Plato is one of the most influential philosophers of all time. He decisively shaped the profile and canon of western philosophy. Criticism of what has become known as Platonism has been continuously nourished by the difficulties of interpreting this philosopher's writings. Plato is commonly viewed as a purely rational philosopher. A philosopher he was indeed, but Plato was also an expert in approaching the non-rational, in the form of mythology among others. Plato has been called a "mythmaker" and a "mythologist". Plato was a visionary who dared to explore the realm of the non-rational in a systematic and disciplined way. In an overall comparison, Plato's philosophical enterprise strives for a comprehensive perspective on the organic whole. The expression "Gestalt" seems to come closest to describing the wholeness. Plato may be considered to be the most prominent representative of classical philosophy to develop a Gestalt philosophy and also the last to do so in antiquity.

Text in English and German. Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar's two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international reknown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composer's thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

This work attempts to organise and classify the entire Skakespearen vocabulary. It presents the "world" which can be derived from Shakespeare's idiolect and gives an impression of the surrounding Elizabethan world. The perspective is thus not solely personal or literary or linguistic but also historical, sociological and cultural. This classified inventory consists of 37 main groups and 897 subgroups, ranging from the physical world to sense perception to law to religion to time to space. Emphasis is given to such interests as communication and motion, solidarity and warfare. Other topics covered include horses and health, clothes and colours, swords and social structures, earth and education, gout and government, plants and pride. To account for the entire vocabulary, certain groups not normally found in a work of this kind have to be formed. The largest consists of the names of places and persons arranged so as to constitute a map and a pocket history, mythology and onomasticon. Others include malapropisms, oaths, word classes and foreign words.

The diary of Henrietta Halliwell-Phillipps.

"The arguments presented in the published papers are of a high calibre, and the written style is clear and persuasive; and this applies to the essays by non-native-English-scholars, which account for a third of Schenker 3." (Music and Letters, vol. 89, no. 3). During March of 1999, the Third International Schenker Symposium took place at Mannes College of Music in New York City. This was the third in a series of conferences devoted exclusively to the work of Heinrich Schenker, the most influential music analyst and theorist of the 20th century. This volume contains studies, originally presented at the 1999 symposium, that focus on topics such as the retained tone, non-tonic openings and the auxiliary cadence; other essays use Schenker's analytical approach to explore the tonal structure of opera and the compositional language of Beethoven, Corelli, Mozart and Stravinsky. This volume gives testimony to the scope of Schenkerian research and represents the exploration of Schenker's ideas by American and European scholars at the turn of the 21st century.

The governments of the Arabian Gulf states have long been planning for the post-oil era. The name of the resource from which their new wealth will flow is 'education'. The Arab ruling families are determinedly promoting the structural change from an oil-based economy to a knowledge-based economy with the goal of creating a knowledge-based society. The eight states neighbouring the Persian Gulf are witnessing an 'education revolution', with conscious links to the tradition of Islamic scholarship which flourished in the 8th-12th centuries CE, and which remains largely unknown in Europe. This guide describes for the first time the most important developments in tertiary education from Iraq, via Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, to Iran. At the same time it demonstrates that the visionary Sheikhs see German universities as potential partners in the transfer of knowledge and are prepared to enrich the dominant Anglo-American culture of the university sector with elements from the land of Humboldt.

Text in English & German. Book & CD-ROM. In her book "The True Face of William Shakespeare", critically acclaimed as a ground-breaking work, the renowned Shakespeare scholar Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel in collaboration with forensic experts from the Federal Bureau of Criminal Investigation, medics, physicists and other specialists proved that there are four genuine likenesses of Shakespeare taken during his lifetime or immediately after his death, among them the Flower portrait (1609). When Dr Tarnya Cooper, a curator at the National Portrait Gallery in London, cast doubt on the authenticity of this picture, the author undertook a renewed comprehensive investigation of the Flower portrait, once again involving an array of international experts including a criminologist, an expert on Old Masters, a dermatologist, a radiologist, a conservator, a picture restorer, an expert on inscriptions, and another Shakespeare scholar. A joint inspection of the painting in the Royal Shakespeare Company's depository in Stratford-upon-Avon, and the analysis of the BBC film "The Flower Portrait", demonstrate strong powers of observation and a thorough multidisciplinary approach, which make for a suspenseful read. A CD-ROM with illustrations included.

Text in English & German. This book features 14 contributions treated diversity and exchange ratios of musical life in Northern Europe -- from Estonia to Ireland. The concert life with its fundamental institutions , the choral movement as a social and political phenomenon and the importance of musical theatre in the company of 19 Century are thereby brought into focus. Play an important role in questions of cultural identity formation of various national and social groups as well as processes of reception , which can be viewed in this context as a kind of cultural transfer. One concern of the present volume, it is finally, to take the "marginal" regions away from the "big" history of music in the spotlight and to show the network of interrelationships and transfers, belonging to a coherent cultural region -- whether in the field of musical life (house music, music in public spaces), music education or in the field of publishing, concert or club system.

