Some fires do not start on the fireground. They start in conversations, in silence, in unchecked behavior, and in the cultural embers that slowly burn inside our organizations.Managing people today is more complex and riskier than ever. Technology fuels misinformation and hostility, personal struggles spill into the workplace, and the culture of the firehouse is not immune. What happens online and at home shows up at roll call—and when it does, some of the people we work with become difficult.Dealing with Difficult People is a handbook for leaders who find themselves unprepared for the human problems that can eclipse the fire, the budget, or the call. It is a comprehensive guide for handling different types of difficult people and the situations they can cause, from bullying, defamation, disgruntled behavior, gossip, to the downright dangerous.Author, fire chief, and former Army combat medic Jerry Streich has experienced firsthand the impact difficult people can have in already high-pressure workplaces. His critical new book is here to pass along the lessons that could protect your health, your team, and your reputation.

In his new book, Battalion Chief Salka, a nationally recognized speaker and author with years of service in several career and volunteer departments, looks at both the similarities and differences in the engine company operations practiced by fire departments throughout the United States and discusses in detail the equipment, staffing, and operations of engine company firefighters at structural fires and emergencies in urban, suburban, and rural settings. In this book, Salka teaches readers: the abilities and limitations of engine companies, depending on equipment, staffing, and water supply; how to execute the tactical missions of engine companies; and, the importance of mastering engine company functions for successful fire attack. ""The Engine Company"" is an invaluable resource for company officers (particularly those with responsibility for engine company operations), firefighters who want a better understanding of the functions of the engine company, and training officers and instructors.

This is a 'how to' book written by a 'know how' person for anyone who practices firefighting strategy. Deputy Chief Vincent Dunn is passing on to the next generation of firefighters the lessons he learned from his years of firefighting experience. He describes firefighting strategies for the most common types of fire scenarios and identifies specific firefighting problems presented to an incident commander, by occupancy and construction type. More importantly, he explains firefighting solutions and offers firefighting plans, standard procedures, action plans, ideas, guidelines, explanations, key steps, and systems of firefighting procedures. This book is not about tactics. It's about strategy - plans of firefighting and logical ways to solve problems at fires.

When John Salka joined his first fire department, he was an 18-year-old who just wanted to be a firefighter. Today, he looks back in amazement remembering the thrills, the shock and disappointments. But mostly he gives thanks for a wonderful ride. The Fire Scene takes a look at the people, issues, tools, policies, successes, and failures that are part of the past 40 years in the American fire service. Chief Salka has a story, a lesson, or a warning to help you through your next fire or emergency, whether you are a firefighter, company officer, or chief. He covers nearly every topic, tactic and issue that firefighters face each day. Follow his simple but impactful lessons about using basic tools, discipline, leadership, responsibility, work ethic, communications, search, command, and integrity.

Deliberate training in firefighter rescue and survival is a field that is new to many in the fire service and private industry alike. For those firefighters and company officers assigned to a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), not making the correct split-second decisions - such as immediately recognizing changes in fire behavior or failing to evaluate their level of SCBA air - can result in the loss of the lives of the entire team. In an effort to reduce the number of line-of-duty firefighting injuries and deaths, while at the same time being proactive in the fire service training and leadership, authors Richard Kolomay and Robert Hoff have drawn upon their combined 50+ years of firefighting experience to put together this comprehensive guide. Features and Benefits: Provides an awareness of firefighter safety and proactive fire service training Describes various types of serious firefighter injuries and fatality incidents during emergency incident operations Detail recommended RIT operating methods and procedures, as well as how to activate a rapid intervention team.

Imagine a safer and more efficient fireground without the expense of the latest equipment or technical training. Crew Resource Management for the Fire Service aims to reduce injuries and fatalities on the fireground by preventing human error. This book will provide fire service professionals with the necessary communication, leadership, and decision-making tools to operate safely and effectively under stressful conditions, thereby reducing injuries and deaths on the emergency scene. Although the concept of crew resource management has been around since the 1970s, this is the first book to apply CRM to the fire service industry. CRM emphasizes that in most cases technology isn’t the root cause of catastrophe—human error is the culprit. Therefore steps taken to minimize the impact of errors are the keys to reducing the magnitude of the inevitable human failing. This book will be valuable for college classes, and may be used internationally by the fire service, emergency medical services, industrial fire brigades, technical rescue teams, and any other emergency service provider systems.

