This second edition includes an epilogue citing the steady and committed efforts of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center to restore and conserve the inside and outside of Mary Nohl's house and the concrete works in her yard. Outsider artist, sophisticated naïf, and witch are all labels that have described Mary Nohl (1914-2001), creator of a magical and mysterious site on the shore of Lake Michigan near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here she constructed huge concrete heads, stone-encrusted creatures, and imposing driftwood figures to fill the yard surrounding a modest cottage where she spent most of her life. Carved heads hang from the eaves, wind chimes tinkle in the trees, and pebbles at her doorstep spell 'Boo.' The cottage is painted and embellished inside and out with wooden fish, boats, animals, and leaping figures. Wire, hemp, chicken bones, egg shells, aluminum pans, broken glass-almost any castoff materials available-were used by Nohl to create her art and ornament her surroundings.Mary Nohl: Inside & Outside offers the first comprehensive look into the unusual life of a remarkable artist whose surroundings stand as a monument to her creative personality. Establishing Nohl as a notable 'outsider' artist, Barbara Manger and Janine Smith offer an inside look at an artist whose idiosyncratic art-pieces whose allure is only heightened by the intrigue and legends surrounding their creator-attracted generations of visitors who peered through the fence at Nohl's wildly decorated yard but rarely caught a glimpse of the elusive artist.

The art of Dusti Bongé was influenced by her experiences in three distinctive American cities: Biloxi, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; and New York, New York. In developing her artistic practice in these vibrant urban settings, she portrayed a unique "sense of place" in her work. In Dusti Bongé, Art and Life, which includes over five hundred color images, J. Richard Gruber documents Dusti Bongé's full career and her key role in the twentieth-century art world and in a highly creative family, including her husband, Archie (1901‒1936), her son, photographer Lyle Bongé (1929–2009), and her grandson, photographer Paul Bongé (b. 1963). Born in Biloxi in 1903, she died there in 1993, living on the family property where she was raised. After graduating from Blue Mountain College in 1922, she moved to Chicago and became an actress, then moved to New York to act on stage and in silent movies. She married artist Archie Bongé in 1928 and lived in New York until they moved to Biloxi in 1934 with their child, Lyle. Following Archie's premature death in 1936, she dedicated herself to working as an artist. Initially, she exhibited in New Orleans and Biloxi, then in New York, where she became affiliated with the famed Betty Parsons Gallery in 1946. There she was given a series of one-person exhibitions in the years from 1956 to 1975. Her art achieved national recognition through her shows at the Parsons Gallery, when New York replaced Paris as an international art center, and Abstract Expressionism became a leading influence in the art world. Dusti Bongé, Art and Life explores the full range of her creativity, extending from her stage acting to her activities in painting, sculpting, printmaking, sewing, writing, and poetry.

Elene Usdin first came to Detroit in 2014, for a show at the Museum of New Art (MONA). Since then, she has been compelled to return, taking portraits and meeting new people with each visit. In 2019, she was the inaugural artist-in-residence at Art in Woodbridge, with the mission to take a collective portrait of the arty and eclectic neighbourhood, positioned just adjacent to Wayne State University and the Midtown/Cass Corridor area. Some of the residents are transitional-students, artists, faculty - and others have been in Woodbridge for generations, making it one of Detroit's most diverse and eye-catching neighbourhoods, rich with public art and living history.Usdin's portraits reflect her ability to connect deeply with her subjects; each seems to capture a resident or environment within Woodbridge completely on their own terms. The artist shoots both analog film and digital; and for the second wave of wintertime photos, she worked with a special camera lent to her by Fuji Film.Usdin is an internationally-recognized working photographer, as well as an accomplished illustrator, and supplements her photographs with hand-drawn maps and notes on her Woodbridge experience. The book comes together as a unified and gorgeous look at a thriving Detroit neighbourhood, through the eyes of a foreign artist who already seems very much at home.

Distributed by University Press of Florida on behalf of Chadwick & Son Orchids, Inc. In 1818, William Cattley succeeded in flowering one of the first species of the genus that would bear his name. These first cattleyas are the classic cattleyas, whose form defined the essence of tropical orchids for generations to come. Indeed, the color of their flowers became known as "orchid." In this helpful and informative book, each classic Cattleya species is described in fascinating detail, and its role in breeding programs is elucidated. All that is required to appreciate and grow the large-flowered cattleyas successfully is included. Cultivation, humidity and watering, fertilizing, propagation, and diagnosing and treating problems are detailed, making this volume valuable for both veteran orchid enthusiasts and those who simply love these beautiful flowers.