This volume of essays, international in scope, illuminates a vast graphic output situated culturally between "high art" and "popular imagery" that has as yet been little explored either by art historians or general historians. The essays focus in a systematic manner on the rich iconography of the "Century of Revolution" (c.1770-1871) and range over political allegory, portraiture, fashion prints, maps, book illustration and caricature, presenting a panorama of the graphic arts in this age of the "culte des images" (Baudelaire). The volume investigates the conditions of their production, the manner of their consumption, their evocative power and their diffusion across Europe. In this way it makes a ground-breaking contribution to the development of historical and interdisciplinary study of the image.

What do artists who choose dance as their subject tell us -- or not tell us -- about dancers and dancing? Spanning the globe from eastern and western Europe to Turkey, Korea, Polynesia, and the United States, Imaging Dance brings together the work of thirteen dance and art scholars who interpret images of dance and dancing. The images date from the sixth century AD to the present, and include paintings, drawings, lithographs, etchings, wood-block prints, stone carvings, and photographs. Each chapter enhances appreciation of artistic renderings and contributes to understanding how people see and envision what they see. Through these engaging and richly illustrated accounts, scholars, students, and general readers will find information about contexts and settings in which dance occurs, socio-cultural attitudes towards dance and dancing, artistic techniques and conventions, religious and political philosophies, rituals, repertoire, and details of movement. Readers interested in the performing and visual arts through a variety of perspectives -- from art, dance, history, dance ethnology, and anthropology -- will find Imaging Dance a welcome addition to their libraries.

This book attempts a conceptual clarification of Kant's approach to culture, given the lack of systematic study of this aspect of his thought. At its origin there was only a thematic interest in the manifold meanings of the term "culture", as well as the underlying persuasion that Kant's moral philosophy could provide us with a systematic framework to understand the increasing relevance of "culture" in modern thought. Specifically, the hypothesis was that the emergence of culture as a relatively autonomous realm was implied in Kant's refusal to let nature play a role in the constitution of the moral norm, and his requirement that the moral norm be defined through pure reason alone. As a result, culture would appear as a middle terrain: being neither empirical nature nor pure morality. Accordingly, culture can be approached either from the perspective of nature, or from the perspective of morality. Both approaches represent what can be termed "Kant's explicit account of culture". Behind this explicit, two-fold account of culture, however, an implicit account of culture in terms of "projection of man's subjectivity" can be discovered. This latter account, itself a consequence of the critical enterprise, constitutes Kant's most original contribution to the philosophy of culture.

The dawning of the digital age has raised the question of the role libraries can expect to play in the future. Are they educational and cultural institutions -- or service centres? With the help of their varied media collections, their technological infrastructure and their expertise in information management, libraries will assuredly rise to meet the challenges of this balancing act. This third revised and updated English edition of "Portals to the Past and to the Future" by Jürgen Seefeldt and Ludger Syré is a precise state-of-the art report on current German librarianship. Lavishly illustrated, the book uses selected examples to show the outstanding results nation-wide co-operation has achieved whilst at the same time portraying the history and the different types of German libraries. The reader will gain a revealing insight into both the cultural and educational policy underlying German library structure and the organisation of professional training in librarianship. This book has been translated not only into English but also into Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Turkish and has since become the standard work on libraries and librarianship in Germany, providing trainee librarians and non-librarians alike with a clear and easy-to-follow picture of the way libraries were able to co-operate in the aftermath of the Second World War to create a flexible and effective decentralised library network more than a match for the challenges of the third millennium.

The first decade of the 21st century offers the possibility of a cartography of the 20th century from a short but increasingly clear distance. Central to such an undertaking, however, is the question of its predetermining structural origins in the 18th and 19th centuries; this collection of critical texts and essays is concerned with these origins. The title "Facing Mental Landscapes" and subtitle "Self-Reflections in the Mirror of Nature" programmatically refer to an individual reflecting the surrounding physical universe as a mere projection of the mind: around both 1800 and 1900, major paradigm shifts emerged from an intellectual crisis within just over two decades. In literature, fine arts and music, these radical innovations - primarily philosophically motivated - went through transformative stages in the course of the 20th century. One of the main goals of this volume therefore is to contribute to a reconstruction of these iconographic or iconoclastic formations of discourse between and within the two eras of Idealism or Romanticism and Modernism. With contributions by Jale N Erzen, László F Földényi, Ursula Franke, Christiane Heibach, Karl Hepfer, Klaus Herding, James Knowlson, Klaus Lankheit, Anett Lütteken, Manfred Milz, Tanehisa Otabe, Ulrich Pfarr, Wieland Schmied, Jörg Traeger and Christopher S Wilson.