In the past decades, lightweight building construction methods and the use of manmade materials in construction and furnishings have become more and more common. The time until structural failure can be expected in a fire has been reduced, and firefighters have seen hotter fires that generate high levels of deadly gasses. But the ventilation methods used by modern firefighters have not kept pace. Positive pressure was first used in the fire service to ventilate a structure after the fire was knocked down. Authors Kriss Garcia and Reinhard Kauffmann have taken positive pressure a step further to achieve effective ventilation in coordination with aggressive fire attack, called positive pressure attack (PPA). Properly used PPA allows firefighters great control over the interior environment of a fire building, and starts at the earliest stages of the operation when ventilation can provide the greatest benefit for victims, firefighters, and the structure. With a small investment in equipment and a commitment to training, any fire department can implement PPA at the company level. Subjects covered in this book include: • Basics of positive pressure and how to maximize its effectiveness for fireground ventilation. • PPA: how effective ventilation can be coordinated to support an aggressive fire attack. • Safety considerations and limitations of PPA and positive pressure. • Other ways positive pressure blowers can be used to help victims and firefighters in a variety of situations. • Implementing PPA on a department, and how to train each engine company to become its own firefighting force that can accomplish both ventilation and fire attack.

This book establishes a proper firefighting mindset and promotes maintaining preparedness for the extreme physical and mental demands of firefighting operations in high-rise and standpipe-equipped buildings. Armed with firefighting weapons that would be much more appropriate at a car fire, far too many fire departments are on a collision course with disaster and tragedy, should they encounter a serious high-rise fire. Countless false alarms, along with 'good luck' while relying on bad habits, have greatly exacerbated the deadly disease of complacency. District Chief McGrail draws from his 25-years of experience, along with the lessons learned from many other fire service professionals, to provide a foundation for success and safety during high-rise and standpipe operations. This book is a compilation of good fireground habits and the many lessons learned by a man who is truly passionate about firefighting and firefighter safety and survival.

First responders who arrive on scene of a hazardous materials incident may be assigned to an engine, ladder truck, rescue, or ambulance with very little sophisticated HAZMAT equipment. Despite these limitations, their actions during the initial response will often set the stage for the success or failure of the entire event. Many incidents start out as minor ""routine"" events that suddenly escalate when something goes terribly wrong. Perhaps first responders did not anticipate the involvement of hazardous materials in a response to a rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles, an EMS call at a residence for difficulty breathing, or a trash fire. That is until it was too late! First responders, despite their best intentions, can quickly become part of any hazardous materials problem. The results can be first responders who are killed or seriously injured, or those who suffer devastating illnesses years after exposure to a hazardous material. Even if you have hours of training on hazardous materials response, this book will provide every reader with… • Practical advice based on the real-life experiences of first responders • A one-stop source on topics such as atmospheric monitors and class B foam • Steps to managing ""routine"" incidents to prevent them from becoming disasters • Limitations of federal hazardous materials regulations you need to know • Real-world examples of first responders who won (or lost) the battle with hazardous materials

Pride and Ownership holds no punches. Chief Rick Lasky takes a hard look at the fire service and finds it short on the only element that makes it effective: passion. Chief Lasky gives an upfront and honest criticism about the need to reignite the love of the job on every level, from chiefs on down. Key Features: • History and traditions of the fire service with overviews of some of the most important fire service leaders, • Detailed explanations of ceremonies for all ocasions from a firefighter's initiation to retirement, • Over 150 photos displaying the rites and ceremonies, • Helpful appendices full of sample documents for fire company use.

Although municipal firefighters respond on a daily basis to industrial fires or emergencies, even the largest fire departments often focus most of their training and attention to structural or wildland firefighting. It is increasingly probable that municipal firefighters will be called to an industrial incident due to a fire or terrorist event. The authors have written this book to specifically prepare the municipal firefighter for responses to a wide range of industrial fires, where the situation will be monumentally different. ""Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters"" is an ideal resource for municipal firefighters who may respond to an industrial incident, personnel at industrial facilities that have in-house, first-response capability, and larger industrial fire departments.

In the second edition of ""Incident Management for the Street-Smart Fire Officer"", author Skip Coleman expands on the mindset and tactics necessary to manage the fireground with more control and less chaos. Incident management system (IMS) is a tool that defines the role and responsibilities of each fire department member, allowing crew members to function quickly and efficiently upon arrival at the fireground - all the while meeting the commander's expectations. Regardless of the size or geographic location of fire department, an IMS is one of the most practical innovations available that yields measurable results. The days of chief officers pulling up to a fire and allowing the fire to run them are over. Incident management makes thinkers out of commanders.

In this new book, Bill Kramer examines the complexities of disaster planning and control, covering the concepts of disaster management, development of disaster and emergency operation plans, and much more. Through examples and case studies, the book is designed to allow the fire officer to study how the fire service has been involved with responding to various disasters and, by learning from the past and understanding the concepts presented, make a difference in the overall outcome of future events.

Ray Downey wrote the first edition of ""The Rescue Company"" in the early 1990s. Building on Downey's legacy, John Norman has written ""Fire Department Special Operations"" to take into consideration the earth-shattering events, funding increases, research advances, expanded capabilities, and changes in regulations and standards that have widened the knowledge gap since the publication of Chief Downey's book. ""Fire Department Special Operations"" is an excellent guide for agencies and individuals in establishing, staffing, operating, and maintaining heavy rescue units in the many forms they may take. It is also an ideal training resource for the officers and individuals assigned the duties that a rescue firefighter must accomplish.
