A striking collection of 90 photographs depicting the rugged grandeur of the Northwest Coast’s Great Bear Rainforest.Spirit of the Great Bear is an immersive journey through the vast wilderness habitat of the spirit bear, the rare white-furred variant of Kermode bears that has long featured in First Nations oral traditions. While much of Great Bear Rainforest is protected—it is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest on Earth—today there are as few as 100 of the bears remaining, making it one of the world's rarest animals.Wildlife photographer and conservationist Jack Plant has spent the last decade exploring the rainforest in search of spirit bears and documenting the natural beauty of this coastal habitat, relying heavily on the guidance and traditional knowledge generously shared by the First Nations communities who have protected the region for thousands of years. Plant was adopted by Hereditary Chief Charlie Mason of Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation in the community of Klemtu.Spirit of the Great Bear features photographic accounts of Plant’s wild and memorable encounters with the white bears, as well as with other extraordinary species found in the Great Bear Rainforest, including grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, orcas, and humpback whales. The book examines the natural and human-caused threats to the rich biodiversity of the Rainforest while highlighting the substantial progress Indigenous leaders and conservationists have made to protect one of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world. It’s both a celebration of the spirit bear’s resilience and its wilderness home, and an urgent reminder of the need to protect this special and vulnerable ecosystem.

While it may not occur to us on a daily basis, there is a widespread cultural tendency toward quick decisions and quick action. This pattern has resulted in many of our society's greatest successes, but even more of its failures. Though the root cause is by no means malicious, we have begun to reward speed over quality, and the negative effects suffered in both our personal and professional lives are potentially catastrophic.Best-selling author and Chief Envisioner Dan Pontefract offers the solution to this predicament with what he coins "Open Thinking," a cyclical process in which creativity is encouraged, critiquing leads to better decisions, and thoughtful action delivers positive, sustainable results. He proposes a return to balance between the three components of productive thought: dreaming, deciding, and doing.Based on organizational and societal data, academic research, historical studies, and a wide range of interviews, Open to Think is an appeal for a world of better thinking. Pontefract introduces tangible, actionable strategies to improve the way we think as organizations and individuals.

Dan Pontefract is on a mission to change the world of work. Lead. Care. Win is his fourth book, and like the previous three is the product of relentless focus, observations and research that have led him to define 9 insightful yet super-practical leadership lessons. His latest thinking will help you become a more caring and engaging leader, one that will fully (and completely) understand the critical importance of crafting meaningful, respectful relationships among all your stakeholders. Every human interaction is crucial. Every exchange can be mutually beneficial. These 9 leadership lessons center on your willingness to improve how you treat people, a call for meaningful change to: Be relatable and empatheticAct not out of ego but out of purposeShare knowledge to build a wise organizationStay present and attentive to the needs of others Embrace change and the opportunity for growth it offersStay curious and adopt lifelong learningThink and act with clarity Commit to balance and inclusivity in all your dealingsAct with humility and thoughtfulnessThe bottom line is that when you care enough to champion others, the workplace becomes happily infectious and the organization benefits in more ways than one. It’s time to care. Full potential is possible.

Petro (Peter) Jacyk survived two of the most horrendous events of the 20th century: the Ukrainian famine of the 1930s, instigated by Stalin and responsible for the deaths of untold millions, and waves of invasion and slaughter from Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany. Fleeing postwar Europe in 1949, he arrived in Canada with seven dollars in his pocket and horrific images in his memory. His adopted country would inspire a deep and lifelong love in Jacyk. Here at last, as he put it, he was “free to live and free to succeed.” Through the Toronto building and land development firm he founded, he established himself as an economic and cultural powerhouse. Exacting in his dealings with others, yet a generous mentor, he sought excellence in all of his pursuits. In time, the man who had begun as a “poor-penny immigrant” became one of the country’s most prominent philanthropists, donating substantial portions of his wealth to projects dedicated to Ukrainian history, language, and culture. Universities such as Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Toronto benefited from his largesse. Leaving Home celebrates the life of a remarkable man determined to make a positive impact on an often-hostile world.

Twice a year, in summer and in winter, appointments to the Order of Canada are posted in newspapers across the country. The range of professions represented are often dizzying, but there are common themes in the choices: excellence, service to the nation, passion, innovation, commitment, dedication, brilliance. The order’s motto effectively captures the generous and selfless spirit of these people: Desiderantes meliorem patriam—they desire a better country. The Order of Canada—our nation’s highest honour—was launched fifty years ago in 1967 by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Since then, almost seven thousand Canadians have received the award for service to their communities, the nation, and, in some cases, the world. To celebrate the Order of Canada’s fiftieth anniversary in 2017, the Rideau Hall Foundation commissioned this exceptional book with the aim of encouraging Canadians to learn about some of the remarkable individuals who have garnered this prestigious award. And though this book captures only a handful of their stories, it is a reflection of the inspiration all Order of Canada members bestow upon us.

