The "Python" programming language has enjoyed an enormous upswing in recent years. Not least, various single-board systems such as the Raspberry Pi have contributed to its popularity. But Python has also found widespread use in other fields, such as artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML). It is obvious, therefore, to use Python or the "MicroPython" variant for use in SoCs (Systems on Chip) as well. Powerful controllers such as the ESP32 from Espressif Systems offer excellent performance as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality at an affordable price. With these features, the Maker scene has been taken by storm. Compared to other controllers, the ESP32 has a significantly larger flash and SRAM memory, as well as a much higher CPU speed. Due to these characteristics, the chip is not only suitable for classic C applications, but also for programming with MicroPython. This book introduces the application of modern one-chip systems. In addition to the technical background, the focus is on MicroPython itself. After the introduction to the language, the programming skills learned are immediately put into practice. The individual projects are suitable for use in the laboratory as well as for everyday applications. So, in addition to the actual learning effect, the focus is also on the joy of building complete and useful devices. By using laboratory breadboards, circuits of all kinds can be realized with little effort, turning the testing and debugging of the 100% homebrew projects into an instructive pleasure. The various applications, such as weather stations, digital voltmeters, ultrasound range finders, RFID card readers or function generators, make the projects presented ideally suited for practical courses or subject and study work in the natural sciences, or in science and technology classes.

This book is intended to be a hands-on recipe collection of my amplifier designs over more years than I care to remember. There is little emphasis on the scientific explanations nor discussions and the designs can be built by anyone if the instructions are followed. You are about to embark upon an endeavor from which there is no return; some audio aficionados insist, that sound lost during digitalization is present in the grooves of a vinyl record. They just may be right: Life is analog. The same aficionados, this time aided and abetted by audio desperados, equally persist in believing, that only with tubes the absolute Nirvana in sound reproduction can be achieved. Who am I to contradict – and this is what this book is all about. The first time you have enjoyed the spectacular results of your homemade tube audio you have also shared the Opium known as HiFi with the rest of us addicts. You have been cautioned. Several of my esteemed fellow writers have indeed published well-documented scientific documents, designs and opinions based on fact and I am not knocking their contributions. The more successful designs are compiled in this book ranging from extreme high fidelity to instrument amplifiers producing the desired level of harmonic distortion coveted by my fellow musicians and myself. Music and HiFi appreciation is very much a combination of basic abilities and learning. Musicians and professional listeners like conductors and studio engineers do not utilize the same part of the brain for listening as non-musicians and the average layman do. This is fact. Analytic listening is an acquired skill that can be learned. Some of the gurus of the past like D.T.N. Williamson, Stanley White and other pillars of society did not always get their math right and some classic designs could use a little improvement. A few like Peter Walker (Acoustical Quad) had the ability to think out of the box during a time, when HiFi was buzz-word and not really defined, standards were defined by every individual manufacturer and loudspeakers pretty much designed by instinct (pre-Thiele/Small). Revision of some of the classic designs is part of this book too and a product of my affection for perfect sound reproduction and ultimate performance of electric instruments. This is not an audio bible, a lecture on gospel or a revelation. You are already past that since you read this. You are tired of commercial products and seek salvation – I humbly show you the path to it.

Space, the final frontier, will become more and more popular. The space industry is continually growing and new products and services will be required. Innovation is needed for the development of this industry. Today it is no longer possible to follow all the events in field of space. The space market is growing and activities are increasing, especially the market for small-satellites. This book wants to help close the gap and encourage electronic engineers to enter into the fascinating field of space electronics. One of the main difficulties is finding people with knowledge of space electronics design. Nowadays companies have to invest a lot of time and resources to instruct electronic engineers with no experience of space. Only a brief and basic introduction of this topic is typically achieved at university in space engineering lectures. Professionals with practical experience and the necessary theoretical knowledge are scarce. Companies from the space sector are searching for staff with knowledge of space electronics. This book will bring space closer aspiring to the space electronic hobbyists.

Hobbyists can mash together amazing functional systems using platforms like Arduino or Raspberry Pi, but it is imperative that engineers and product designers understand the foundational knowledge of embedded design. There are very few resources available that describe the thinking, strategies, and processes to take an idea through hardware design and low-level driver development, and successfully build a complete embedded system. Many engineers end up learning the hard way, or never really learn at all. ARM processors are essentially ubiquitous in embedded systems. Design engineers building novel devices must understand the fundamentals of these systems and be able to break down large, complicated ideas into manageable pieces. Successful product development means traversing a huge amount of documentation to understand how to accomplish what you need, then put everything together to create a robust system that will reliably operate and be maintainable for years to come. This book is a case study in embedded design including discussion of the hardware, processor initialization, low‑level driver development, and application interface design for a product. Though we describe this through a specific application of a Cortex-M3 development board, our mission is to help the reader build foundational skills critical to being an excellent product developer. The completed development board is available to maximize the impact of this book, and the working platform that you create can then be used as a base for further development and learning. The Embedded in Embedded program is about teaching fundamental skill sets to help engineers build a solid foundation of knowledge that can be applied in any design environment. With nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, the author communicates the critical skill development that is demanded by companies and essential to successful design. This book is as much about building a great design process, critical thinking, and even social considerations important to developers as it is about technical hardware and firmware design.