Jerrie Marcus Smith remembers her great aunt Carrie as a humorless woman who always wore black and who, Jerrie says, “scared me to death.” Only as an adult did Jerrie grasp the impact of Carrie Marcus Neiman. Along with her brother, Herbert Marcus Sr., and her husband A.L. Neiman, Carrie co-founded in 1907 the famed Neiman Marcus department store in Dallas, Texas.Carrie played an integral role in the store’s success, despite having three strikes against her: she was a woman, she was Jewish, and (after her husband’s illicit relationship with a second-floor saleswoman) she was divorced. Yet with impeccable taste and exemplary manners, she traveled as a buyer to New York in the 1920s (without a man!) and, as Jerrie says, “was nobody’s pushover.”Carrie was self-taught and never attended college. Her only pregnancy ended in miscarriage; she worked at Neiman Marcus until her death at age 66. Yet through memories shared by her father, the late Neiman Marcus legend Stanley Marcus, as well as through spellbinding interviews with long retired salespeople, Jerrie has felt inextricably tied to Carrie. Each recollection of Aunt Carrie, each remembrance, each detail melted away Jerrie’s childhood fear of the stern woman in black, leaving in its place a colorful portrait of a person to be admired, to be loved and—perhaps most of all—to be shared.

Established in 1999 as a partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle, LLC, has been responsible for delivering the Department of Energy's research mission during a period of historic change at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Shaped by the unique cultures of both the University and Battelle, the changes have literally transformed the face of the Laboratory from an outdated institution characterized by shabby facilities and giant parking lots into one of the world's most modern and successful research campuses. The story of UT-Battelle is how an unprecedented partnership between the Department of Energy and the state of Tennessee produced benefits for a national laboratory and a land grant university that exceeded all expectations. Told in narrative form, the story begins with the critical decision by the University of Tennessee to seek a management role at the Laboratory, the bold proposal to the Department of Energy, and an inside look into how UT-Battelle sought to expand the Laboratory's research program by “breaking the mold” and bringing about fundamental changes in how the Laboratory is operated. In particular, the book examines the strategy of campus modernization that in less than five years used an innovative partnership with the University and Battelle to transform the face of the Laboratory and play a part in successful competitions for major new research programs.Using historical images, the book captures many of the people and events that produced a period of truly remarkable progress at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Historic Sites in Virginia's Northern Neck and Essex County is an indispensible guide for those who have an active or potential interest in the rich history of the Northern Neck region of Virginia and its historic sites. This six-county Tidewater region includes the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee. The guide includes a brief history of the region beginning with the exploratory voyages of Captain John Smith up the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers in 1608, and his encounters with various local Native American tribes. The 460 historic sites described here range from grand plantations such as Stratford Hall, to the modest early homes of middling planters, to early churches, schools, and courthouses. Most of these sites still exist, but some "lost" sites are also included because of their historical significance, and as reminders of the continuing need for active preservation efforts. The book contains 445 photos together with 36 maps showing the location of these historic sites. The general cutoff date for inclusion was the Civil War, but the guide contains descriptions of some later sites as well, including many early African American schools and churches, and important sites involving the steamboat and fishing industries.Distributed for Preservation Virginia, Northern Neck Branch

Virginia encompasses "this nation’s longest continuous experience of Afro-American life and culture," esteemed scholar Armstead L. Robinson has written. This book offers both highway and armchair travelers the first published guide to the locations and texts of more than three hundred state historical highway markers recalling significant people, places, and events in Virginia’s African American history. Published to coincide with the 2019 commemoration of the first documented arrival of Africans to present-day Virginia in 1619, A Guidebook to Virginia’s African American Historical Markers showcases topics of state and national significance, spanning the colonial era through the mid-1960s and the civil rights movement. Nearly all of these markers were approved by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources within the past forty years, through early 2019, thereby enlarging the sweep and scope of the nation’s oldest statewide historical highway marker program.

A Perfectly Ordinary Paradise: An intimate view of life on Brawley Creek, is about the extraordinary lives of ordinary creatures. Centered around the natural life along a small section of land in Missouri, on a tiny tributary that eventually drains into the Missouri River, it explores is a synthesis of science and aesthetics—reason and emotion—and the power of that combination to reintroduce us to a world from which we have become estranged. Intended as a bookend for his earlier work, The Galápagos: Exploring Darwin's Tapestry, John Hess uses his intimate photography of Brawley Creek to illustrate that life in everyone’s back yard is complex and beautiful. Written to be enjoyed at many levels, Hess's lush photographs introduce the reader to the beautiful colors and elegant architectures of the residents of Brawley Creek.
