Joseph Chaphadzika Chakanza was born in 1943 at Mchacha Village, T.A. Malemia in Nsanje District where he grew up and discovered his vocation as a Catholic priest, being ordained in 1969. After studies for a Master''s degree at the University of Aberdeen, he returned to Malawi and was appointed Lecturer in Religious Studies at Chancellor College, University of Malawi, in 1977. During the 1980s he took study leave to complete his DPhil in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford. Thereafter he remained at Chancellor College until his retirement in 2007, serving for many years as the inspirational Head of the Department of Religious Studies. After retirement he embarked on a further period of teaching at the Catholic University of Malawi. His stature in the Catholic Church was recognised when he was made a Monsignor in June 2019. He died in his home diocese of Chikwawa in April 2020.

In 1859 the British "imported" 445 German settler families to strengthen the colonial borders in British Kaffraria (now Eastern Cape) in South Africa. Three of these settler families were Baptists, they evangelized their fellow Germans and anyone else they met. In 1867 Johann Gerhard Oncken of Hamburg, the founder of the Baptist Churches in Continental Europe, sent Hugo Gutsche to take care of the new Baptist community there and evangelize the native population. The author of this book, Fritz Haus, the last of Gutsche''s German successors, wrote his PhD on the life and work of Hugo Gutsche, graduating from the University of Stellenbosch at the age of 80. Haus describes his ministry to White and Black over half a century and he does not forget Mrs Mary Gutsche, whom her husband called his "co-pastor."

Stephen Kauta Msiska was ordained to the ministry in 1945 and served the Livingstonia Synod in a number of lakeshore parishes before being appointed first a tutor and later Principal of the united CCAP Theological College at Nkhoma where he taught from 1962 to 1974. His firm stand for what he understood to be the principles of the Christian Gospel led to a clash with the one-party regime and he was forced to flee to his home village and to live there in relative obscurity. This book makes accessible some of the fruits not only of his years of active pastoral ministry and theological teaching but also of his time of lonely suffering and sorrow. Distinctive in the writing of this pioneering theologian is a profound, though not uncritical, sympathy with the traditional religion of his people combined with a passionate concern for authentic Christian discipleship. Careful readers of this original and thoughtful book will find the "golden buttons" which Stephen Kauta is determined should not be lost.

In Christian history spiritual awakenings are a recurring and important phenomenon. The Blantyre Spiritual Awakening was characterized by an overt evangelistic fervour among bands of people that belonged to an ever growing Born Again Movement in the city, from 1974 into the 1980s. This history covers The Blantyre Awakening which revived Evangelical Christianity in Malawi and prepared the way for the emerging Charismatic Movement.

When a thousand leading members of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained under the emergency regulations imposed by the Federation government in 1959, the Presbyterian chaplains who ministered to them at Kanchedza Camp in Limbe were the late Rev Jonathan Sangaya and Rev Andrew C. Ross. They soon discovered that around 700 of the thousand men were members of the Church of Central African Presbyterian. This raised a question in the mind of the recently arrived Scottish missionary: how may we account historically for the fact that so many national leaders were Presbyterians? The quest to answer that question led him to produce the thorough examination of the foundation and early history of the Blantyre Mission of the Church of Scotland which is found in this book. Written in the mid-1960s, it remains today an indispensable work of reference for understanding the history of both church and nation in Malawi.

Jesus - the Man for others" is a contemporary expression of the Gospel message, with many references about how it was appropriated over the centuries, and as illustrated in art. The author, a Catholic priest who holds a doctorate from the University of Wales, taught for some years in African seminaries and has published several books including Malawi Mailings and Issues of War.

Whereas Victorian optimists imagined that armed conflict would gradually disappear as the world continued to head for universal peace and prosperity, the 20th century wiped out any such illusions. These reflections mark the centenary of WW1, whose true horrors gradually unfolded despite official attempts at censorship. "The pity of war" is first examined through the eyes of artists and poets, before turning to an overview of how thinking about the conduct and morality of war developed down the centuries. Are there still lessons to be learnt? - read on in the final chapter.

The vote in favour of multi-party politics at the National Referendum of 1993, and the subsequent General Election of 1994, heralded the advent of a democratic system of government in Malawi. lt soon became apparent, however, that there remained many obstacles to overcome before Malawi would be a truly democratic country. In this volume, a multi-disciplinary approach has been employed to examine both the progress and the pitfalls of the democratization process. Political scientists, lawyers, historians, theologians, literary critics, linguists, economists, and educationalists apply the tools of their respective disciplines to take stock of democratization in Malawi. This book is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking to understand the social and political situation in Malawi in the early years of the Second Republic.