The short-wave technique has a very particular appeal: It can easily bridge long distances. By reflecting short-wave signals off the conductive layers of the ionosphere, they can be received in places beyond the horizon and therefore can reach anywhere on earth. Although technology is striving for ever higher frequencies, and radio is usually listened to on FM, DAB+, satellite or the Internet, modern means of transmission require extensive infrastructure and are extremely vulnerable. In the event of a global power outage, there is nothing more important than the short-wave. Amateur radio is not only a hobby, it''s also an emergency radio system! Elektor''s SDR-Shield (article no. 18515) is a versatile shortwave receiver up to 30MHz. Using an Arduino and the appropriate software, radio stations, morse signals, SSB stations, and digital signals can be received. In this book, successful author and enthusiastic radio amateur, Burkhard Kainka describes the modern practice of software defined radio using the Elektor SDR Shield. He not only imparts a theoretical background but also explains numerous open source software tools.

Program listings for all Raspberry Pi and Arduino projects used in this book are available for download on the Elektor website.

Vacuum-tube (or valve, depending upon which side of the pond you live on) technology spawned the Age of Electronics early in the 20th Century. Until the advent of solid-state electronics near mid-century, hollow-state devices were the only choice. But following the invention of the transistor (after their process fell to reasonable levels), within a couple of decades, the death of vacuum tubes was widely heralded. Yet here we are some five decades later, and hollow-state equipment is enjoying something of a comeback, especially in the music and high-end audio industries. Many issues surround hollow-state audio: • Does it produce—as some claim—better sound? If so, is there science to back up these claims? • How do hollow-state circuits work? • How do you design hollow-state audio circuits? • If hollow-state equipment fails, how do you go about troubleshooting and repairing it? • Can we recreate some of the classic hollow-state audio devices for modern listening rooms and recording studios? • How can we intelligently modify hollow-state amplifiers to our taste? These and other topics are covered in The State of Hollow-State Audio.

Some of the case study topics are: • Resistor colour code identification • Resistive potential divider circuits • Resistive attenuator design • Zener diode voltage regulator design • RC and RLC transient circuits • Circuit frequency response • Saving data on external memory stick • Mesh and node circuit analysis using matrices • Resonance in RLC circuits • Transistor Biasing analysis • Transistor amplifier design • Design of active filters • Interfacing hardware with GPIO, I2C and SPI • Using Wi-Fi with Python and TCP/IP and UDP programs • Using Bluetooth from Python Full program listings of all the programs used in the book are available at the Elektor website of the book. Readers should be able just to copy and use these programs in their Raspberry Pi projects without any modifications.

The Raspberry Pi is a very cheap but complete computer system that allows all sorts of electronics parts and extensions to be connected. This book addresses one of the strongest aspects of the Raspberry Pi: the ability to combine hands-on electronics and programming. Combine hands-on electronics and programming After a short introduction to the Raspberry Pi you proceed with installing the required software. The SD card that can be purchased in conjunction with this book contains everything to get started with the Raspberry Pi. At the side of the (optional) Windows PC, software is used which is free for downloading. The book continues with a concise introduction to the Linux operating system, after which you start programming in Bash, Python 3 and Javascript. Although the emphasis is on Python, the coverage is brief and to the point in all cases - just enabling you to grasp the essence of all projects and start adapting them to your requirements. All set, you can carry on with fun projects. The book is ideal for self-study No fewer than 45 exciting and compelling projects are discussed and elaborated in detail. From a flashing lights to driving an electromotor; from processing and generating analog signals to a lux meter and a temperature control. We also move to more complex projects like a motor speed controller, a web server with CGI, client-server applications and Xwindows programs. Each project has details of the way it got designed that way The process of reading, building, and programming not only provides insight into the Raspberry Pi, Python, and the electronic parts used, but also enables you to modify or extend the projects any way you like. Also, feel free to combine several projects into a larger design.

Hobbyist electronics can be a fun way to learn new skills that can be helpful to your career. Those who understand the basics of electronics can design their own circuits and projects. However, before you run, you need to learn to walk. It all starts with analogue electronics. You should be familiar with the simple components and circuits and understand their basic behaviors and the issues you may encounter. The best way to do this is through real experiments. Theory alone is not enough. This book offers a large number of practical entry-level circuits, with which everyone can gain the basic experience. Through the widespread introduction of microcontrollers, a new chapter in electronics has begun. Microcontrollers are now performing more and more tasks that were originally solved using discrete components and conventional ICs. Starting out has become easier and easier thanks to platforms including Bascom, Arduino, micro:bit. The book introduces numerous manageable microcontroller applications. It''s now a case of less soldering and more programming.
