In July 1969 Argentina was at a footballing crossroads. The national team’s failure to qualify for the 1970 Mexico World Cup led to a crisis about the state of the game with many wondering how they could ever recover. The answer proved to be right under their noses — Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano had arrived at the country’s biggest club, Boca Juniors, at the end of 1968 and was soon installed as team manager. Pairing Argentinian style with European substance, the result was one of Boca’s greatest ever teams, a first signpost on the road towards Argentina’s 1978 World Cup triumph. Boca historian Leandro Cordobez revisits the iconic ‘69 season to tell the story of a period of Argentine football rarely explored by the English-speaking world. In an age before entrenched rivalries, Boca's performances drew admiration from supporters of all clubs. They were lightning quick in attack yet resolute in defence, above all they played the game with an old-fashioned sporting spirit in stark contrast to the cynicism that had become associated with Argentinian football. By season's end the champions of 1969 were more than just a great Boca Juniors team, they were El Equipo de Todos — Everyone's Team.

'The summer that changed English football' The 1990 World Cup remains a cherished memory for English football supporters. From the official World Cup song, World in Motion, released before the tournament all the way through to Englands agonising penalty shoot-out defeat to eventual champions West Germany in Turin, the summer of 1990 proved to be a watershed moment for the national game following an horrendous decade which almost saw it banned by Margaret Thatchers government. The then Chief Football Writer of the Daily Mirror, Harry Harris, was in attendance for the full seven weeks the England squad were in Italy. From pre-tournament build-up to the final in Rome, he was privy to the many controversies surrounding the squad that have remained mysteries to this day. Why did captain Bryan Robson return home early? Did a quorum of senior players really dictate tactics to manager Bobby Robson? Was the manager the incompetent nice guy he was painted by the press or was that a front hiding one of the shrewdest tactical brains in the game? Going into the tournament Bobby Robson was an unwilling victim in the nasty tabloid war between Rupert Murdochs Sun and Robert Maxwells Mirror. As the tabloids sought to outdo one another, so the England boss was castigated by both. Yet the success of his team soon forced both tabloids to accept him as Englands best manager since Sir Alf Ramsey and, for all the negative headlines, the mild-mannered Geordie bore no hard-feelings towards the press men, particularly the sports writers who were often victims of the rotters - hard-nosed news journalists who would stop at nothing to get a story. Harry Harris has tracked down Robsons squad for their recollection of the tournament and their memories of some of the controversies. When they returned home they were given a heroes reception as tens of thousands of fans lined the streets, it was only then that the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker and Chris Waddle realised that their lives would never quite be the same again... this then is the inside story of the summer that changed English football.

The history of any football club boils down to one thing: great matches; be it a significant win, a great performance, a notable debut, an incredible moment or a disastrous defeat, the big games and historic turning points are what supporters remember. The Making of a Football Dynasty tells the story of one hundred of Manchester United's most significant games and traces the birth and growth of the club from its humble origins as a railway works team to the biggest football club in the world. John's selection of games are not in chronological order but follow themes that have contributed to the United DNA that has made the club the biggest name in the game: exciting football, legendary players, the oldest and most successful youth system in the world and the club's ability to bounce back from tragedy and adversity. Volume One includes the first fifty games which tell the story of United's rise from near bankruptcy to become the only English club to complete the full set of major trophies.

Chasing Glory is the story of association football in Keighley from its early roots in the 1870s to the Second World War. Schoolteacher Rob Grillo has unearthed this story in fascinating detail. Using archive maps and photographs and a host of hitherto unused statistics from the various leagues in the Keighley area, Rob has produced a tremendous book, exploring football's fight to gain recognition in an area dominated by rugby league and against a back ground of poverty and deprivation.

Former Sunday Express chief soccer writer Richard Bott's wry and humorous look at his 40 years in sports writing.

Rob Grillo's fascinating story of Keighley football begins where Chasing Glory left off at outbreak of the Second World War and ends in 1998.

