The incredible story of great Asoka is told here for the first time. It is the story of a King who knew ambition, intrigue, murder, and war, too well. Yet he became, as H.G. Wells said, the greatest King in world history. It is an inspiring story for all: today's leaders, young men and women. Asoka has shaped today's India more than any other leader: vegetarianism, compassion for all life, religious tolerance, and love for peace. Buddhism is his gift to the world.

All of us want to be successful and excel in whatever we are doing. But there is a price tag, on all we want in life. It is in the form of denying instant gratification for our long-term goals and cherished desires and purpose. Unless you know what you want in life, we will be like a rudderless ship. This has to be accompanied by a single-minded focus. Unless we seek knowledge and become excellent in our respective fields, there is no chance of our outshining others. Once we are off tangent from our goals, we loose our game completely.

India, the land of Vedas, has the oldest cultural heritage. It has produced many great scholars, musicians, scientists and sages. Many of our great masters have been buried in oblivion and their valuable contributions are not available anymore. It is with this view, this commemorative volume is planned, in order to keep the memory of "e;Sitar-Sudhakar"e; Acharya Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan alive. A true representative of the SENIA tradition, Khan Saheb dedicated his whole life for maintenance of the purity and tradition of our music and never compromised his ideals for mere public appreciation. As a result, he was not given his due either by the Government or by public. This volume has three sections: first consisting of the reminiscences and tributes paid by late Khan Saheb's friends, admirers and followers; the second section consisting of invaluable articles on various aspects of Indian music by internationally famed scholars; and the third section on Khan Sahab by the author and some of Khan Sahab's compositions. This volume is a testimony of Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan Saheb's stature as Sadhak and a respected musician.

India is the world's largest democracy, and looks confidently to joining the ranks of the most advanced industrial economies. Antonio Armellini, former Italian Ambassador to India, looks at the opportunities and pitfalls confronting India in the twenty-first century: a buoyant economic climate and a strong "e;can do"e; mentality among the people have to reckon with a bloated bureaucracy, widespread corruption, the enduring influence of caste and the role of Karma. In vividly illuminating pages, the author analyses the various aspects of the country's institutions and the mechanisms of its civil society, and provides an original insight into the motivations of the remarkable optimism with which Indians pursue the perspective of accelerated economic growth and global strategic influence, indicating in their aspiration to be recognized as a Super-Power. Many hurdles remain before the elephant can confidently fly, but the combination of optimism and strong commitment which characterize contemporary India lead the author to a reasonably optimistic conclusion.

Television in India has caused miracles in socio- cultural and political scenario but since its inception academicians have not recognized its potential as a serious stream of study. Despite all criticisms, television has become the reality of contemporary India. This change is obvious because television has touched and moved all sections of life during last two decades. Understanding of television as a powerful visual medium is required for analyzing the impact of television at subconscious level. The basic premise of this book is to provide readers a researcher's perspective so that a serious debate on the content and various issues related to Indian television can be generated. To analyze the present and foresee the future it's always necessary to go through the historical perspectives of any medium. Starting with its growth, the book covers almost all contemporary issues related to Indian television, i.e. ratings, reality shows, citizen journalism, bias in news, diversity in content, cultural discourse, impact on children, ethics, etc. Most of the time television, is debated in the context of news channels whereas this book covers Indian television as a whole in its content. It provides useful study material on various scattered topics related to television for students and teachers. It also contains many acts, codes, guidelines and other useful documents related to Indian television.

1971 was an exceptional year for India for the development and exercise of its national power dynamics. It had won an outstanding military victory against a foreign power the like of which it had not known in the centuries of the sub-continental history before it. Politically and diplomatically it kept at bay the rest of the world while its soldiers decisively defended its vital national interests, decisively defeated Pakistan's military regime, and liberated the atrociously oppressed people of the erstwhile East Pakistan to become an independent Bangla Desh. The Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the late Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw, decisively led the nation to use the vital instruments of statecraft and the nation's armed power to give India a brilliant military victory that the nation had not experienced in the centuries gone by. For the first time after the independence of India there was complete synergy between the political executive and its military power. When all other moves had failed, the soldiers created the necessary conditions for a political initiative to promote the long-term national purpose of peace with Pakistan. Unfortunately in the post war negotiations the political executive failed to build upon what the soldiers had won on the field of battle. Even more so in the years that have followed, the political executive and its vital military instrument of state power are being driven apart.

These stories are reflective of the dark and turbulent times we are living in, Painful realities getting compounded by communally charged political brigades denting everyday living. And to survive in this mess one has to find ways of escape. I found mine, writing these stories.