The many and varied threads of Canada’s national life come together in its capital region. Where the Rideau River flows into the Ottawa River, an Algonquin community was visited by French explorers and settled by British colonists. The town grew into a city, spilled over a provincial border, and now represents Canada to the world.Ottawa is a seat of government and has all the official edifices to show for it. But as Andrew Waldron shows you in Exploring the Capital, it’s a lot more than that. Follow the twelve guided-tours covering all corners of the region in Ontario and Quebec and you’ll encounter homes and schools, cultural sites and green spaces, houses of worship and shrines to commerce. Early houses, humble or magnificent, from the era of the lumber barons can be found steps away from the latest in sleek condominiums and office towers built for sustainability. Waldron takes you behind the doors of more than 390 diverse structures to learn who made them, how, and why.Exploring the Capital is for architectural experts and amateurs, and for residents and visitors alike. Visit Ottawa’s landmarks and neighbourhoods through its stories, maps, and photographs, and learn how great design and engineering turn landscapes into cityscapes.

Gathie Falk (1928–2025) was one of Canada’s most heralded visual artists: she won the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts, and the Gershon Iskowitz Prize; she was honoured with the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada; and her work was featured in major galleries across the country. From performance works involving eggs and bird feathers, to paintings of flower beds and night skies, to celebrated sculptures of fruit, men’s shoes, and dresses, Falk’s chronicles of the everyday spanned more than six decades and a variety of media. Apples etc. is Gathie Falk’s memoir, a lively, personal, and yet unsentimental reflection on nearly ninety years of art and life. Falk tells of growing up in small Mennonite communities in the 1930s and ’40s. These were hard years, as her Russian immigrant father died just ten months after she was born. While the family struggled financially, Falk recalls cabbage rolls made by hand, a backyard skating rink, and music lessons paid for by an anonymous donor. Her apprenticeship, she says, was a long one. After working a series of menial jobs, she trained as a public school teacher, which led her back to the art classes she’d given up as a child. At the time of writing this book, it had been fifty years since Falk’s art career was launched, and her “veneration of the ordinary” had sustained her through the deaths of beloved friends and relatives, a short-lived marriage, broken bones, and debilitating pain. Interweaving stories about her community, her family, and her daily rituals with anecdotes about her major artworks, Falk paints a portrait of a life well lived.

Food wellness is a term used to describe the ideal state for adopting healthy eating habits into a busy day-to-day life. When food wellness is achieved, the hope is that the body and mind will be able to perform at peak performance. When one of these areas is missing, it is almost impossible to establish sustainable healthy eating habits.Featuring meal plans for a caloric diet of 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 calories, The Complete Plate shows that weight maintenance, and weight loss, can be achieved through the science behind a balanced diet that meets both nutritional and caloric demands. It features 30 daily meal plans with each day perfectly balanced to provide 100 percent of your macro and micro nutrient needs, based on current daily recommended intake (DRI) values. The 90 recipes range from an indulgent ''Coconut and Flax Seed French Toast'' to a savory ''Portobello and Prosciutto Pizza'' to a nourishing ''Creamy Corn, Ham, and Roast Pepper Chowder,'' and include additional snacks so that readers are satiated and energized throughout the day.

The Ash K. Prakash Collection of works by James W. Morrice offers an exciting journey into the personal and artistic explorations of the first Canadian painter who established an enviable career as an artist in Paris by the turn of the twentieth century. While living abroad for the rest of his life, Morrice also played a vital role in advancing modern artistic trends at the turn of the twentieth century in Canada. The in-depth collection of works will feature just over three decades of collecting by Mr. A.K. Prakash, and will weave the intricate story of the artist through the story of the collector and his ability to refine his collection and sustain his passion for the artist and his art.

For more than 100 years, Vancouver has been home to a vibrant and thriving Cantonese opera scene. As a performance art carried out by transient troupes, it is an ephemeral medium that rarely leaves a trace in the historic records. However, an extraordinary treasure trove of early 20th-century Cantonese opera costumes, props, and stage dressings made its way to the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC. In the first book-length study of this little known collection, April Liu retraces the arduous journeys of early Cantonese opera troupes who began arriving along the west coast of North America during the mid-19th century. A close examination of the costumes and props reveal the moving songs, stories, performances, and ritual practices of early Chinese migrant communities who struggled to make a home in a foreign and often hostile land.