Originally suppressed by the Test and County Cricket Board in 1985, 'Standing the Test of Time' is the controversial autobiography of the respected Test umpire and former Somerset cricket legend Bill Alley, revised and updated to include recent developments in the world game. Now in his 80th year and still living in Taunton, Alley tells of his remarkable rise from poverty in New South Wales, through Colne in the Lancashire League and breaking countless county records with Somerset, to umpiring on the international stage.

This is the first comprehensive history of the game in Scotland. The history of cricket in Scotland is both rich and varied, from the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 to the leagues of the 20th century, culminating in the National League of the 1990's and the debut of the Scotland team in the 1999 World Cup. Produced in A to Z format, from Aberdeenshire to Zeneca Grangemouth, including 80 photographs. It has been lovingly written and compiled by Kirkcaldy Classics teacher and umpire David W.Potter in association with the Scottish Cricket Union.

From its formation in 1905, Chelsea have been regarded as the most glamorous of clubs. Visitors to the Bridge have included Hollywood actresses, Prime Ministers, Cabinet Ministers and even an American Secretary of State complete with Secret Service entourage. But while famous names seem attracted to Chelsea's proximity to London's West End, the team has often disappointed. More recently Chelsea have become one of the most successful of the new breed of Premiership clubs. Under Bates, Stamford Bridge has become home to 39 businesses ranging from travel agencies to banks, restaurants and hotels to insurance companies, with the express aim of insuring his football club against the inconsistencies and dangerous internal feuding that have hamstrung previous chairmen. Over the past 6 years Chelsea has undergone a revolution, but along with progress' has come rampant commercialism -- as one Chelsea fan noted, loyalty is measured by how much you can spend rather than how much you care. The life-long emotional bond that forms between a football club and its supporters is now almost a weakness, there to be exploited by the money-drunk millionaires that have taken over our sacred game'. Life-long Chelsea fan Mark Meehan discovers a club in a hurry: an ageing chairman frantic to win the championship before he retires, a club facing mounting debts, an expensively assembled playing staff and a new manager brought in because the old one could only deliver five trophies in three seasons. Clearly, nearly 20 years after assuming control, Ken Bates is still chasing his elusive "Blue Tomorrow" -- but, as Meehan discovers, he is in danger of losing control of his own club with potentially disastrous consequences.

Jock McAvoy was influenced by his poor 1930s background. A ferocious fighter, a special kind of person who fought hard to give his family a better standard of living. Many older boxing journalists believe that the romance of the ring and its hungry exponents rest, almost entirely, in the years gone by. The 1930s were, without doubt, the greatest period in British boxing history. On the social side, this period was hard and desolate: there was no welfare state, conditions of employment for this generation were oppressive, everyone worked for wages that allowed no margin for illness. If a man didn't work, he and his family went hungry. Man was at his best when up against it and thousands fought to put food on the table for their families. "McAvoy: Portrait of a Fighting Legend" lays not only a man but an era to rest.

Packed with witty anecdotes, exclusive insights and glorious moments from City's illustrious past, 'My Blue Heaven' features the type of footballer that true blues have always identified with -- the terrace heroes who light up a dull Saturday afternoon with their style, passion and commitment to the cause. The concept of My Blue Heaven is simple -- interview the star names and ask them about their favourite games. So we hear from the striker who is still blamed for costing City a league title and the forward who helped City thrash United 5-0 at Old Trafford. Then there's the goalkeeper who put in two FA Cup Final Man of the Match performances but still ended up on the losing side and the veteran defender whose first goal for the Blues remains his most treasured memory. Players featured and interviewed in 'My Blue Heaven' are: Alan Oakes, Alex Williams, Clive Allen, Clive Wilson, David White, Ian Bishop, Joe Corrigan, Ken Barnes, Mark Lillis, Paddy Fagan, Paul Lake, Paul Power, Paul Walsh, Peter Barnes, Rodney Marsh, Roy Little, Tommy Booth and Uwe Rosler.

