Along the Trail in Algonquin Park has delighted thousands of readers across Canada and the United States from the time of its first publication in the summer of 1980. This is the fourth reprint of the classic work by the late legendary outdoorsman, Ralph Bice of Kearney, Ontario. The writing is vintage Ralph Bice; a combination of unequalled park knowledge, remarkable outdoor adventures and delightful rustic humour.Along the Trail was originally to have been titled "Forty Years in Algonquin Park," but by the time the book appeared, the author’s lifelong love affair with the park had exceeded eighty. In 1993, the time of Algonquin Park’s centennial, the "Grand Old Man of Algonquin" had entered his 94th year. He was to continue to live nearby his beloved park until his passing in 1997. Remembered not only for his writings, Ralph Bice is honoured by a fitting memorial to "Mister Algonquin" as Algonquin Park visitors will now discover when they enter the west side of the park. For here the lake he favoured over all others, Butt Lake, has been renamed Ralph Bice Lake.

Walter Stansell of Straffordville, Dan Sarazin of Golden Lake, and Henry Taylor of Bancroft did what they had to do to preserve some of Canada’s rural history. Stansell preserved the age of steam by building working models of machines used during the past century. Master canoe make Dan Sarazin (Chief White Eagle) has given many hours of his time to the preservation of old Native skills. Taylor still builds hand hewn log cabins, splits his own shingles with pioneer tools and carves reminders of early days in the bush. These three extraordinary men have done more than salvage some of Canada’s past. Each in his own way actually made history at the Grass Roots level.Through extensive research involving oral history and the uncovering of a wide range of materials, i.e. vintage photographs, diaries, maps and sketchbooks, Barry Lloyd Penhale, journalist and broadcaster, has assembled an outstanding archival collection of Canadiana. In recalling colourful and courageous characters and communities of bygone eras, the publishers hope to partly fill the vacuum so long apparent in the preservation of our distinctive heritage.

"I remember them as though they had happened yesterday."So writes author-naturalist Charles Sauriol in reference to his many memorable experiences within Toronto’s Don River Valley. From Scout outings in 1920 to pioneer cottaging, train excursions, maple syrup making, beekeeping and countless other activities, the author’s long association with the Don makes for fascinating reading in this sequel to his earlier book, Remembering the Don.Tales of the Don provides for Toronto residents and visitors alike a picture window through which they may see the valley as it was years ago. A vital part of a great city’s heritage has been preserved thanks to Charles Sauriol’s foresight, tenacity and unshakeable love of subject. Once again "The King of the Don Valley," in his quaint and refreshing way, has written a book that will delight his sizeable following and undoubtedly gain for him many new readers.

"Beneath the deadly dull history of Ontario lies a myriad of fascinating, but little-known stories. Did you know: Sir John A. Macdonald was born in an Ontario town, not in Scotland?Karl Marx was once a visitor to Toronto? The famous poet W.B. Yeats graced the town of Captainstone, Ontario, with a visit in 1933?There was an active volcano in Ontario in 1886?"The book is accompanied by an important caveat: All of these stories are fictitious."’The book is rather hard to characterize,’ said MacGillivary, a professor at the University of Waterloo. ’It doesn’t fit into any particular genre. It is best described as a "myth imitation." What I am doing here is inventing myths about the history of Ontario, where the facts are almost entirely false but the emotions are real.’"The book, a humorous romp through the history of Ontario, distills the character of Ontario out of the approximately 120 short vignettes taken, supposedly, from local histories and reminiscences, all of which are fictitious."- Anne Marie Goetz, Whig-Standard Staff Writer

"Writing with uncanny skill, Louise de Kiriline Lawrence leads us gently into the world of birds. Her perception, intuition and experience give her insights that she here freely shares with us all. "I knew this remarkable lady for years, and had previously read her Mar, but on re-reading it, I was struck with the sensitive, magical way she reveals the behaviour of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. "At her doorstep, at almost everyone's doorstep, there is a wondrous, beautiful world, if we will only be patient and observant. In Mar, Mrs. Lawrence shows us the way. "Naturalists, birders, aspiring ornithologists, scientists, all should take time to read Mar." - Robert W. Nero, Author of The Great Gray Owl and Redwings "Mar is a glimpse into the natural life of a woodpecker -- a yellow-bellied sapsucker -- in two nesting seasons, as it interacts with its mate and other forest creatures. "The narrative, deceptively simple, consolidates a lifetime of careful observation and imaginative research. It should appeal to all birdwatchers, novice or expert." - Maureen Johnson, The Ottawa Citizen

Fifty-Two Sundays: From the Pulpit of the Padre is a response to the many requests for copies of David Rowland’s sermons and addresses. Selecting has not been an easy task. The intention is to highlight his philosophy, objectives and beliefs. His faith, conviction and commitment tie the component parts together.David Parsons Rowland was a compassionate, caring pastor. He was a man of conviction, deep faith and vision. He practised what he preached, believing that with God all things are possible. He was a man of action, full of enthusiasm and determination, and possessing that great sense of humour so frequently associated with the Irish. When he put his hand to the plough there was no turning back. Throughout his ministry he preached the Good News, in simple direct terms that afforded the listener a bearing in the struggle to answer questions of faith, daily living, family, relationships, and life as a whole.

