the 19th century English political system, and the great and continuous changes that occurred within that system as a preface to modern English society.

By the award-winning sports historian, this book goes beyond scores and results to present a unique view of Britain's sporting past.

This is George Gissing's best known and his first novel, standing alongside his classic New Grub Street. It is a distinctive, polemical, dramatic work focused on urban social problems. Gissing deals - with his typical passion, literary skill, and personal knowledge - with the ineluctable evils of poverty, cultural deprivation, 'class', the 'tyranny of money', and the place of women in society.First published in 3-volumes in 1880 this is the best modern edition, with an extensive critical introduction and detailed scholarly notes.