Dawson explores the very essence of human existence. In his case the answer to the ancient philosophical conundrum What sets humans apart from the animal kingdom?' is straightforward. It is not the ability to form tools, communicate or feel empathy with our fellow planet dwellers but our desire to acquire (and retain) as much trivia as possible. In brief, this is his explanation for modern Britain's obsession with the pub quiz and the consequent growth in the number of question and answer books, many of which have been published under the misapprehension that all a budding quiz setter needs to succeed is a large enough selection of questions that can be adapted according to circumstance. Yet, as Quiz Setting Made Easy makes clear, there are many pitfalls for the budding Magnus Magnusson, not least the murmurs of complaint from contestants attempting to answer vaguely worded and poorly researched questions. Then there are the potential disasters and the nagging doubts that bring the quiz setter out in a cold sweat in the middle of the night: Does the venue have a PA system? How do I make sure people turn up? What happens in the event of a tie? Who marks the questions, them or me? Written in light-hearted vein, Quiz Setting Made Easy is designed to soothe the quiz setter's brow and bring back the fun to what is, after all, a leisure-time pursuit. In addition to his expert advice on the dos and don'ts of quiz setting, John illustrates the style and expertise required of the fully fledged question-master. With 72 rounds containing over 1,100 expertly worded questions, John Dawson makes enough suggestions for alternative topics, interval rounds, tie-breakers and music rounds to keep a quiz-setter going for years. His ideas could also be adapted for use in the classroom, during wet weekends in Cleethorpes or the 90 degrees heat of an M6 traffic jam... in fact anywhere humans pursue the trivial.

Containing John Doherty's subjective views on each of the 339 men who have played for the club at senior level since 1945, The Insider's Guide To Manchester United is the definitive Manchester United players' guide. Doherty (an original Busby Babe and chairman of the United Old Boys committee) candidly reveals the strengths, weaknesses and his personal memories of United's stars.

One of the most perceptive descriptions of Manchester City's play during their glory years was made by Manchester Evening News reporter Peter Gardner who said that "When Youngy plays, City play". For all the talk in the intervening years of greats such as Summerbee, Bell and Lee, it was the local lad made good who made most impact when it mattered. A tall, leggy striker with a venomous left-foot shot, Young scored in every significant game for City in the late 60s. Scorer of two goals in the 1968 Championship win up at Newcastle, the scorer of the 1969 FA Cup Final winner and the first goal in the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup final, Neil Young played as significant a role in the success and style of the Mercer-Allison partnership as anyone. Yet by 1972 he was allowed to leave the club as City began their now familiar relationship with underachievement and mismanagement. In 'Catch a Falling Star', Neil Young explains what he has been up to in the years since his sizzling shots stung the hands of the country's finest goalkeepers. Here he frankly discusses the problem that faced footballers of the pre-Premiership era: "When I left Rochdale for the last time one Friday afternoon I had a week's wages... about £60. I drove home and sat in my lounge for about two hours, wondering what the hell I was going to do. I had a car on HP, a mortgage, a wife and three children to feed. I was the provider who could no longer provide. I had no savings whatsoever and my wife didn't work. I didn't see it coming. It was a calamity waiting to happen." Thus starts Neil's decline into illness and depression. During the next painful decade Neil suffered numerous illnesses, lost his family, his mother and survived a suicide attempt. Thankfully, he has emerged with his spirit intact thanks largely to the love of his third wife, Carmen. 'Catch a Falling Star' is the moving tale of a how a star on the wane managed to mount a personal comeback as impressive as any achieved on the pitch by City's star-studded squad of the late 60s.

