To effectively deal with any chemical-based problem, including pollution, environmental, health and safety professionals must have at least a rudimentary understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry. This book provides such professionals with an introductory reference that will help them to understand the fundamental principles of chemistry and to understand those principles as they apply to the environmental compliance programs that regulate workplace activity. Written for anyone whose work involves environmental management, planning, impact assessment, protection, or compliance, or whose responsibilities include designing, implementing, and evaluating a health and safety program, Chemistry for Nonchemists provides a detailed overview of chemistry and its principles, chemical nomenclature, chemical reactions, and their application to regulatory compliance programs under the various environmental, health and safety laws. This book will help readers understand the "laws" of chemistry and the ramifications of out-of-control chemistry. The book begins with a review of the periodic table, a look at chemical structure and bonding, and an explanation of key terms. The author, a 35-year environmental veteran, then focuses on the fundamentals of organic and inorganic chemistry, the chemistry of water, and chemical reactions as they apply to environmental compliance programs. From there, he moves to more advanced discussions of solvents and solutes and concludes with in-depth examinations of advanced sampling and analysis, the complex reactions of metals, and chemistry''s role in risk assessment.

Slip-and-fall accidents are a growing problem. The total cost of these accidents now approaches 80 billion dollars each year, and that number is expected to double within the next decade. In Falls Aren't Funny: America's Multi-Billion Dollar Slip-and-Fall Crisis, author Russell J. Kendzior provides a comprehensive look at one of the most pervasive yet seldom addressed problems facing our world today. The book's three parts explore slips-and-fall accidents themselves, what causes them, and what can be done to prevent them. Kendzior begins by examining the financial costs, the industries hardest hit by slips and falls, and the heightened risk to the elderly population. He then looks at the causes for the numerous slip-and-fall accidents and injuries, from inadequate floor care to improper footwear, and the contributions of the insurance, legal, and manufacturing industries and how they worsen the problem. Finally, he outlines what can be done to prevent slip-and-fall accidents, and how everyone from manufacturers, to property owners, to the general public can help to reverse the trend of this increasingly expensive and dangerous problem. The book is replete with stories of real slip-and-fall accidents and injuries, up-to-date statistics, illustrative charts, and tips for prevention. It is comprehensive, dealing with all aspects of slip-and-fall accidents, their causes, and methods of prevention, while also being accessible and entertaining. Common safety paradigms, the author argues, hamper the progress of safety in the workplace, contributing to the more than four million serious injuries Americans suffer at work each year and to the rising work injury rate worldwide. Failure to reevaluate these accepted mindsets puts both safety professionals and workers in danger of locking themselves into outdated, preconceived concepts that could end in disaster.Fueled by more than 30 years in the safety industry and by thousands of interviews with managers and workers worldwide, McKinnon confronts the safety industry's most prevalent and most dangerous myths head-on. He identifies 20 common safety paradigms, examines how these misconceptions negatively impact the way employers manage safety and health in their facilities, and provides guidelines for changes that will reduce accidents in the workplace. Each paradigm is examined in detail and includes real-world case studies, dangers, and guidance that you can immediately apply in your workplace to refocus your safety systems and reduce accidents.

Effective November 2006, buyers of commercial real estate have new liability protections against hazardous substances contamination on their property—even if they know about it at the time of purchase—provided they conduct all required research under the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule. Commercial Landowner CERCLA Liability Protection provides a comprehensive examination of the new EPA Final Rule and compares the new EPA rule to the previous Phase I All Appropriate Inquiry Standard Practice established by ASTM.Prior to EPA's All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule, the well-established ASTM Phase I Standard Practice provided the only guidance for conducting environmental site assessments for real estate properties. Now, in conjunction with the EPA, ASTM has revised its standard to conform to the new EPA Final Rule. In addition to providing two new protections, the "Contiguous Property Owner" and "Bona Fide Prospective Purchaser," the new All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule requires new protocols not previously required by the ASTM standard, including interviewing previous owners of the property; conducting a visual inspection of adjoining properties; and reviewing local government records, institutional and engineering controls, and environmental cleanup liens.Commercial Landowner CERCLA Liability Protection provides readers with an easy-to-use reference on such topics as the regulatory background of the rule, benefits and incentives that affect real estate buyers, components and requirements of the new All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule, requirements and guidelines for conducting historical and government research on a property, and distinctions between the EPA All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule and the ASTM Phase I Environmental Site Assessment.

According to the EPA, Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste (HHW) every year. Although interest in managing old and unwanted consumer products with characteristics of hazardous waste—household cleaners, pesticides, paint products, and automotive products—emerged in the late 1970s, the management of such materials has been a bouncing ball of responsibility for more than two decades. Consumer products are exempt from federal and most state regulations because of their household origin, and many communities still lack the basic information, guidance, and planning support for HHW management.Written by the forefathers and practitioners of HHW management, this book provides solid waste management professionals, municipal officials, chemical waste handlers, environmental students, and others with a comprehensive look at the state of HHW management. Readers will learn answers to questions such as* What is hazardous household waste and why do we collect it?* What are the main concerns?* How are HHW collections held and collected material managed?* What are some best management practices?* How can I motivate behavior change?* How can a product stewardship approach increase collections, cover costs, and promote better products?

The battle is an old one: man versus nature. And in modern society, man includes the military. Machines. Chemicals. Who wins the battle and at what cost? This practical analysis of the conflict between national security requirements and environmental responsibility looks at just that.William Wilcox examines the most common environmental issues that the military faces during wartime and peacetime and provides an introduction to the legal authorities, including statutes, regulations, and executive orders, governing the application of environmental law to military activities. It also illuminates the tension between environmentalists and regulators concerned with the damages that military development, testing, and training operations inflict on the environment and military leaders dedicated to using actual field conditions to prepare soldiers for war. In addition, this book addresses environmentalists' desire for greater accountability from the military, which has a history of dumping, spilling, stockpiling, and launching harmful chemicals. Although some exemptions from environmental compliance have been granted to the military, federal agencies are sometimes held to higher standards than private sector companies. Wilcox, an experienced environmental attorney and former military attorney, focuses on the legal framework in which environmental issues are addressed and examines how policy translates into legal application. He also examines the changing relationship between the military and the environment by exploring environmental law as it applies to the military domestically and the impact of international environmental law on combat operations. In addition to addressing such environmental laws as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the author provides an overview of the laws governing access to information concerning the military's impact on the environment.Other topics covered include civil penalties and sovereign immunity, water rights,

Geology for Nongeologists introduces basic concepts in geology: how rocks, minerals, and fossils are classified, how wind, ice, and water have shaped the earth, how mountains are formed, and how volcanoes, geysers, earthquakes, glaciers, and groundwater work to modify the physical structure of Earth. Primarily designed as an information source, and intended to be a non-technical survey for those with little background in science, this book is presented in a reader-friendly style. Written in straightforward and accessible English, this book provides a broad look at a multidisciplinary field that incorporates aspects of biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, geography, meteorology, pedology, and many other areas of science. This book fills the gap between general introductory science texts and advanced environmental science books. Books on the subject are typically geared toward professionals in these fields. This makes undertaking a study of geology daunting to those without a specific background in science. However, this complexity also indicates geology's broad impact. Because geology so widely affects us, sometimes in profound ways, it is important to understand its basic concepts. This book presents information that everyone needs to know about geology and about how science and scientists work. The author uses illustrative problems in terms of commonly used geological parameters, and each chapter ends with a chapter review test. Readers discover a new appreciation for their surroundings and a broader outlook on their environment.
