Highly illustrated, the book celebrates renovation of textile mills in the North of England. Case studies from interviews with those responsible for these iconic buildings give insights into how other mills may be reused.WINNER: 2026 Peter Neaverson Award for outstanding scholarship in the field of industrial archaeology (Association for Industrial Archaeology)Textile mills producing woollen, cotton and silk fabric were the backbone of the industrial revolution, and as much part of our national heritage as churches and country houses. They were responsible for placemaking in the towns and cities of Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire, and are still a familiar and prominent part of the landscape of many towns. There are over 650 mills in these counties which are empty or underused, and under threat. But there are many examples of mills being renovated and repurposed for a variety of uses by inspiring people and organisations. With case studies drawn from extensive interviews with owners, developers and users of these buildings, the book celebrates the repurposing of industrial mill buildings in the North of England. It tells the human story behind many renovations, drawing together common themes, and insights as to what determines successful renovation, and how further schemes can be developed.

Tells the story of the 300 Anglican churches in Europe which were built, mainly in Victorian times, to serve British communities of expatriates and visitors, who came for health and leisure pursuits. Richly illustrated with over 500 historical and recent images.Anglican worship on mainland Europe dates from the Reformation, from Calais (English until 1558) to trading centres such as Antwerp and Smyrna, and later possessions including Gibraltar and Malta. After 1815, peace and railways encouraged British travel and settlement, carrying the Church of England to places shaped by trade, health and leisure. Some congregations were seasonal, meeting in hotels or shared spaces, while others built churches funded by subscriptions or local benefactors. Local and British architects, including G. E. Street and A. W. Blomfield, designed buildings ranging from locally influenced to distinctly "English". From the Alps and the Riviera to Baku and Archangel, churches served diverse expatriate communities amid debates over liturgy and architectural style. By 1914 nearly 300 English churches existed in Europe, many still in use today. In this lively account, James Bettley traces their development-especially the Victorian boom-illustrated with over 500 images and supported by a comprehensive gazetteer.

How the Anglican church responded to population growth and the need for more accommodation, with the building of 1500 new churches, many of the finest quality. This book is the first comprehensive study of late-Georgian church-building. After centuries of post-Reformation inactivity, the Church of England began to address the desperate shortage of accommodation and build on a huge scale. Almost all the leading architects were involved and, amongst approximately 1500 new churches there are some outstanding designs; buildings of the very highest order architecturally. In this pioneering study, the churches are considered free from the Ecclesiological zeal that condemned them and has, for so long, prevented their serious study. It will celebrate the best of them and provide valuable insights into the design and planning of the whole corpus. There will be many revelations.Included is a thorough examination of the stylistic alternatives and contemporary liturgical imperatives, along with their architectural implications. And the book explores a lost world of late-Georgian churchgoing: what people expected and experienced in a church service. Also considered are some of the period's remarkable material and constructional innovations, ones often exploited in church-building, along with the provision of architectural services in the era that preceded full professionalisation.

Celebration of the classical architectural tradition, spanning 2500 years but widely practised today. Professionals, students and enthusiasts will benefit from the profuse illustrations, including detailed line drawings, demonstrating this rich tradition and its prevailing themes and motifs.Classical architecture continues to be widely practised today, and this book describes and demonstrates the fundamental principles from its origins in Antiquity and continuous development during the Renaissance, the Baroque and Rococo phases, Neo-Classicism, and survival in various forms into the current century. Heavily illustrated with colour and black and white photography, a particular strength of the book is the many detailed and annotated line drawings for which the author is well-known and a glossary which serves as a dictionary of Classical architecture in itself. The author celebrates the richness of Classical architectural vocabulary, grammar and language, and demonstrates the huge range of themes and motifs found in the subject. The book provides a basis for understanding this rich source of architectural design which has been at the core of Western culture for over 2500 years and continues to be widely studied and practised worldwide. For practicing architects, planners and students, this is the benchmark book for understanding the Classical tradition in architecture and landscape.

Victorian churches were often of high quality, reflecting in physical terms the intense theological debates of the time. This highly-illustrated book by a leading authority describes many of the finest examples. Many churches were built in England during the reign of Queen Victoria: most were in various varieties of Gothic Revival. Often exquisitely furnished, they were visible expressions of the presence and importance of religion at the time. Their architectural qualities reflected aspirations of clergy, laity, and individual benefactors. The finest were the results of passionate commitment to an architecture soundly based on scholarly studies known as Ecclesiology. James Stevens Curl places English churches of the period in their complex social and denominational settings, giving comprehensive accounts of the religious atmosphere and controversies of the times. He charts the progress and development of the Gothic Revival, explains differences in the architecture of various denominations, outlines the influences of the chief protagonists involved, and describes the demands made on craftsmen and industry to produce the materials, furnishings, and fittings necessary in making some of the finest buildings ever created in England. He reveals something of the individuals and events that shaped the religious climate of the epoch, while specially commissioned illustrations reveal the rich variety found in Victorian churches.

This book considers what prints tell us about the development of the landscape garden in 18th- and early 19th- century Britain. They formed a significant part of the expanding machinery of mass communication and could thus influence taste and spread ideas. This could lead to propaganda, or at least creation of an image the owner of a property found desirable, and reality was consequently often compromised. The illusion of actuality could be achieved by adjustments and techniques employed by artists generally. Even if not entirely representational, a print may reveal much about fashions and attitudes towards the landscape garden. At their best they powerfully convey the atmosphere of a garden as well as the perception and possible idealisation of it.The book breaks new ground, including discussion of techniques of producing a print, marketing, categories of print, and studies of the greatest engravers and a few select gardens that prints illuminate particularly well. Changes can be observed both in the developments in print-making and in the journey of the landscape garden. With 220 prints of the period to illustrate the text, all aspects of the subject are brought to the reader's attention.