Ken Barnes was widely regarded as one of the finest footballers of his generation never to have won an England cap. During a distinguished playing career with Manchester City, Ken appeared in the FA Cup finals of 1955 and 1956 and later captained the club before retiring in the early 60s. He spent nearly a decade away from Maine Road as a manager of Wrexham and Witton Albion before returning to Maine Road as a coach under Joe Mercer. Ken subsequently went on to serve under every City manager as either a coach or chief scout from Joe Mercer to Joe Royle. As someone who holds forthright views on the game, especially when it comes to the subject of coaching, Ken's views could be dismissed as the 'in my day' rantings of another embittered former pro. Yet one should bear in mind that his integrity and knowledge of the game saw him serve under every Manchester City manager from Joe Mercer to Joe Royle. In his time Ken has seen trends come and go -- from the 'deep lying centre-forward' via 'wingless wonders' to today's 'holding midfielder' and is uniquely placed to give his opinions on them all. Away from football, Ken is described as a 'character'. Make of that what you will. That may be a tale for another day. This is the story of Ken's life in football. I'm honoured, and privileged, that he asked me to help him tell it.

George Best is widely regarded as the finest footballer ever produced by the British Isles. His death last November prompted lengthy analysis of his career and his standing in the game, a debate 'The Complete George Best' will help settle. Known primarily for his rock n'roll lifestyle after his football career had finished, this book attempts to shed more light on his football career which was, after all, the source of his fame. Taking in every first class match George played for Manchester United, Northern Ireland and Fulham and a lengthy analysis of his later career in America, 'The Complete George Best' traces a career that caught light in the mid-sixties and burned brightly for the next 7 seasons. Many claimed that Best was the pre-eminent player in the world during this period, his performance against Benfica in Lisbon, when he inspired United to a 5-1 win widely regarded as the turning point for the Ulsterman, after which life was never quite the same as first the birds and then the booze followed fame into Best's life. Best's career was inextricably linked with the fortunes of Manchester United in the 60s and Matt Busby's quest for the European Cup following the tragedy of the Munich Air disaster. United's run to the European Cup Final of 1968 saw Best a marked man. By this stage his talent was well known and George came to life in the semi-final against Real Madrid, scoring in the first leg and setting up an unlikely winner for Bill Foulkes in the second. The final will always be remembered for Best's brilliant goal just minutes into extra time when he found space on the left and skinned the last man before rounding the 'keeper. Most people regard the European triumph as the beginning of the end. In hindsight, and with medals the sole measure of a career's worth, then it probably was, yet Best was good enough to thrill crowds well into the next decade with famous performances such as his double hat-trick against Northampton on a muddy pitch in 1970 and a famous hat-trick against Southampton wearing a yellow away kit. Sadly, alcoholism robbed us of the best of George but most players would kill for a career record that read 639 appearances, 229 goals. This book is ideal both as a work of reference and a detailed insight into the great man's career. Darren Phillips has painstakingly pieced together every game and goal scored by Best from his first team debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1963.

Paul Hince looks back at a remarkable career that reached the highest levels in the ultra-competitive fields of football and journalism. As a professional footballer Paul joined boyhood heroes Manchester City under the legendary Mercer-Allison partnership of the late 1960s before continuing his first class football career at Charlton, Bury and Crewe Alexandra. After retiring from the game he then worked his way up to the heights of Manchester Evening News Manchester City correspondent and, later, became that paper's first and only 'Chief Sportswriter'. Sprinkled with wit and candour, the author reveals the secrets behind Manchester City's success of the late sixties and his unusual start in sports journalism when he reported on the non-league match he was playing in! Paul went on to report on Oldham Athletic's remarkable rise through all four divisions of the Football League before landing the job he seemed born to fill -- Manchester City correspondent of the Manchester Evening News. Paul's reign as City correspondent coincided with a decade-long crisis as chairmen Peter Swales and Francis Lee battled for control of the club. Once his working relationship with former team-mate, now City chairman, Francis Lee had broken down completely and he was branded a 'lowlife' by manager Alan Ball and blamed for their relegation in 1996, Hince felt compelled to forgo the poisoned chalice. Instead he was appointed Chief Sportswriter and England correspondent, from where he had an eyewitness view of the way the tabloid press operated. Famed in later years for getting up the noses of both United and City fans in equal measure courtesy of his weekly columns, Paul retired from the Manchester Evening News in 2006. This is a humourous yet poignant review of a remarkable career from one of the finest sportswriters of his generation.