Fifty years ago, Canada celebrated its hundredth anniversary of Confederation. At Expo 67, in communities across the country, we celebrated our coming of age as a modern, bilingual, bicultural nation—a place where anyone from any culture could thrive. But beneath the applause and the cheerful music was a darker note. In his public address at the festivities, Chief Dan George lamented what Canada’s centennial did not celebrate: the colonization and marginalization of Indigenous peoples who lived on these “good lands.” Now in the year of Canada’s 150th birthday, we honour a new understanding of our past. We have begun—at long last—to share in a process of national reconciliation and to come together to reimagine our contribution to a global future.Artists give form and meaning to both the land and the invisible landscape of the spirit, both the past and the future. The works of Canada’s artists—both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, historical and contemporary—invite us to see our country and our place within it with new eyes. This book celebrates their visions, as well as the good lands we have shared and shaped for millennia that, in turn, have shaped us.

When former executive and entrepreneur Don Sheppard awoke the morning after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, he was horrified to learn that Donald Trump had become the 45th president of the United States. Committed to strong business principles and ethics throughout his varied career, Sheppard was concerned about the role model Trump as a businessperson—and now the most powerful person in the world—presented to corporate America, and to broader society in general. Leaders strongly influence those who follow them, and there had to be a better way.Part business manifesto and part memoir, The Decency Dividend shows why and how doing the right thing in business is also doing the right thing for business. Principles and profits are not mutually exclusive; in fact, conducting business in a principled way can significantly improve profits as well as relationships with all key stakeholders—employees, customers, suppliers and partners, shareholders and the community at large. After decades of corporate scandals—including Enron, and Lehman Brothers and the other firms who precipitated the Great Recession of 2008-09—the ethical bar for business has fallen to a new low in Trump’s America. The Decency Dividend is a timely reminder of what is truly important in business, and a guide to values-based leadership that will help American business indeed be great again—by being ethical, accountable and sustainable.

As a sales leader, you know your sales pipeline needs filling. You know your customers are unhappy having to “break in” new reps. You know how quickly your customers’ buying behavior changes with increased knowledge and choices. You know that to gain new customers and keep existing ones you must continually exceed their expectations. And you know that the odds are against you: training has little correlation to ROI, and most salespeople forget 80 percent of their training within a month. The solution? Build a team, workplace culture, and sales funnel that ensure long-term adaptability and success. Gimmick-free and packed with clear and effective advice, The Street Savvy Sales Leader uses tried-and-tested techniques from 30+ years of experience, and interviews with more than 100 sales professionals, to help you focus on the people, values, and processes that will enable your business to flourish for years to come.

You are competing in a highly fragmented, highly competitive marketplace where decision makers are more knowledgeable, less risk averse, and busier than ever. As a result, making your numbers is tougher and more challenging than ever. You’re trying to figure out how to get the attention of new customers and to add value along the sales process to close business. And you’re coping with a potentially underperforming and unengaged sales team, despite investments in sales resources, such as training and technology, marketing content, CRM, and other tools to increase sales effectiveness. But you, like other sales leaders you talk with, are not getting the payoff from these investments. You see the data:• Businesses are spending more on training, but there is little correlation to ROI (ATD, 2015)• Without follow-up and coaching/mentoring, salespeople fail to retain 80% to 90% of what they learned in training within a month (Sales Alliance, 2014)• CRM holds a <50% adoption rate, and between 25% and 60% of CRM projects fail to meet expectations• 70% of marketing content is not used by sales (Sirius Decisions)Mark Welch understands your pain points. He’s been there. He has led sales organizations out of the morass and turned them around by following a process called the “10 Imperatives.” This process is the foundation of this book and has been a powerful tool for Mark, a tool built out of trial and error, success and failure, and one that puts the salesperson first in building a best-in-class team. The Street Savvy Sales Leader is a toolkit for you—the sales leader—who has to lead change by identifying the root problems that are the cause of less than optimal performance, addressing those problems, and building a best-in-class sales team that is equipped and coached to consistently hit and exceed targets. It is Mark’s goal to support the sales leader as effectively as he can by providing an end-to-end sales solution based on his own extensive experience and that of more than 100 sales professionals across many industries whom Mark interviewed.

Pontefract combines years of experience and research on employee engagement, behavior and culture to create a work about the three crucial areas of purpose: personal, organizational and workplace role. If all three can come to fruition--if there is a positive interconnection between the three distinct definitions of purpose--the benefits should be felt by employees, teams, the organization, customers, and perhaps most importantly, society as a whole. We can refer to this balanced state as the "sweet spot." When one area is lacking or ignored the results range from disengagement, apathy, lack of growth and even bankruptcy. The Purpose Effect is aimed at both leaders and employees who wish to achieve a purpose mindset on a personal level, for the organization where they are employed and in their role at work, too. A business leader that is committed to purpose will create purpose for the organization. An employee that feels his/her personal sense of purpose is being fulfilled at work will be an invaluable asset to productivity and success. An organization centered on purpose will benefit every stakeholder, from employees to society in general. This "sweet spot" of purpose creates a reciprocal relationship between all three areas and sits at the center of Pontefract''s work.