Between 1992 and 1994 Malawi underwent a remarkable transition from dictatorship to democracy. Truly a transformation of power! Yet this period of profound change raised many issues of power and accountability. In this book some of the key questions are explained and addressed from a theological perspective. The work originated as a case study on the World Council of Churches ,Theology of Life, programme. It was then presented as a Kachere Monograph in the belief that it will not only contribute to the reconstruction of politic in Malawi but also be an important resource for all those concerned with the formation of a viable theology of power for today,s world. It is now presented here again as a Luviri Reprint. The contributors are all drawn from the University of Malawi Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Kenneth Ross has written on ,The Transformation of Power in Malawi 1992-94: the Role of the Christian Churches, and ,A Practical Theology of Power for the New Malawi,; Felix Chingota on ,The Use of the Bible in Social Transformation,; Isabel Apawo Phiri on ,Marching, Suspended and Stoned: Christian Women in Malawi 1995,; James Tengatenga on ,Young People: Participation or Alienation? The Bird Boy's Song is a retelling of the common Malawian folk story. "e;The Orphan and the Slave"e;. The story recounts a slave's usurpation of his master's place, which he enjoys for a short time, until he is unmasked. The author used modern storytelling techniques to dramatise this popular trickster tale.

This collection of verse contains poems from Malawi's foremost writer, most of which were written in the 1970s. Poet, fiction writer, playwright, and children's author Steve Bernard Miles Chimombo was born in Zomba, Malawi, and educated at the University of Malawi, the University of Wales, the University of Leeds, and Columbia University. Mythology and oral culture inform his poetry, and he frequently used both modernist techniques and wry humor to address political themes.

This book offers the reader a portrait - a representation no less - of the social life and culture of the peasant-smallholders of the Shire Highlands, situated in Southern Malawi. It explores the relationship between the people of the Shire Highlands and the natural landscape - in all its diversity and dynamic complexity. It is an ethnographic study focussing specifically on the peasant-smallholders of the Highlands, who constitute around 80 per cent of the current population and their complex, multi-faceted relationship to the land and its diverse biota.

Malawi''s first two Presbyterian ministers, Harry Kambwiri Matecheta and Stephen Kundecha, were ordained in March 1911. Ecclesiastically, this made them fully equal with their European fellow-ministers. There were, however, subtle and not-so-subtle racial codes that reminded them that they were expected to occupy a subordinate position. This Occasional Paper explores how they discovered their identity and vocation in a challenging context.

Ever since the modern state of Malawi came into existence more than a hundred years ago, religion has played its role in the history of the country, and has interacted with politics and society in many ways, such as with the early Blantyre Mission, the Chilembwe Rising, and the struggle against the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyassaland. This book presents two preachers, Elliot Kamwana and Wilfred Gudu, who, in their different ways and at different times, challenged British colonial power which ruled over Malawi at that time.

The Caves of Nazimbuli is a retelling of a popular folkstory about two sisters who went in search of children hidden in magic pots by the spirits. Under the guidance the friendly creatures, one sister, who was polite, chooses a beautiful child for herself. The other, who was rude to the creatures, gets an ugly child as punishment. Both sisters return home to look after their new children. This book is the second in the series of popular folkstories retold by the author for the modern reader. The others are Operation Kalulu, Child of Clay, and The Bird Boy's Song.

Béléko is a small village in the West African state of Mali. In the book’s twenty-five chapters we meet Dutch development workers, French missionaries and Malian public service workers, health workers, farmers, village women and their children. All of these characters strive in their different ways to give meaning to their lives as their paths cross in the daily village life of Africa at the end of the 1980s. As each character tells his or her own story, we learn of their backgrounds, their passions and their struggles – and how they influence each other in decisive ways.

This study focusses on the traditional belief of the district of Mzimba, which is situated in the northern part of Malawi. Women who reach menopause who believe in mbulu refuse to have sex with their husbands, They believe that un-used sperms come out during menstruation, but since the period is past, these sperms will remain in the womb and grow into living creatures causing the woman to swell the stomach and then later die. The author, a Reverend and MA student at Mzuzu University, details the belief and its effect on society in Mzimba.

More than twenty years have passed since this book was first published yet its themes remain vital for understanding the way in which Christian faith is coming to expression in a context like Malawi. It begins with Christology, with the question of the identity of Jesus Christ that is perennially at the centre of the Christian theological task. For a century and more Malawians have been hearing the proclamation, ,here comes your king!"e; This has struck a chord in millions of hearts as individuals, families and communities have named Jesus Christ as Lord. It has also posed the challenge of discovering what this Lordship means in every dimension of life. Much of the rest of the book pursues this question as it explores how church identity has been formed and consolidated, how the faith has been a resource for the nation at critical moments, and the ways in which the faith has shaped national identity and helped to meet political challenges.

"e;Kusadziwa Nkufa Komwe"e;(Lack of Knowledge is as Being Dead) is a Nyanja maxim, African Philosophy that is true the world over. A person who lacks knowledge is as good as dead, inactive and insensitive. A dead person does not contribute to good life. Lack of knowledge leads to destruction, but having knowledge leads to informed decisions and freedom. Setting the Record Straight is about correction wrong understanding and replacing it with liberating knowledge, to the benefit of both church and society.

Much good academic work has been done on the mainline churches in many African countries. But less so on the "e;smaller"e; missions and the churches that they founded. This book describes the history of one of the "e;smaller"e; churches the Zambia Baptist Association with its roots in Malawi (1905) and its missionary connections to England, South Africa, Sweden, Australia and finally to the Liebenzell Mission in Germany. It is thus one of the many contributions needed for the writing of a history of the Evangelical churches of Africa.