Written over the course of his lifetime, Louis Hayes' memoirs of Manchester life, "Reminiscences of Manchester" is an evocative memoir of the city's formative years. Beginning in 1840, Hayes recalls a Manchester where the countryside began at Strangeways and farms dotted the surrounding areas. During the course of his lifetime he saw Manchester grow from industrial new town to international trading centre. The story of this growth and recognition comes across in his writings, originally intended as a memoir for his family, that acts as a valuable historical document. Besides outlining the social changes in the city, Hayes profiles the key characters, prominent MPs, social reformers and members of the legal profession, many he knew personally, who made a mark in Manchester life between the years 1840 and 1905.Hayes also chronicles the various triumphs and crises that hit Manchester in this period -- the Great Flood of 1866, Queen Victoria's State Visit of 1853 that conferred city status on Manchester, the Great Treasures Exhibition of 1857 and the Cotton Famine of the 1860s brought on by the American Civil War. The author also outlines the impact made by immigrants to the city, the various traders from the Far and Near East that made an impact on Mancunian trade and society. He also documents the characters prevalent in the theatre during this period, and the 'fads' of Manchester society from popular music to amusements. An invaluable guide to those keen to know more about the formative years of the city and those who wonder what life was like for Mancunians over a century ago, "Reminiscences of Manchester" is a remarkable work re-printed here in full with additional footnotes and the illustrations published in the First Edition.

This was the season when Sir Alex Ferguson's long-held wish to "knock Liverpool off their f**king perch' was made flesh. A season so successful that even European Cup Final defeat to Barcelona couldn't fully diminish the club's achievements. Justin Blundell tells the story of United's triumphs in a punchy, rabidly red-eyed review of every single match and goal. In the wake of the euphoria of Moscow it would have been excusable to regard what followed as an extended hangover. Yet the newly crowned European Champions became World Champions in December following their successful trip to the Far East and when they added the Carling Cup in March they held every honour possible excepting the FA Cup. All this despite a close season dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo's courtship by Real Madrid. This two month long tabloid extravaganza, coming just weeks after United's Moscow triumph, was only settled in mid-August. Then there was possibly the most unpredictable and sensational transfer deadline day in history -- if Manchester City's take-over by Arab billionaires beggared belief, their subsequent attempts to sign any and every player in Europe left the old order reeling. The attempts to de-rail Dimitar Berbatov's £30m move to United worried Sir Alex enough for him to pick the Bulgarian up from the tarmac of Manchester airport in his Audi A8. The season that followed had it's own sensations - Chelsea leading and falling away before Liverpool appeared to pull decisively away only for Rafa Benitez's infamous 'fact' rant to unwittingly de-rail them. By the time the rivals met in early March, many assumed that a United win would close out the title. Instead, Liverpool shocked the hosts 4-1, a defeat compounded by another loss at Fulham a week later. It took Frederico Macheda to rescue wins against Villa and Sunderland to keep United a step ahead before a cagey nil-nil with Arsenal confirmed United's 18th record equalling championship. In Europe, Ronaldo confi rmed his standing as the best player in the world by almost single-handedly hauling United into another fi nal. This time, shorn of the industry of Darren Fletcher, United were no match for the Catalans in a game that proved to be the Portuguese's swansong. Written with an eye for the humour and pomposity surrounding the modern game, Justin Blundell brings the matches, goals and managerial spats back to life. From the Ronaldo transfer saga to the despair of defeat in Rome, this is an entertaining, minute-by-minute guide to the matches that really mattered. It contains the season's best quotes from the likes of Ferguson and Benitez to Paddy Crerand and Mickey Thomas. Far from following the tired blueprint of statistics and dry match reports, "18 Times" is a book for everyone who lives and breathes United, not just on match day but every single day.

"It was to be the trip of a lifetime. Yet what lay in store would change them forever." Friendship, hedonism and wanderlust compel Mancunians Conrad, Rob, Will and Paul to visit the US at a confusing time. With the Iraq war petering out and the prospect of a recession about to break their trip culminates in the dark heart of New Mexico where primeval traditions and internecine disuptes rage on. Their sanitised view of American culture: poker, hot dogs and skyscrapers -- is replaced with horrific ancient rituals and the kidnap of one of their number. To save him the others must win big in Vegas. . .