This volume puts together a selection from the English translations of J.P. Das's poems written over the last four decades. These translations have earlier appeared in eleven collections-from the earliest First Person (1976) to the latest J.P. Das Omnibus (2012). The poems are arranged chrono-logically as they appeared over the years in original Odia. Names of translators are given at the ends of poems where the translation is not by the poet himself. If contemporary Oriya poetry has acquired a new dimension and sophistication in terms of vision, technical integrity and innovative use of the creative medium, it was because of Das's contribution. His passion for the diverse facets of life and existence makes his poetry vibrant and rejuvenating. The sense of rhythm that he tries to capture in his poetry is very close to the colloquial speech. These selected poems in translation bear testimony to the many qualities outlined in the assessment above.

This book is an effort initiated by the lawyers of India and Pakistan to work jointly to ensure that the Pakistani prisoners languishing in Indian jails are treated in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution of India. Similarly, ensure that Indian prisoners in Pakistan are not denied fair trials. Unbelievable are the facts, incidents and illustrations in this small book called, 'Unbelievable'. The invitation from Zulfiqar Ali Jehangir, Advocate, President of Lawyers Congress Lahore inviting an Indian lawyer to visit Pakistan is unbelievable itself. The galaxy of Supreme Court lawyers of Pakistan coming to receive Prof. Bhim Singh at Wagah border is not believable either. The Supreme Court Bar Association in Lahore presenting a special shield (award) to Prof. Bhim Singh was the rarest of rare token of honour bestowed to an Indian lawyer. The Lawyers Association of Islamabad giving standing ovation to an Indian lawyer was another unbelievable gesture. Friendly encounter with the senior media persons in the Press Clubs of Lahore and Islamabad are the memorable events which laid the foundation to launch a joint movement for the defense of Indian and Pakistani prisoners languishing in the jails of the respective countries for years. It was unbelievable that the agencies in Pakistan refused permission to the Indian lawyer to visit Islamabad in spite of having a valid visa and that the Indian team was called back from Wagah border at the intervention of several leaders of Pakistan and AJK (POK). The entire 10 days' stay in Pakistan and visit from Lahore to Islamabad is being inked as unbelievable and rightly so.

In this book the author has developed the concept of the Indian mindset required for India to modernize as an innovative global economy cum military power that matches the requirements of playing a role on the global scene. For this purpose, he advocates a new ideology of the modern right which is based on the concept of a national identity rooted in Hindutva; and which identity defining characteristic is culled from a clear perception of the correct history of India. He says that such an ideology of India's modern right is based on India's constitutional framework, modern Hindutva, and ancient Hindu values for governance principles.

"e;By putting survival in a preeminent position, Darwin relegates high aspirations and elevated sentiments to the periphery, barely part of the landscape, while the utilitarian aspects of life are brought to the fore. This vision has had wide repercussions in an age where there is an unfortunate tendency to incline towards materialist and utilitarian philosophies. These have diffused a primordial and decisive feature in man: his spiritual evolution."e; "e;In this work I have summarized the theories that I consider the most relevant and deserving of analysis and commentary on this subject both from the East and the West. I have no doubt that the reader's spirit will soar following the elevated flight of these thinkers."e; "e;In the final analysis this is the purpose of all my work: raising the spirit, lifting it out of the daily tedium and the noxious and low goals that contemporary society has to offer, presenting other realities beyond oneself that are more realistic, attractive and worthy of being lived when they are shown in the correct light. This work demonstrates other ways of seeing, nuances that open multiple windows for the human spirit into distant, bright and promising horizons."e;

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations organized an international seminar on Tagore in October 2011 in New Delhi to coincide with the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) to primarily focus on 'Tagore's Vision of the Contemporary World' 'where knowledge is free' and 'where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way in the dreary desert sand of dead habit' and also to discover, as says Tagore, the most profound unity, the spiritual unity between the races. The primary objective of the conference on Tagore was to bring Tagore into worldwide focus, who was not only seeking unity on a higher level between the Infinite and the finite but also seeking answers to many ticklish issues both social and political and at the same time spiritual and philosophical and dreaming at the same time as how to achieve Human Unity and bring peace. The seminar corroborated that today Asian and European cultural and civilizational traditions are seeking a sort of completion in one another not through a philosophical discourse or mutual cross-questioning but by creating a common space within which the voice of the one evokes a responsive echo in the other and the engaging issues of the contemporary world become a thing of concern for all of us of the East as well as the West.
