"Rejoice, O faithful realm of Rus'! Rejoice, O right-believing Prince Vladimir, most rich! Rejoice, O chosen Olga! For ye were our first mediators before the master of all, the initiators of Orthodoxy, and guides to the True Faith! Rejoice, every place and land and city nurtured by the citizens of the kingdom of heaven! These saints have been shown to be beacons for our souls! With the radiance of miracles, and by deeds and signs, they have shone forth mystically upon all the ends of the earth. And they now entreat Christ for the salvation of our souls." - Doxasticon to All the Saints of Rus'
Royal princes and fools for Christ. Holy hierarchs and secluded hermits. Missionaries and martyrs. The choir of saints of Holy Rus’ represents the fruit of the Holy Spirit brought forth over a millennium of Christian life, even before the 10th century conversion of the Great-Prince Vladimir of Kiev. This inheritance has enriched and edified not only the saints’ own kinsmen, but the whole world through the zealous missionary efforts of the Russian Church in Siberia, North America, Japan, and beyond.
This daily synaxarion organizes the lives of a multitude of Russian saints by their days of commemoration according to the Church calendar, with those commemorated from July to December in this second volume. Also included is an alphabetized index of saints, maps of Rus' and medieval Russia, and an historical timeline.
This two-volume work was compiled to strengthen the Orthodox faithful, whether in exile or suffering under Communist persecution. We now offer this English translation for the first time as a furtherance of that mission to inspire and exhort all the faithful of the Orthodox Church to preserve the memory of these spiritual beacons.

"Prayer is a refuge of God’s great mercy to the human race." The refuge is a place of inner stillness and peace where the heart is fully opened to the embrace of God’s love. It is a return to the ancient paradise from which the human race, in Adam, had to depart because of disobedience to the command of God. "The Refuge" is an exposition of the concrete actions we should take if we truly desire to live with and in God. It weaves together meditations on scripture (from the Psalms in particular) and amplifies these with the wisdom of early Christian saints, in particular the ascetical writings of St John of the Ladder, St Macarius the Great and St Isaac the Syrian. It is an active exhortation for us to reacquire the original nobility with which God fashioned us.

The work of Archbishop Averky (Taushev) stands apart in an intellectual climate that prizes innovation over tradition, headlines over the Truth, and intellectualism over divine revelation. Writing in the tradition of biblical exegetes such as St John Chrysostom and Blessed Theophylact of Bulgaria, Archbishop Averky provides a commentary that is firmly grounded in the teaching of the Church, manifested in its liturgical hymnography and the works of the Holy Fathers. Analyzing all four Gospels chronologically and simultaneously, he allows the reader to see the life of Christ as an unfolding narrative in accessible, direct language. Using the best of pre-Revolutionary Russian sources, Archbishop Averky also remained abreast of developments in Western biblical scholarship, engaging with it directly and honestly. He was adamant, however, about the primary importance of Patristic exegesis in understanding the Scriptures. He approaches the Gospels first and foremost not as a literary work of antiquity, but as the revelation of Jesus Christ as God in the flesh.Archbishop Averky’s commentaries on the New Testament have become standard textbooks in Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary and have been published in Russia to widespread acclaim. They will be an indispensable addition to the library of every student of the Gospels.
