Discover what it means to orchestrate encounters and tell stories through an unexpected medium – space. With decades of experience and a fresh perspective, Atelier Markgraph has been crafting small- and large-scale spaces and installations that resonate with the public and their clients. Spaces are not meant to sit empty, devoid of human interaction. Markgraph knows this and crafts spatial experiences with exceptional intentionality and precision, all the while never forgetting what really matters: the encounters between people and space. The Atelier is made up of talented storytellers, who use space as a medium to craft narratives and encounters using a radically dynamic mix of digital and analogue elements, elegantly integrated with one another. Using the studio’s projects as case-studies, Erika Brandl Mouton guides readers with poignant writing and perceptive insights through the philosophy of spatial encounters and stories. This volume breaks down complex notions, creating accessible content that upholds the integrity of the Atelier’s practice.

Discover the luxurious and sensorial world of I IN, the celebrated Tokyo-based interior design studio stirring up the world of interiors with its vibrant and distinct use of colour, shapes and materials. Not one to be restricted by pre-existing paradigms, I IN uses familiar tools to achieve innovative and out-of-the-box designs. The two founders Yohei Terui and Hiromu Yuyama, hailing from Tokyo, share their methodologies and values in this their first dedicated publication. Characterising the work of I IN is much like peeling the layers of an onion. The eye is immediately drawn to spaces that impress with their simplicity – there is no excess of materials, no unnecessary details and no gimmicky objects present. However, these spaces are far from cold or impersonal. Rounded structures and curved corners instantly make visitors feel at ease. Fluid lines are soothing to the eye. Warm colours, often derived from natural materials, welcome people and invite them to linger. The colour gradient in I IN’s oeuvre deserves special mention. By enriching surfaces, gradients suggest the radiant presence of concealed light sources, adding depth to the space. Peeling back another layer reveals what could be termed I IN’s secret ingredient: The studio’s use of light. Soft, often natural, lighting shapes space and enhances the spatial experience. In the hands of I IN’s founders, Yohei Terui and Hiromu Yuyama, light becomes a tool to add drama and depth to rooms. The designers also use light to highlight merchandise. But above all, lighting imparts a sense of calm and sensuality to many of I IN’s projects. In this book one can expect to learn about Japanese design conventions and the way the duo is maintaining the delicate balance between honouring their heritage and pushing it into new directions, both in terms of the final product and the process by which they get there. Luxury, a keystone concept for I IN, has an evolved and new holistic meaning for the future. Featuring 13 of the studio’s most recognisable projects, the pages have been carefully curated and designed to inspire and evoke feelings of calm and luxury.

Originating from Montreal but with a global perspective, ACDF Architecture, the subject of this monograph, perfectly embodies the dynamic interplay of dichotomies. Wishing to pay respect to its Montreal heritage while also taking inspiration and liberties from the international design scene, the studio is adept at balancing various goals and identities to achieve distinct results. Balancing the contrasts of black and white, glossy and matte, French and English, ACDF’s projects are a masterclass in navigating these polarities. They infuse new vitality into the contrasts of colour, texture, form, and functional design. ACDF is the perfect blend of North American pragmatism and European flair. The studio is a rich mix of logical thinkers and hopeless romantics; its approach is methodical and exploratory, balancing efficiency and creativity. FRAME provides an unfiltered view of ACDF within these pages, tracing its evolution from a nascent idea to a fully realized architectural studio. The texts also delve into establishing the firm’s core values, its workspace design, and Montreal’s influence on its growth. Anecdotes from Maxime Frappier, the firm’s principal interviewed throughout this book, offer a vivid depiction of the exhilarating chaos and thrill of creating something new. ACDF’s projects move away from ego-driven architecture and towards a more context-sensitive, user-centered approach. This prompts us to re-evaluate our understanding of good architecture and encourages us to explore new methods of developing captivating and resilient built environments. Encompassing a wide range of typologies, from residential to hospitality and commercial outputs, ACDF’s story is sure to inspire in readers a new approach to creativity and design-based work.

Artist Arne Quinze’s installation, My Secret Garden, encourages visitors to explore their own mental place where they keep their most personal thoughts, memories, desires and secrets. My Secret Garden is complementary to his other work, Rock Strangers, on the coastline in Ostend, which is a public confrontation with alienation in the centre of the city. Quinze invited Belgian author Saskia de Coster to capture the alienation which the Rock Strangers exude, as well as the intimacy of My Secret Garden (exhibited at Kunsthal Rotterdam) in contemporary stories and distinctive film footage as the projects were running at the same time. The documentaries are explorations of both projects, through interviews about Quinze’s work, unique footage of the making of the installations and ‘uncanny’ performances. The outcome is a quest for the traces of these works in each and every one of us. The complete box contains two book publications, two documentaries (DVDs) in four languages: Dutch, French, English and German.

Digital technology has irreversibly changed how we see, think and act. A staggering number of us spend half our waking hours online. Right now, more people are gazing at a screen than looking out a window. But a deeper symbiotic relationship with the digital does not quash the desire for a tactile, physically immersive experience. Touch screens don’t eliminate the need to touch something more palpable than an electronic visual display. It’s in this context that today's 'postdigital artisans' operate. Inescapably influenced by the digital world, they nonetheless reject strictly screen-based design and total reliance on automated production, such as 3D printing. They advocate a return to craft, with objects made from clay, metal, glass and wood. They neither turn their backs on technology nor glorify nostalgia, but their high-tech honeymoon is over. They see materials as the heart of art, design, fashion and architecture.Postdigital Artisans profiles 60 contemporary artists and designers, accompanied by rich illustrations of their work. Essays and interviews by and with leading figures such as Hans Ulrich Obrist, Nathan Jurgenson and Glenn Adamson deftly analyse all forms of postdigital creativity, from visual art and design to architecture and urban planning.

Photographer Paul Barbera presents his next volume in the Where They Create series – this time with a different approach, by exploring the theme of his series through geographical locales – not just physically but also spiritually, as ‘place’ is a very fluid concept in today’s global world. Reinvigorated by his first visit to Japan in five years, he makes this metropolis the starting point of this new volume of photographs. Through the lens of creative spaces, Barbera chronicles his journey as he uncovers how contemporary Japanese design, art and creative thinking, has influenced and inspired the world (and vice versa). Barbera's search is simple and clear: he only visits the studios of people whose work he loves and admires, who have inspiring spaces. For this book, Barbera chose 30+ studios which form a diverse selection of his work. Featured are media companies and creatives, as well as artists, architects, illustrators and designers from all over Japan. In addition to all these photos, descriptions of the spaces by the owners of the studios are included. Interviews with these creators reveal the inner workings of these creatives, discovering how their daily environment influences their output.