Over 40 years spent at the cutting edge of football reporting for the Daily Mirror, Daily Express and Today newspapers, gave Derek Potter a unique insight into the characters of legendary personalities in the game. The only non-London based winner of the prestigious British Sports Council Reporter of the Year award, Derek broke many exclusives and became 'The Man Football Can Trust'. Chief among them was the story of Robert Maxwell's attempt to purchase Manchester United from Martin Edwards, alongside endless exclusives detailing transfers, sackings and bust-ups. Featuring a cast of legends such as Bob Paisley, Sir Matt Busby, Denis Law, Sir Alf Ramsey and Bobby Charlton, this book takes an inside look at the Golden Age of football. Sadly, Derek died in 2006. His funeral attended by many of the great and good featured in 'When Football was Fun', a unique memoir, this book serves as a superb epitaph.

Manchester in the late 1960s and early 1970s revolved around the exploits of one man -- George Best. At his side throughout this exciting period was his best friend and confidante Malcolm Wagner (or 'Waggy' as he is universally known) with whom George eventually opened Slack Alice night-club in 1973. Now for the first time Waggy sets the record straight on George's exploits during a period when he was the most recognisable face in the world. The relationship began following a chance meeting at a Manchester night-club in the mid-sixties. Some months before, Malcolm's career as a singer with early 60s pop-combo The Whirlwinds had ended but that chance meeting with Best, then a young footballer with a growing reputation following a number of sensational performances for Manchester United, led Malcolm into a new social group -- the Best Set, which grew in reputation as George's fame grew. By 1968 George was winning the European Cup and Malcolm was running the Village Barber, often cutting Bestie's hair in front of crowds of adoring fans. Manchester was their oyster and as George's fame grew, it soon became clear that the pair needed a sanctuary. They found it in the infamous environs of The Brown Bull, a rundown pub on the wrong side of the tracks. Within weeks of the pair setting up residence there, the nation's most famous celebrities were attracted to a previously non-descript Salford pub. By 1973 George and Malcolm opened Slack Alice night-club in the city, once more attracting the celebrity cream of the day to a club tucked down a small side street in Manchester. Again, the power of George's magnetism ensured the venture's success even if by now Bestie's football career had ended. Regular visitors included the likes of Elton John, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart. The pair travelled the world together from Canada down to Mexico via Palm Springs, then later on to South Africa and Israel. The tales of these trips and many other exploits are told here for the first time as Malcolm comes clean about life with George and the power of his celebrity and reveals the seeds of his ultimate demise through alcoholism. At its centre, this is the tale of two lads with the world at their feet in an era when anything seemed possible. Includes contributions from: Sir Michael Parkinson, Bernard Manning, Graham Gouldman, Paddy Crerand, Andy Peebles and George Best.

From the late 1950's, Mancunians have had a passion for creating and following great music. Be it live or via recordings, the city centre has been a magnet for generations of locals -- and in recent years music fans from all over the country and beyond -- to enjoy. Whilst cities such as Liverpool and Memphis turned their musical heritage into a tourist attractions, Manchester kept looking forward, developing new scenes and tastes. Yet the 2002 film 'Twenty-Four Hour Party People' was probably the point at which Manchester music fans started to look back at the rich musical history of their city. This coincided with the publication of the book "Morrissey's Manchester" by Phill Gatenby, also in 2002 and numerous other publications penned by luminaries of the Manchester scene. Following the success of Morrissey's Manchester, a guide book dedicated to locations associated with The Smiths, author Phill Gatenby has put together several tours featuring other world famous Manchester bands from the Buzzcocks via Joy Division to Oasis, Elbow and Doves as well as the various scenes from beat to acid house or even lo-fi. An interesting guide for anyone with an interest in British music, the guide documents the various clubs and venues that have influenced Manchester based musicians over the last 50 years.