China is being hailed as the rising power of the twenty-first century, bringing about dramatic global changes. But according to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, the European Union can be seen as a new "non-imperial empire". In any case, there is no denying the rapidity with which Chinese-European relations have developed over the past twenty years. In this work, specialists from China and Europe go beyond the everyday political debates and economic rivalries to investigate the relations of these two major global players in order to enrich reciprocal understanding. Making full use of their backgrounds from a variety of fields of study, the following selected topics are tackled: Historical Dimensions; Currency and Trade; Security, Energy and Expansion; Change, Transformation, and the Future.

Brian Grant offers another extremely original, fascinating, and important work. The book provides not only one of the most sustained attempts in contemporary epistemology to take global scepticism seriously, but does so by offering a fascinating and spirited defence of the view based upon what Grant refers to as a "truly mind-boggling but almost universally neglected" argument of Hume's in the Treatise. Grant's focus centres round Hume's argument and the challenge it represents. The various discussions of the anti-sceptical positions and the strategies they employ are focused through the lens of this challenge. The result is a captivating discussion of a very old problem from a truly novel point of view. The book provides a useful background resource that is accessible enough to be suitable for introductory undergraduate courses, yet sophisticated and rich enough for upper level graduate courses.

This book poses the question how the varied public manifestations of religion, including their argumentative ability, can be pacifically integrated into social and political life. The comeback of extreme ideologies, which refer -- justly or illicitly -- to their religious basis as protagonists in the public arena, makes us aware once again of the fact that religious tolerance must not go so far as to foster the suppression of public order: it has its limit where limitless freedom is used to destroy freedom for the sake of ideologies which are hostile to human dignity. The first part of the book deals with the question in terms which are conceptually open and which relate religion and politics with human action and history. The second part analyses how political thought has conceived the relationship between religion and politics by referring to certain milestones of philosophical-political thought.

Text in English & Spanish. One of the concepts which deserve particular attention by philosophers of the 21st century is that of life and, more specifically, that of human life. Religion has played the role of providing an answer to the limits with which life confronts itself, namely sickness and death. Religion offered traditionally the knowledge of salvation and provided the ultimate sense of life. Yet, in recent times, religion has been increasingly substituted by other instances in its care for human life. Thus, new questions arise: How far the state and the market can take responsibility for the meaning of human life and give adequate answers to the paradox that suffering and death keep on perplexing man? Can the state make use of technology and scientific knowledge in order to regulate population according to its objectives? Is there any ethical limit to the experimentation with the different phases of human life? Is it possible to preserve a sacral sphere for human life? This book presents an extensive reflection in order to find answers to all these perplexities.

Oman differs from other Arab countries of the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf region in having a long history as a unified state. It is also famous as a seafaring nation and for the Ibadi tradition of Islam practised by most of the population. This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Tübingen in May 2011 with the aim of highlighting other, previously little known or studied aspects of Oman's history. The conference focused on the complex interrelationships between Oman and other countries bordering the Indian Ocean, and on views "from outside" of Oman's culture and religion. Researchers from a wide range of disciplines examined these questions and the approaches and conclusions presented here are similarly wide ranging, from the pre-Islamic archaeology of Oman and the multiple languages of East Africa to the economic and cultural ties between Latin America and Oman. The technology and history of shipbuilding are also examined, using previously little-known source material. But however varied their themes, all the essays clearly emphasise Oman's significance as an economic and cultural bridge between the eastern and western Indian Ocean.

Omanis in the pre-Islamic period were already familiar with the coastal regions of East Africa and the islands east of them. In the early Middle Ages, members of Omani royal families and their followers began to emigrate to the region, with some of them founding small princedoms. After approximately 150 years of Portuguese dominance, the Omanis drove the Portuguese out of the coastal areas north of Mozambique, and a period of prosperity began under Omani rule. In a treaty signed in 1822 between the British and the Omani ruler, Sayyid Said, the British ceded supremacy to the Omanis over the coastal areas of East Africa between northern Mozambique and southern Somalia. This led to another period of prosperity under Omani rule, which ended in the so called "Revolution of Zanzibar" in 1964. In this book the author presents for the first time a comprehensive survey of the archaeological evidence of the Islamic period in the coastal areas of Kenya and Tanzania, as well as relevant written sources in African, Oriental and Western languages and provides a synthesis of the two different sets of sources.

