"Joan Aiken's invention seemed inexhaustible ... her sheer storytelling zest a phenomenon. She was a literary treasure."- Philip Pullman, author of His Dark MaterialsLamb House in Rye is said to have been haunted for centuries. This ghost story was inspired by two of its famous literary tenants - Henry James and E.F. Benson, using the imagined diary of an earlier Mayor of Rye, Toby Lamb, whose father built the handsome Georgian house."Lamb House is in Rye, an ancient town of East Sussex, England. It is very much a real place, even a famous one, yet The Haunting of Lamb House is as elusive to review as it must have been to write. It is safe to say that no one but Joan Aiken could have written it, not only because she was born in Rye and has the town in her bones as it were, but also because she has the power - shown in her other books - of evoking strange, often eerie events of the past and making other times, places and people vividly alive. This book goes further: She has taken the real history of Lamb House and interwoven happenings that are purely imaginary, working so skillfully that even those who have lived there can hardly tell which is which!"So wrote novelist Rumer Godden, who also lived in Lamb House. She went on:"For those who do not sense such things, The Haunting of Lamb House is a most skillful and intriguing interweaving of fact and fiction; to those who do, it is a memorable evocation. In either case it is a little masterpiece."

Susan Ertz was a popular novelist of the interwar years, best known for her novel Madame Claire, which was chosen as one of the first ten Penguin Books paperbacks in 1935; she also wrote In the Cool of the Day - later adapted into a film of the same name in 1963 - starring Jane Fonda and Angela Lansbury. However, one of her earlier titles - Woman Alive - is an important work in the canon of speculative fiction, until now largely forgotten among the works of her contemporaries such as George Orwell, H.G. Wells and Aldous Huxley.Woman Alive is set in 1985 and is at once a satire and a commentary on the rising threat of nationalism in 1930s Britain. The novel is cinematic in structure, conjuring a world in which feminisim and pacifism are woven together to tell the story of Stella - an accidental survivor who became queen of England and the hope of humankind. The relevance of this novel to 21st-century society is of course heightened post-Covid-19. But at its heart it is a love story, a romance of sorts and a page-turner extraordinaire.

"Bernard Ashley's great gift is to turn what seems to be low-key realism into something much stronger and more resonant. It has something to do with empathy, compassion, an undimmed thirst for decency and justice."- Philip Pullman, author of His Dark MaterialsBreak in the Sun tells the story of Patsy, a young girl who runs away to Margate from Deptford, fleeing her abusive stepfather. It is a remarkably sensitive portrayal of growing up in tough circumstances, with the heroine portrayed not as a victim but as a survivor. First published in 1980, this book was instantly praised for its realistic portrayal of working-class children, and the following year it was serialised for the BBC as a gritty and rather controversial children's drama. The book and its adaptation are now regarded as standout pieces of children’s drama from the 1980s (director Roger Singleton-Turner would later work on the kids' TV series Grange Hill).

Storm Jameson (1891-1986) was born and grew up in the Yorkshire port of Whitby and became one of the most formidable and prolific British novelists of the twentieth century. A committed socialist and President of English PEN, Jameson helped rescue hundreds of writers fleeing fascism during the Second World War, while producing an extraordinary body of fiction and journalism.Once widely read and admired by contemporaries including Vera Brittain and E.M. Forster, her work has slipped from view, though its sharp wit and moral urgency is strikingly contemporary. The Moon is Making was inspired by, and set in, the town of Whitby. Told through the lens of the Wikker family, Jameson's searingly brilliant portrait of a fractured coastal community explores class division and emotional alienation in this rediscovered Northern novel from the 1930s.This brand new edition of a forgotten classic is introduced by Maxine Peake and illustrated by fellow Northerner, Alice Patullo."The Moon Is Making is superior in technical skill and dramatic power. Miss Jameson is a writer worth watching."The New York Times, 1938