Off the Beaten Path is a study of an exceptional outdoorsman, Walter Hesman. Each poem is carefully crafted to reveal the essence of one event and his appreciation of it."- From the introduction by Ardythe McMaster

Peter Jailall, teacher, storyteller and poet, expresses great passion for the English language and for the quality of life of all Canadians. With this, his first published volume of poetry, he takes a much-deserved place alongside Canada’s most significant writers of colour."Peter’s poems told me stories or rather pulled me into scenes where I became the actor seeing Toronto and her people in a way new to me. Peter’s empathy for people and his clear view of what deserves anger don’t contradict each other but sharpen the stories."- Joan Vinall Cox teaches reading at Sheridan College."Peter has shared his poems with me privately and I have been in audiences of teachers as he read his poems out loud. In both situations he strikes an emotional impact with his words and messages."- Larry Swartz, Educator.

The participation of the Iroquois of Akwasasne, Kanesetake (Oka), Kahnawake and Oswegatchie in the Seven Years’ War is a long neglected topic. The consequences of this struggle still shape Canadian history. The book looks at the social and economic impact of the war on both men and women in Canadian Iroquois communities. The Canadian Iroquois provides an enhanced appreciation both of the role of Amerindians in the war itself and of their difficult struggle to lead their lives within the unstable geopolitical environment created by European invasion and settlement.

A highly personal account of the travels of Max Finkelstein as he retraces, some two hundred years later, the route of Alexander Mackenzie, the first European to cross North America (1793). Mackenzie’s water trail is now commemorated as the Alexander Mackenzie Voyageur Route.More than just a travelogue of a canoe trip across Canada, this is an account that crosses more than two centuries. It is an exploration into the heart and mind of Alexander Mackenzie, the explorer, and Max Finkelstein, the "Voyageur-in-Training." Using Mackenzie’s journals and his own journal writings, the author creates a view of the land from two vantage points. The author retraced the route of Alexander Mackenzie across North America from Ottawa through to Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, and paddled the Blackwater, Fraser and Peace Rivers, completing the trip in 1999. This route is the most significant water trail in North America, and perhaps the world."A ’must-read’ for everyone who loves wild places and the magic of canoes."- Cliff Jacobson, Outdoor Writer & Consultant"Past and present collide in this journey of discovery across the map of Canada. Max craves the extremes. He relishes in coping with what nature throws at him, punishing himself to find his physical limits and experiencing firsthand the inherent dangers in such a voyage. With Alexander Mackenzie as his guide and inspiration, Max finds the strength to carry on against all odds to forge poignant historical and personal links in this incredible cross-Canada paddling odyssey."- Becky Mason, Artist and Paddler, Chelsea, Quebec

The republication of the memoirs of Colonel John McDonell of Scottas (1728-1810) will be welcomed by Highlanders the world over. Neither romantic novel nor learned history can conjure up for us so vividly as this unashamedly prejudiced eyewitness account of the atmosphere of the aftermath of "the ’45," the fierce loyalties and bitter hatreds, the high principles and barefaced villainy. We meet the ineffectual Stuart King, the saintly Duke of York, the unspeakable Captain Fergusson and many a minor character, each playing his part in the long drawn out British War of Succession and the death throes of Celtic society. The monograph traces John McDonell’s story from his adventurous journey from Scotland to Rome at the age of 12 to his emigration to North America thirty-three years later.

This is the story of the Highland Scots who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1773 aboard the brig Hector. These intrepid emigrants came for many reasons: the famine of the previous spring, pressures of population growth, intolerable rent increases, trouble with the law, the hunger of landless men to own land of their own. Upon arrival at Pictou, after an appalling storm-tossed crossing, they found they had been deceived. The promised prime farming land turned out to be virgin forest. Only the kindness of the Mi’kmaq and the few New Englanders already settled there enabled them to survive until they learned how to exploit the forests and clear land. But survive they did, and their prosperity encouraged shiploads of emigrants, many fellow clansmen, to join them, making northeastern Nova Scotia a true New Scotland.

"Peter’s poetry brings together the old world of his ancestors and heritage, and the new world to which he has emigrated. In each country he is comfortable in his body and in his language. Peter is realistically aware, and honours the yin and yang of both his ’homes.’"- Beryl Baigent, poet, freelance writer and teacher"Teachers have a gift for giving. As with all great teachers, Peter Jailall’s poetry gives its readers life’s lessons of tolerance and justice, sadness and laughter, pride and passion. Peter’s poetry has something important to say and to be learned. Its gift is that it is told with clarity and inventiveness."- Jim Giles, teacher, Peel Board of Education"There are but few poets capable of touching us socially, politically and economically. However, Peter Jailall is one of these limited few; his work compels us to take note of our daily lives as we communicate with each other."- Kofi Casisi, teacher, poet