This volume is focused on the central issue of contemporary theatre and performance studies -- that is, the issue of the actor/performer and the question of his or her public negotiation of normative orders. The international authors of this volume discuss the entanglement of actors/performers in a variety of normalising practices, offering philosophical investigations, performance analyses, historical examples, and personal experiences. The collection will be of interest to anyone concerned with the political potential and ontological dimension of being on stage within and beyond politics in terms of party programmes and the state administration of polity. With contributions by Elaine Aston, Sruti Bala, Wolf-Dieter Ernst, Rikard Hoogland, Birgitta Johansson, Joe Kienast, Michal Kobialka, Heide Lazarus, Ruta Maeikiene, Juliano Mer Khamis, Kati Röttger, Tiina Rosenberg, and Willmar Sauter.

The St Albans Psalter is the most valuable manuscript belonging to the Diocese of Hildesheim, and has an importance that extends beyond regional or national boundaries. In November of 2009, the Cathedral Library in Hildesheim, responsible for the preservation of the manuscript, organized an international conference. Experts from Germany, France, Great Britain, Australia, and the US discussed various aspects of their research on the Psalter. The papers given at the conference are documented in this volume.

In this international historical survey the different varieties of realism are explained in their theoretical context and categorised according to established definitions. The book is divided into three chronological sections. The first part, covering the years 18301917, describes the origins of the realist style in Europe and North America, the emergence of Naturalism and the origins of socialist art. The second part (1917-1960) explains the different stages of socialist realism in the USSR as well as the directions taken by realism in the West (social realism, magic realism and documentary photography) and in emergent countries (Mexican muralism and other forms of revolutionary art). In the last part (1960-1990) the influence of modernism on realism is discussed (new realism, Pop Art, photo-realism, political art in Asia and Latin America, forms of critical realism in the world-wide student movements of the late 1960s). This is the only extensive manual of its kind to be published in the 21st century describing the varieties of realism in Argentina, Australia, Austria, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia (USSR), Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, United States of America. The manual includes a dictionary of artistic terms.

In the early modern period, Latin was the most important international language and was therefore regularly used in political contexts in order to shape ideological discourses of the time. The present volume collects papers of a conference dedicated to these ideological impacts of Neo-Latin literature. The contributions cover a wide range of texts connected with some of the most prominent political discussions in Europe during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. They do not only shed light on the specific historical context, but also describe more general discursive mechanisms on which the specific texts are relying (eg: the role of exemplary texts and figures from antiquity, the importance of literary genres, the connection with vernacular traditions). Thus, the volume makes an important contribution to understanding the crucial importance of Latin literature within the political culture of early modern Europe.

The Austronesian-speaking Sama peoples make up one of the most widespread cultural groups within the Southeast Asian island world. The so-called sea-nomadic Sama Dilaut, part of the linguistic sub-group of the Sama-Bajau, form a very distinct community both socially and culturally. The performing arts are a crucial part of their life and cultural identity. Yet, previous studies of Sama Dilaut societies have hardly touched upon their music or dance forms. This edited volume attempts to close this gap in our knowledge. Contributions focus on kulintangan and other types of instrumental music, song repertoire and dance. Other topics include: Continuity and transformation in Sama Dilaut performing arts; Issues of globalisation and identity negotiation through music; Transnational flows and their impact on Sama Dilaut music and dance; The relationship between Sama Dilaut performing arts and those of surrounding communities; The impact of constructions of nationhood on Sama Dilaut music-making.

An exceptionally beautiful and hospitable country, Oman is a researcher's delight, with archives and manuscripts, archaeological and ethno-archaeological attractions ranging from pre-Islamic Arabia to the present, and modern multi-tribal communities. Located on the southern edge of the Persian Gulf, where the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet and control the entrance to the Persian Gulf, it has stood at a commercial and cultural crossroads for centuries. But with commercial sea routes also to Africa and Asia, it is simultaneously a contemporary state that combines modernity and tradition, religion and multiculturalism -- a place where the present meets the past without being bound by it. It is, thus, no accident that Ibadis have played and continue to play an important role in the history of Muslim theology and its political theory, a role that only in recent years has begun to be acknowledged in international academic circles. This volume presents the proceedings of the first international conference dedicated to Ibadism and the Sultanate of Oman, which was held at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in November 2009. The goal of the conference was to introduce Ibadism and Ibadi Studies to the worldwide research community and, indeed, it has served as the springboard for other conferences and the founding of academic groups dedicated to Ibadism and the Sultanate of Oman. In the first part of this volume, we are guided through Ibadi history, theology, and jurisprudence while the second part opens the reader to a broad vista on the dialectics between religion, society, and politics within contemporary Ibadi communities and especially that of Oman. By introducing Ibadism to the broader academic community, we hope to contribute to the mutual understanding and rapprochement of peoples, cultures, and religions. In this regard, each paper in the present volume has lasting value.
